Milk type on a coffee. Size on a sandwich. Extra shots, add bacon, hold the onions. Modifiers are how your customers make an order their own, and they're one of your best tools for capturing upsell revenue. Let's break down modifiers and modifier groups. So, what are they? Modifiers are the options a customer selects on an item: milk type, size, toppings, extra shots, sauces, removals. Modifier groups—Square calls them "modifier sets"—are the containers that organize those options. A "coffee size" group, for example, holds small, medium, and large. Here's how they help your business: First, they let customers customize an order exactly how they want, which lifts satisfaction and cuts down on order errors. Second, they capture upsell revenue. Every extra shot, every "add bacon," every "make it a large" is incremental revenue that flows straight to your bottom line. Third, they reduce back and forth. Clear modifier choices mean fewer special instruction notes and faster order prep. And fourth, they're consistent. The same prices, options, and rules every single time—on mobile, on web and in your POS. Now, setup. Modifiers are created in Square, not in the Per Diem dashboard. Here's the flow: 1. In Square, go to Items, then Modifier Sets. 2. Create your modifier group, like "Milk Options," and add the individual modifiers: whole, oat, almond. 3. Set your minimum and maximum rules. Choose One or Choose Up to 3 and the price for each modifier. 4. Attach the group to every item that should use it. And this part matters: modifiers aren't inherited automatically. Each item needs its modifier sets explicitly assigned. 5. Sync per diem under Settings, Sync POS, Sync All. Your modifiers flow in and appear right on the item. From the Perdium dashboard, Menu Management, Items, Edit Item, Modifiers, click the three-dot icon on a modifier group to customize it. From there, you can turn on the modifier quantity selector, so customers can pick quantities, like "two extra shots," and you can see the sub-modifiers inside the group. The modifiers themselves, their options, rules, and pricing, all stay in Square. Perdium reads them and renders them on your channels. You can show modifier images on the product page if you've uploaded them to Square and automatically hide any option that's sold out under Settings, then App Features. So how does it look for your customer? When they tap an item in your app or on your web ordering site, they land on the item detail page with every available modifier group. Each one shows its name, its options, the pricing, plus $0.75, and any rules, like "choose one" required. As they make their selections, the running total updates in real time. When they add the item to cart, all those choices come along, and they flow to your POS exactly as configured, so prep and pricing are always accurate. And nested modifiers. Say, choosing sauce, then picking which sauces, work the same way on both mobile and web, with a simple drill-down. That's modifiers and modifier groups. Happier customers, fewer errors, and real upsell revenue. All flowing straight from Square to your branded app and website. Link below to see it live.
