All right everyone, welcome back to another episode of the Authors Unite show. Today I got Paul Getter with us, so welcome to the show, man.
Hey, thanks a lot, Tyler. My privilege of being here.
Of course, grateful to have you on. So to kick us off, can you tell us a little bit more about you and what you do?
Yeah, so, uh, my name is Paul Getter, the internet marketing nerd. Had the privilege of working with some of the top entrepreneurs in the world, guys like Tai Lopez, Bob Proctor, Kevin Harrington. Really, the list could go on and on. Some people call me the guy behind the guys. I don't know about all that, but it's been a privilege to work with some really cool people, some of the top entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 companies, A-list celebrities. It's just been a blessing and really cool. So we do digital marketing, help build brands, help build systems, optimize them, and scale them. Than for people online.
Got it, okay. So, and I wanna get all into that, and actually it isn't a lie, but I have to call it out right from the start that tell us your Instagram handles, and this is not—
Yeah, yeah, yeah, so my Instagram handle is Paul, just P-A-U-L. It's not like paul_123-, you know, blah, blah, blah, but it's just Paul.
Yeah, it's amazing, 'cause I tried to get Tyler, and then I tried to get Ty, just T-Y, 'cause I was like, that would be amazing. Yeah, those were not available. I even got on TikTok 2 weeks ago trying to get Tyler and Ty, and that's already taken.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I, I didn't get to, uh, TikTok soon enough, so I didn't get anything too glamorous there. But, uh, yeah, Instagram, I've got Paul, and also, uh, my kind of business-related, um, when it comes to teaching people marketing, is Nerds.
Yeah, which is also just— I mean, both. I'm just—
yeah, yeah, yeah.
So So I had to call that out, not even to plug it, it's awesome.
Yeah, thanks a lot, man. Thanks a lot.
So, okay, so, and now your company mainly what it does is helps build systems and scale businesses online. That's accurate?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Um, in the internet marketing world, we call it funnels. Yeah, so we help build people, uh, funnels, uh, webinars, digital products. And so we help, number one, build it out, and then once it's all built out, we run traffic to it— Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google. And I always tell people we help, help them build a system that will generate them revenue while they sleep.
Yeah, absolutely. So, well, can you— let's talk about the platforms to start. Do you use like ClickFunnels or what are you using to build?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, uh, ClickFunnels is a very popular platform that we use, makes things very easy. Unless we're doing some customized stuff, that would probably be one of our preferred platforms that we use is ClickFunnels. And then every now and then we would integrate that, you know, like the membership site into something like Teachable or Kajabi. Although ClickFunnels does have a membership portal that you can build stuff out, sometimes we use something more robust like Kajabi or Teachable. Yeah, so those are kind of the, the normal platforms that we would use. Again, if it's something more customizable, then our team's just going to build it out from scratch.
Got it. Yeah, that makes sense. And so, you know, without breaking any like client confidentiality, whatever you're like, whatever you can share, like one of the— well, I want to hear two stories. One, let's start with, you know, one of your client just like crazy success stories. I'm sure you had this in the beginning, like for yourself, was there like you had to learn some hard lessons? I'm assuming maybe, you know, maybe you spent like $20 grand on Facebook ads and didn't get any return. I don't know, like, yeah. For each of those?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, um, well, I mean, if you look around my Instagram, uh, you'll see that I've worked pretty closely with, uh, for example, Tai Lopez. Um, worked with him for several years now, teach, uh, speak at a lot of his masterminds and conferences. And, um, basically had the— I've had the privilege of not only teaching in his courses, but we've, um, ran ads at a very high scale for his his courses and his products and helped in consulting and putting things together. For example, MentorBox, we, from day one, we helped build that out and help run ads to it. And really, it's, it's an awesome platform. So, um, Ty Lopez, Alex Meara, a couple of the greatest marketers in the world. So, uh, when it comes to hard lessons, you know, a lot of times entrepreneurs, they love to share the stories about Man, how I made $100,000 in one month and stuff like that. But, but I've got stories of how I lost $100,000 in one month.
Yeah, I want to hear those, man.
Yeah, yeah. So, you know, the thing about different ad platforms is understanding how they work, how to be compliant. And I remember back in the day, we were doing things really big with Google AdSense. We would build out these viral websites. You know, these were the websites that, you know, it was like, hey, the 10 popular things that you need to know about New York City. And then you go through and you just click these pictures. And, you know, as an advertiser, as a marketer, we would have these sites just really saturated with ads and you would generate a good revenue in doing that. Well, we were learning it and we were doing really good, making great money. Uh, but it was, it was quick success. And so we didn't know all of the ins and outs and the compliance and different things. And so we were, what we were doing, it was what we called, uh, AdSense arbitrage. So you would buy traffic from one source, say for example Facebook, and you might pay a penny a click and then you would send it to the website and you might do the ads, make 3 or 4 cents per visitor. So you could see you pay 1 cent and you make 4 cents. That's a great ROI. I used to tell people, I'm going to teach you how to make a penny because, um, when you, when you learn how to make a penny, you just scale that. Uh, but in doing this, again, we didn't know all of the ins and outs. And I remember one month we were, we were, uh, uh, in a position where it was, we're going to be getting a check for 6 figures. And then all of a sudden we got an email from Google AdSense, like, uh, your account is not compliant, blah, blah, blah. And that check that we thought that we were going to get, it disappeared. And Google takes that. So yeah, so we lost $100,000 or more in, again, just not knowing all the intricacies and doing ads and running AdSense properly.
Got it.
Yeah.
And there is a lot, man. Sometimes it's hard. I mean, with Facebook now, there's so much stuff.
Yeah, yeah, man. I can tell you Uh, you know, when, when we started doing Facebook ads from day one, when you could start running ads on Facebook, we were doing it. And there was a day that you could do anything you want, any type of website, any type of offer. There was, it was like the wild, wild west. You could do anything you want, no problem. And then the pendulum swung, you know, to the, the other side because Facebook was getting so many complaints. And then it was like, if you were doing anything they didn't like, your accounts would get shut down and banned. And now I think it's probably came into the middle where, you know, Facebook gives you guidelines and, you know, they'll give you some warnings and, uh, if you don't comply, then they'll shut you down instead of like, oh, we don't like what you're doing, account gone, you know. Yeah.
So yeah, no, absolutely. So how, how did you get it? How did you get into this? Like when you were younger? Was it— I want to hear that story.
Like, yeah, yeah, you know, a lot of times people ask me the question, you know, how did you become an entrepreneur? I'm like, I had to pay the bills. It was nothing glamorous. It wasn't like I woke up like, hmm, I want to be an entrepreneur when I grow up. It was like, I got bills to pay, so I was going to do whatever I could, hustle as hard as I could just to pay the bills. So, uh, I was always interested, involved in internet. And at my age, I was doing stuff online before there was an internet. And I know that sounds like ancient to some people, but there was bulletin board systems. And this is the days of CompuServe and AOL and things like that. So I was always kind of playing around with it. And I was at a point of desperation where I lost a job and had to figure something out. And so I was building websites, I was playing around with Facebook and just saw that there was a really good opportunity to start making money through social media marketing. Being a person that was just kind of like first into these social media platforms and online marketing, I saw that there was a big demand for people to— they wanted to do it, they wanted to get leads, they wanted to get business, but they didn't know how to do it. But since I was playing around with it and learning it, I was, you know, really ahead of the game in that field.
Got it. And so with all the, like, let's talk about TikTok real quick. Do you see, what do you think of TikTok?
Yeah, so when it comes to TikTok, I set up a TikTok account, I don't know, for the first time about a month ago. And I have not made one post yet, but It's simply because every now and then I'd go on Instagram and Gary Vee would be there, "You gotta start up TikTok, you gotta start up TikTok." I'm like, "Oh, I gotta start a TikTok." So I started TikTok. Here's the thing with TikTok. I don't know where it's gonna go, but I would suggest, like Gary Vee, get in it, figure it out. If you can learn how to help people grow their brand on TikTok, people will pay you for that, plain and simple. When it comes to any social media platform, whether it's Facebook, Instagram, uh, you know, I remember back in the days we would help people grow Periscope. Periscope has just kind of faded off now, but any of these social media platforms, there's going to be individuals that want to grow and want to have a larger audience. And if you can learn how to do that, people will pay you to do it for them.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So, uh, a question for you on webinars. I, um, what's your thought on like the length of webinars? I think I, I used to do them like a couple years ago and I've had some success with them, but I feel now with just attention spans going down, like the, the era of like the 2-hour webinar is just kind of— it's to me, I just don't know who's watching 2-hour webinars. But I, I'm also not actively doing a webinar at the moment.
So what are your thoughts? Yeah, so we have done webinars for years now. Of course, you'll always have, uh, you know, some of these contrarians that just break the mold. I mean, you've got guys like Sam Ovens that you got to sit down, get the popcorn, and drink to watch. I think it's like, uh, over 2 hours, uh, for his webinar, but he's contrarian and, uh, he really prepares you. Like, if you're gonna watch my webinar, you better be ready for this. This webinar. But to say that you should do a 2.5 webinar may not be the best thing. I have seen— we used to say that a good webinar time would be an hour and a half. But yeah, people's attention span has decreased. And now we see 45 minutes to an hour might be a better timeframe because again, people's timeframe has decreased. Another thing that has kind of changed when it comes to webinar is everybody used to say, hey, you know, join my live webinar at such and such time. Now people have been exposed to so many live webinars that they know this is not really live. This has been pre-recorded and you're trying to play it back and pretend like it's live to me. So now people are saying on-demand webinars, or, you know, uh, even using different names than webinar, like masterclass and, and things like that. Got it.
Yeah, absolutely, man. Well, dude, listen, I, um, you're— what you've been able to do, especially with your handles on Instagram, um, but, and it's really cool to see, like, MentorBox. I mean, I think— I don't know what happened or something. Did they just go public or something, or was Or Alex or something I saw.
Yeah, so Alex just sold his, um, one of his companies that he was working with before, Zousk. I think it was $250-300 million, um, in the selling of Zousk. So yeah, got it, got it. But Alex are doing big things. Keep an eye out for them. They're doing some big things.
Absolutely. Um, so, so a couple things because our audience is like all about— most of them are authors and entrepreneurs. So what I think they already know where to follow you on Instagram, but if you want to mention it again. And then two, where can they— what's the best website for you if they're interested in what you do?
Yeah, so again, on Instagram, @Paul or @Nerds. And if you want to connect with me, we have a— my site is paulgetter.com. A cool little video about who I am, what I do there, and an application if you want to connect with us and jump on a call.
Perfect, man. Thank you again for coming on the show.
Thanks a lot, man. It's been my privilege.
