What's ACTUALLY working to grow on YouTube in 2022

This is a YouTube video titled "What's ACTUALLY working to grow on YouTube in 2022" created in August 2022. The content is a detailed monologue by a single speaker explaining effective YouTube growth strategies, focusing on the importance of homepage traffic over search-based traffic, audience retention, click-through rates, and end screen usage. The speaker also discusses a specific content ratio strategy for new channels and promotes a free challenge for deeper learning. There is no indication of multiple speakers or conversational interaction.
We are constantly being bombarded and reminded of all the changes that are going on over on Instagram. But we don't always hear about what's changing over on YouTube. And this is probably why some of us tend to believe some outdated YouTube advice. Because YouTube has really changed within the past three years and what you think might work on YouTube and what you hear as advice for YouTube is outdated. Now if you watch this reel from my friend Owen, he talked, he talks about how search based traffic should be a piece of your strategy. And I 100% agree with him. But what we're not hearing about when it comes to YouTube is how search based traffic, first of all, like he said, is going to take a long time to pay off for you. And if I know you, you're pretty impatient about getting results on YouTube. But because it's long term, there is another tactic you need to be doing to jumpstart or kickstart your YouTube channel's growth. So I'm going to break down what your YouTube strategy should look like since only a small piece of it should be YouTub search. At the end of this video, I'm going to break down the exact strategy you should be using if you're starting a YouTube channel from scratch. As in like what's the ratio of traffic source tactics you should be using? So I'm going to tell you, listen to this whole video and stick to the end because I'm going to give you that formula. Okay? That key traffic source that you really want to be focusing on to give your channel a kickstart is going to be the homepage. But before I dive into that, I want to talk a little bit more about this search based traffic because I know I'm going to get some people out there that tell me keyword research, search and tags and all of that good fun stuff. Yes, I know it should be a portion of your strategy. So we're going to talk about it now. Hit that like button if you're ready to hear this traffic breakdown and how it all fits into your full YouTube strategy pie. Here's the facts. When it comes to focusing on YouTube search, focusing on keywords, focusing on SEO, it is going to be a slow burn, meaning it is going to take a long time for you to see things coming in from YouTube search. Yes, these videos are literally going to work for you for years to come. I mentioned in my video last week about the video that I had that still gets views and grows my email list to this day, 33 months after I published it. But it didn't necessarily go viral the first months that I had this video live. It's been this two and a half year process that has brought in the 55,000 views. So that is one of the two reasons that I see entrepreneurs and people who get started on struggle with when they focus on pure purely search based traffic, they basically get impatient. They want to see results. Now Trina and when you focus on search, that isn't going to happen. Now there's another reason why focusing on search based traffic is not the best idea. And the thing is, search based views aren't necessarily the most valuable viewer. You see this viewer comes to your channel based on something they typed in search. So they have a question, but they just needed the solution. They're not connecting with you, they are watching, getting the answer to their question and piecing out. That is what happens when you focus solely on search based traffic. You're not creating repeat customers, so to speak. And guess what? I'm going to throw in another reason why search based traffic should be just a small sliver and not your whole YouTube strategy. Because I know it's hard to kick old habits. The algorithms behind YouTube, yes, there are multiple have become so smart that it knows exactly what you want to watch. So most people don't even go to search. They are logging into their YouTube homepage and that is how they are picking what they are watching. This is just like TikTok for you page. This is just like the Instagram discover page. So that's how I want you to think about the homepage on YouTube. And this is exactly what we did with a client of ours. We got our strategy built around a little bit of search, but predominantly using our piggyback strategy that we teach inside of our program Video Strategy Academy to understand what her audience is being served on their homepage. So we're creating content around those topics and this is why her channel spiked in less than three months. Now if you're a little bit impatient of seeing results like this for your YouTube channel, hit that like button because I'm going to walk you through how you can do this. Your very first step here is to stop spending all your freaking time on keyword research and looking for the best tags. Yes, you should have some videos that focus on keyword research. But you need to be putting all of that time that you've been taking searching for keywords and put into these things three key things on TikTok and Instagram for you to blow up or to go viral. What happens is when you publish A video, those platforms serve it to a sample group of people. And if that sample group of people watch it, rewatch it, get to the end, share it, Instagram, TikTok will then put it in front of another group of people. If you pass that test, then you get a bigger one and a bigger one. That's how you ultimately go viral. This is how YouTube works as well. If YouTube puts you on the homepage when you publish a video to test it, to see how it does title and your thumbnail cause people to click on it, do people watch the end of that video and do you create a binge session on YouTube? So let's dive into these three things a little bit more. That first key metric is your click through rate. Because listen, if nobody's clicking on Your video, your YouTube channel, your videos are dead in the water. You must determine what your title of your video is going to be and what you're going to put on that thumbnail before you even start crafting any of the content you're going to say in that video. So the way that I do it is I will generally search for a topic and then I start to figure out what is my unique approach. Then I'm coming up with a title. And it's not a keyword focused title. It is a buzz worthy title, like a buzzfeed title, right? And that is because you need people to be intrigued and you also want to make sure that thumbnail is appealing. You need to get their attention. Now the reason why we come up with a title and a thumbnail first is because then we can craft that first five seconds, our hook of our video to keep people intrigued based on the title. Seriously, you probably have less than five seconds for people to decide is she going to give me what she in that title or am I going to the suggested videos and finding something else. You also need to keep them watching. This is your audience retention. This is your gold coins on YouTube. The longer you get people to watch your videos, you're collecting loads and loads of gold coins. And that video particularly becomes more valuable to YouTube. So you need to stop talking about yourself in the beginning because all that is doing is causing people to leave your video. In fact, if you're doing that right now, check your audience retention graphs. The other thing that you don't want to do is you don't want to break down. Here's what you're going to learn today. No, they want you to deliver on that title as quickly as possible. So get to that point. I do want to Go back to audience retention again real quick and just share some simple tips to keep people watching. What I would do is when you are filming your videos is to break up segments of your script into chunks and so that you can pause, you can cut things out. When you add jump cuts into your videos like this, it makes your video feel like it is going faster than it actually is and people stay more engaged. You can also move your camera around just slightly to again get a different angle, just like this. I literally just move my camera slightly to the left to get a different angle to again keep your eye engaged. Nothing super fancy. These are all simple things that you can do to make your videos more engaging, to get people to the end without super fancy editing. In fact, if you would like to see a more in depth video about how to make your editing better on YouTube, leave the comment below Video editing, please. And I'll add that to my content calendar. But I want to make sure that you're interested in learning about like these tricks and tips for editing your videos. All right, listen up now. I'm about to share with you, I think a secret sleeper strategy that not enough people are talking about when it comes to really blowing up your YouTube channel. And it is your end screen. So at the end of every single video that you can create, you have 20 seconds where you can add a clickable video. The name of the game on YouTube is binge watch, watch, watch, watch, watch, right? And if you create a video, like I said, that people click on end and you extend session time, meaning you get people to watch more YouTube content. That video is solid gold for YouTube because not only are you extending watch time on YouTube, which again makes you more valuable, but you're getting people into another video of yours. And the more and more content somebody watches of you, the more likely they're going to subscribe, the more likely they're going to go down a rabbit hole of your content, the more they're going to fall in love with you and become, you know, part of your community. Which leads me into Another aspect of YouTube that I want to talk about here real quick. So Many people look YouTube as a search traffic source, but YouTube is a community platform. YouTube is a social media platform. And this slips by so many people. But if you think about it, why do so many of our kids nowadays want to be YouTubers? Because they fell in love with a YouTuber, they became a part of a YouTuber's community. And so, so many of us think like we need to be on these other social platforms. To engage with our audience and engage with our people. You can do that here on YouTube while also having search based evergreen content. Now let's talk about if you're starting a new channel and what your ratio of your content should look like. When we are building a strategy for a brand new channel for one of our clients, we do the firework approach. Again this is something that we do in our agency and something we teach our clients inside of our program Video Strategy Academy. And the reason why we do this approach is because our audience is entrepreneurs and specifically in our agency we work with multi six figure and seven figure entrepreneurs and so they are on YouTube to help their business business grow. So in firework approach, basically what we do is for every one search based traffic video, like our strategy is a hit search, we have four Spark videos that we target the homepage for. So like I said, it starts with the core video, which is our search base evergreen video. And in this particular video, the whole purpose is to share really amazing information so that people are like, wow, this is awesome. And then we share a resource or we share a call to action for people to leave the platform because we want that video to live for a long time, we want to send constant leads to our clients business. Then we follow up with these Spark videos and the purpose of these are to kickstart traffic to that channel. The goal is to get them on the homepage and at the end of the video, get them over to watch the core video. So making the algorithm happy by getting people to click on them, watch them and watch another video. But we're ultimately growing the business as well because if they then go to that second video, a couple things happen. They're more likely to subscribe to that channel. They're more likely to like that person if they watch a second video. They're more likely to become part of that person's community and they're more likely to take action at the end of that video to sign up for their newsletter, their webinar, whatever it is that they pitch.
