Tyler Wagner asks whether creative ideas come from deliberately seeking out stimulating situations or just happen spontaneously. The guest jokes around, and Tyler mentions reading Jordan Peterson as an example of consuming ideas from outside sources.
Are you purposely trying to put yourself in a situation where you're having these ideas, or is it you're sitting at bay and they're just happening all the time?
Are you high, Tyler?
No, no, no, I'm not. I read Jordan Peterson though, I would say.
I think that, you know, ideas come from— my belief is ideas come from exposing yourself to them. So the more Influences, inspirations, things that you expose yourself to, whether you read books, go to movies, go to plays, walk down the street taking pictures, have conversations with people you don't know and haven't met before, engaging in life, in other words, which is what I find to be the most fun, is engagement. And that's when I know that I'm on the path of something I like because I'm engaged and I enjoy it. So the more those dots that you take in— and I'm calling these dots those different knowledge points that inspire you in some way or make you curious, because curiosity is the fuel that drives you to ideas and things to do. And so the more curious you are, the more you take in. The more you take in, the more dots you have to connect so you can make these different constellations up in your brain happen. And I think that's where ideas come from, creativity comes from. And the more you expose yourself to, the more that you can, in a sense, fathom doing.
