Alright everyone, welcome back to another episode of the Business Blast Podcast. I'm your host Tyler Wagner. Today I have Rick Decker with us. He's a scholar, CEO of Decker Criminology Advisors, LLC, podcast host of The Sociocriminologist, and author living in Charleston, South Carolina area. So welcome to the show, Rick.
Hey Tyler, thanks for having me. Glad to be here.
Of course, we're glad to have you on, and we will dive into the first one. The first question I have for you, Rick, is what is the best story from your life that has an underlying valuable message?
Well, best story had happened when I was with Father Duffy. I was a young man, went through not a real good childhood, and he and I were planting a tree one day, and I was complaining about my life, and he said, you know, Rick, he said, be like a tree. The tree has no control where it is planted or nurtured. It just takes what comes at it until nature comes and takes its life and beauty. Be like that tree. I love that.
And yeah, yeah, that's very good. And what is the most valuable piece of information we should know that's within your expertise or industry?
Follow the evidence. When I used to train my criminal defense investigators, and even as a scholar, as a criminologist, Follow the evidence, follow the empirical evidence, and that will give you the answers that you're looking for.
And what is your best piece of overall business advice, so not necessarily industry-specific?
Do not be afraid. Keep going. Let fear be behind you and just go, and don't worry about what other people think.
And if you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would that be?
Quit looking over his shoulder and being afraid.
And in your opinion, what's the key to happiness?
Communication and balance in life.
And what is the best book that you've read and what was the number one thing you learned from that?
Achmed Deedle's book The Choice. The thing I learned from that was that we have control over our destiny. We just never think we do.
And what is your favorite quote and why?
My favorite quote is by Zig Ziglar: You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want in life. And that's the secret to everything. If you want to be successful, you have to help other people achieve what they want. So many people in our society are all about destroying others. We have to uplift each other.
I love that quote as well. And thank you so much for coming on, man. The last question I have for you before we let you go is, where's the best place for people to find you online?
Um, LinkedIn under Richard Decker, or my website, uh, deckercriminologyadvisors.com.
Perfect, man. Thank you again for joining us. We appreciate it.
Thanks, Tyler.
