How To Commit To Something

Tyler Wagner explains why people fail at goals: they aim too high. Instead, start small and incremental. He shot five videos in one day, released one weekly for a month, and turned it into lasting habit. Reduce coffee or ice cream gradually, one habit at a time, with a set deadline.

How to commit to something. How to commit to your future self. How to do the things that you want to do that you keep putting off. This is how I do it and this is how you can do it. So my name is Tyler Wagner, founder of Authors Unite, and that's what I'm going to talk about in this video is that What I've learned is that to commit to something, why most people fail in committing to their goals is because they start too big. They make it too complex. They're like, "I want to lose weight," so they're like, "I'm only going to eat broccoli." Too extreme, right? Like, that's just never gonna happen. Even if you do it, you'll do it for like a week max, and that would even be like so long, probably like 2 days maybe, if you're lucky. Probably 2 hours for most of us. You're gonna fail. So what you have to do is commit to a smaller goal that allows you to build the habit so that it becomes natural and organic and a part of your normal routine. A prime example, these videos. And I even kind of overcommitted at first, but I am also more natural with just like videos, like doing videos to me is fairly easy. What I wanna say in this is that I committed to myself that Monday through Friday I want one YouTube and Facebook video to go out every day, Monday through Friday. So what do I do? I actually shoot 5 videos in one day and then my team distributes them once per day. And because I'm now, but I didn't like commit to doing it for a year or anything like that, I just said I wanna try to do this for one month. One video per day. Now that I've done that, it is a natural part of, like, me. Like, I do not foresee myself at any time soon, like, in the future, stopping doing one video per day, Monday through Friday, that gets released. And it's because I've, like, hit that mark, that threshold of, like, few weeks to a month, it's now a part of my normal routine. So another example would be, and again, just because that one I even went a little far, Say you wanna quit drinking coffee. Don't say you're gonna quit drinking coffee forever. Start by lowering the amount of coffee you drink. And then start by only drinking Monday through Friday, not on the weekends. And then start only drinking on like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. You know what I mean? And like lower it, lower it. So for me, instead of committing to 10 videos a day, I committed to 1 video per day, okay? And things like that. And say you wanna eat healthier. Don't say, "I'm never gonna eat ice cream again," 'cause that goal is impossible. You know what I mean? You gotta start lower. Like, "I'll only eat ice cream 2 times a week." If you eat it every day and you wanna stop completely. Only eat it for 2 times a week for a month. Boom, achieved it. Next. Say that, remove one of those days. Then remove it altogether for a month. And slowly get into the place where it becomes a natural habit in your life. Because once it's that, just like these videos are to me, it's like, if a video doesn't come out Monday through Friday sometime, hit me up because something's probably wrong. Because it is now built into me to do this, that it's just, it's a part of me. Like, it's going to come out. So if you make it a part of you by gradually getting to your goal and not overcommitting to begin with. We all know, that like I wanna do one video, what's the over-commitment look like, right? So I want to do a video every day for the rest of my life for multiple reasons. I wanna help people, it'll help me, it'll grow the business, all those reasons. But instead of committing to that and then probably failing eventually, what I did is just committed to a month, right? And now that I've achieved that, it's like, okay, can I do another month? Like, yeah, absolutely. It's now a custom to me, it's a part of me. Okay? So make it a part of you by gradually getting there, and then you'll hit like this rhythm, this habitual pattern. It'll just be a part of you, and then everything after that becomes easier. And then work on another goal, right? And don't try to do like multiple at once. One at a time. Like don't try to quit coffee, quit alcohol, eat healthy, do all that at once. It's like too much. Do one at a time, master it, it's a part of you. Next thing, master it, it's a part of you, next thing, and so on, okay? Talk to you soon.
