Per Diem Visibility Controls: Real-Time Menu Management Explained

Per Diem's visibility controls let restaurant operators instantly hide or show menu items and categories on customer-facing ordering platforms without touching their POS system. Toggle switches control what appears to customers in real time, useful for sold-out dishes, seasonal offerings, or testing new items. Setup takes three steps: build the menu in your POS, sync it to Per Diem, then manage visibility from the interface.

Sold out of a dish in the middle of the lunch rush? Want your pastries to show only in the morning? Visibility controls are one of your most powerful levers. They let you change exactly what customers see and when, in real time, without ever touching your POS setup. Here's how it works: You create and name your categories and items in your POS, like Square. Then, in Per Diem, you flip simple visibility toggles to control whether customers see them. In your mobile app, and on your web ordering site. Categories live under Menu Management, then Categories. Turn a category off, and the whole section—and every item inside it—disappears from customer view instantly. Items live under Menu Management, then Items.
You can hide an individual item without touching its category, or drill into a category and toggle items one by one. And if you're using Square menu mode, turning a top-level category on gives you a choice: switch on just that parent category, or cascade visibility down to every subcategory and item inside it.
Why does this matter?
Because it's real-time menu management, with no sync delays, and no POS changes. 86 an item the moment you run out, no edits in Square required. Run seasonal or promotional menus—pastries in the morning, holiday items gone the second the season ends. Set location-specific availability—hide something at one store while it stays live at the others. Test new products quietly—launch them, gather feedback, then make them fully visible when you're ready. And separate out catering—toggle entire categories into catering mode right from the categories table so they appear in the catering filter without cluttering your regular menu. All of it is immediate. And all of it is reversible. No waiting on a sync, and no risk of deleting anything permanently. Setting it up takes just a few steps. 1.
Create and organize your menu in your POS.
Name your categories, add your items, set prices, and assign modifiers. All the core content lives there. 2. In Perdium, run a sync. Settings, Sync POS, Sync All. That pulls in your latest categories, items, images, and prices. 3. Head to Menu Management, Categories, and Items to review what's synced. 4. Toggle visibility on for the categories and items you want customers to see. Anything left off stays hidden. And 5, optionally, drag your categories and items into the order you want. That order is exactly what customers see when they browse. One thing to remember: naming and pricing always live in your POS. Visibility, order, catering assignment, and promotional placement—those you control in Per Diem. What you toggle in the dashboard is exactly what appears for your customers. Visible categories show up as browsable sections, the order you arrange them. Visible items appear inside their category in the order you drag them. Hidden categories and items are simply gone. There's no sold-out placeholder, the item just isn't there. Catering items always show in their regular category with a blue catering-only badge, and customers can narrow down to catering with a filter pill on web or a tab on mobile that appears automatically the moment you have at least one catering item turned on. And for multiple locations, if you've set location-specific availability, an item only shows where you've allowed it. The app respects that filtering automatically. Best of all, changes take effect within seconds. No app update required. So if you toggle a category off at 9 AM because you sold out, A customer opening the app at 9:01 simply won't see it. That's Visibility Controls—real-time command over your menu, right from your dashboard. Build it in your POS, control it in Perdium. Link below to see it live.
