He spent roughly three months backcountry skiing across the Ural Mountains, followed by a couple of months kayaking down a Siberian river. While resupplying in a small Ural town, he and his expedition partner were arrested because they were traveling on business visas— the only long‑term visas available at the time—while engaging in tourism activities. In 2017, I spent about 6 months in Russia skiing for about 3 months down the Ural Mountains and then kayaking for another couple of months or so down a river through Siberia. On this journey, myself and the partner I did that expedition with, the expedition partner, we got in trouble in the Ural Mountains. They arrested us on arrival in some small town for resupply. We had business visas because back then the longest tourist visa you could get was 30 days and we needed much longer. And back then they took us to court for committing tourism while on a business visa. So you can never, you can never win really.
