Why YouTube Ads Can Destroy Your Channel (Do This Instead)

This is a YouTube video titled "Why YouTube Ads Can Destroy Your Channel (Do This Instead)" created in March 2025. The content features Trena Little delivering a detailed monologue advising business owners against using YouTube ads to grow their channels, explaining how ads can harm organic reach and long-term growth. Instead, she advocates for building a sustainable organic content strategy to attract the right audience and generate sales. The video is educational and focused on YouTube marketing strategies for business owners.
Being duped to grow your channel, the easy route can actually kill it. If somebody is telling you to run ads to boost your channel growth, get away as fast as possible because you could end up damaging your YouTube channel beyond repair. I've seen so many business owners fall into this trap, spending thousands of dollars on ads here on YouTube, only to realize once the money stops, so does their views. And even worse yet, organic reach never recovers. I want to show you exactly why this happens and what you should focus on doing instead of running ads to your channel. I really want to make sure this shortcut you hear about isn't actually the biggest mistake you'll make on your YouTube channel. Here's what most people don't realize. YouTube's algorithm is designed to keep people engaged, watching, and it will promote content that does that. It doesn't have to deal with SEO or ranking and search engine optimization. Okay, the algorithm has completely changed from that. That's YouTube circa 2019. YouTube wants people to have a great experience on the platform. So it's going to put in front of people content it thinks that person will like and continue to watch. Because the more people watch YouTube videos, the happier they are to be on the platform and come back to it. But the more ads YouTube can run, thus making more money for YouTube. When you run YouTube ads, you're paying to push your videos in front of people who didn't ask for it. They're either not searching for that topic or they're not clicking on it organically on their homepage. So when they're forced it, what happens when you see an ad on YouTube? As soon as you can hit click next or skip, you do so YouTube sees that video even though you're running an ad to it as weak engagement because your audience retention dies off as soon as they click skip the ad. And here's where things get worse. Yes, I said worse. When you start running these ads, YouTube gathers information on those ads driven viewers, those ones that are skipping your video the second that they can. And it will start showing your future content to the wrong people. The people who weren't watching your videos because they were being forced these ads. I have a client who had a coaching program and she was running YouTube ads to get coaching clients. At first she got a flood of views. She's like, this is amazing, I'm getting all these views super easy. But once she stopped running those ads and I said views, I didn't say sales, I said views. And she stopped running those ads, views diminished and organic reach pretty much collapsed. Why? Because YouTube had been optimizing her videos for ad viewers, not real ready to buy viewers. And again, the second she stopped spending money on ads because she wasn't getting clients, all of her organic views significantly dropped. Because YouTube ads had trained the algorithm to push content to an uninterested audience, not her ready to buy audience. So instead of actually building trust and an audience that grows with you and watches multiple videos of yours to then convert into working with you, ads create this temporary spike but will destroy your long term reach. As a business owner you need to know what matters most right now. How do you get more sales? Right? The worst thing you can do on YouTube is attract the wrong people. Because if you have the wrong people watching your videos, the people who aren't going to buy from you, you just going to keep putting your videos in front of those. And now you're in a cycle of people watching your videos and not buying. And it's hard to get out of. This is what running ads on YouTube does. It gets you into this terrible cycle. Because ads driven traffic is cold. They aren't actively looking for your content. So they're much less likely to buy. Your organic traffic is high intent traffic. They're the ones that are actively searching for a solution to their problem. They're on YouTube looking at for how to solve that problem. And that's when your video comes up and that's the person that's going to buy and that's who you want YouTube to put you in front of more. This is why organic YouTube traffic converts better than any ad. And viewers who find you naturally. Even if it feels like it's slow. Even if you're only getting 100 views on a video that is 100 potential sales if it's the right people. Because viewers who find you naturally are in buying mode. Ad viewers are just being interrupted and being ready to click next. So what should you do instead? You're like Trina. But it feels like YouTube is going to be a grind. It feels like it's going to be a long term thing over on YouTube and I don't have the time. I need sales now. Well the best way to speed up your results is make sure you're focusing on the right content. And I mentioned this in many of my videos. I will link to one of the videos. I talk about clearly understanding your ready to buy viewer right here. But you need to be focusing on creating the right content strategy because ad traffic will dry up the minute your money dries up. And ads are not cheap. Organic traffic will snowball every time you put out a new video and you drive organic traffic and YouTube understands who that person is best for that video. YouTube will find more of those people and more of those people without you needing to even spend a dime on ads. Because your two options here are keep dumping money into ads forever so the momentum never dies on your channel. Or publish a strategic video once a week and have it bring clients leads and sales for years. This is why as a business owner you need to be building a long term sustainable YouTube strategy that you can manage as well as all the other things you need to manage in your business and in life. Ads can be a quick confidence booster and get you excited, but putting your time into building and a strategy on YouTube is the investment and the time that's going to pay tenfold. Time over time, over time. You now know hopefully why ads are not the answer and the trap, the easy trap you should fall into and why you need to use organic reach. But so many business owners still do this organic strategy wrong and they don't get sales and they still Mess up their YouTube channel. So I want to break down what most business owners get wrong on YouTube and what you should be doing instead so you can start getting sales from the first couple of videos that you post and stop relying on those launches and webinars and marketing tactics all in this video that's on your screen right now.
