How To Get Over Writer’s Block

Tyler Wagner argues writer's block is a mental construct you create by believing in it. Reject that belief, then write one hour daily for three to four weeks like you'd train for a workout. The difficulty fades and flow follows.

How to get over writer's block. So my name is Tyler Wagner. I'm the founder of AuthorsUnite.com, and what I want to talk to you about today is how to get over writer's block. And it's really simple. The truth is, is writer's block isn't even real. Writer's block is something that you create when writing is difficult, which in all honesty, writing is difficult in general, especially when you first start. Starts, just like anything. Riding a bike when you first get on one is difficult, and then it becomes one of the easiest, second-nature things in your entire life. So at the end of the day, writer's block is just not real. You just haven't put in the work to get yourself into a state of like writer's flow, to realize what you need to do to get into that state to continuously write on a consistent basis. So how do you avoid writer's block? Well, first you realize that it's just something you're creating out of your your mind wanting to succumb to relaxation and be weak. Okay? So that's the first step. If you actually believe writer's block is real, then it can appear in your life. If you believe that it's not real, then the chances of it appearing are pretty much slim to none. So first, remove it as a possibility because it's not actually real. You just create it and you've just heard it all over the internet like, "Oh, writer's block this, writer's block that." It's all bogus. It's not a real thing, okay? So after you do that, then practice writing. Get through the hard times. Write for 1 hour every day for 3 weeks to a month and then see how often you feel this so-called writer's block after you've put in the work, after you've become accustomed to it. It's the same thing with going to the gym, okay? So when you go to the gym, the first couple days are terrible. You get really sore. It's really hard because you're just not used to it. It's not built in. It's not a habit. So you have to create a habit of writing and then writer's block dissipates. It's not something that's just like, "Oh, I can't write today." It's like you can write any day you want. You can walk any day you want. You can think any day you want. You can do whatever you want. Okay? So how to get rid of writer's block, not to repeat myself over and over again, but I just think this is really important for a lot of people that want to write books out there. They think writer's block is in their way, but it's something that they've just created in their mind. It's not even real. So first, writer's block is not real. Second, put in the work, and then writer's block will remove itself from your life.
I'll talk to you soon.
