Alright everyone, welcome back to the Business Blast Podcast. I'm your host Tyler Wagner. Today we have Travis Barton with us. He is a high-performance lifestyle and business coach. So welcome to the show, Travis.
My man, so pumped to be here.
Thanks again for coming on. The first question I have for you is, what's the best story from your life that has an underlying valuable message?
I guess it would have to be the day I decided to take control and stop blaming the world for where I was and start taking responsibility. And Tyler, that was a tough decision to make, and that was something that was very difficult because I had to look at the man in the mirror and realize that he was the man who was responsible for where he was. I was anxious, I was broke, I was depressed, I was in a job I hated, I was miserable. And I was going through that cycle, that black hole for a number of years. And I just, I remember waking up one, it was like an afternoon. I woke up one afternoon and I'm walking by a half empty bottle of Cabernet that I had the night before. And I'm just like miserable. And I had to go to a job I hated. And I was not looking forward to it. You know when people say they hate Mondays? This was that job, right? And I was just, I looked at myself in the mirror and something just clicked in me. And I was like bitching and complaining. And I'm going, you've been doing this for the last few years. Something has to change and that has to happen within you, man. And whether or not you think everybody else is responsible for where you are, they're not. You have to choose to take responsibility back because when you place blame in the world, you're powerless to change your life. You're powerless to change your circumstances. But when you take responsibility, You have all the power in the world to change the way you respond to your circumstances. And that was the first day of the rest of my life where, you know, I began to get clarity on the kind of business I wanted to run and the kind of life I wanted to have and just, you know, attracting the kind of things that I really loved in my life. So that was probably the most important thing is choosing to take responsibility over placing blame in my life. And I do that with everything I do in my life. And therefore my life is I'm in control for the most part.
Thanks for sharing, man. I think it's interesting too. I think once you make that decision in life, it does kind of start to be like who you are with everything. Before that decision is made, it's like that victim role that I see a lot of people play. Once you actually take full responsibility, everything in your life, as you've seen, transforms. Thanks for sharing that.
You notice the more that people complain, the more it kind of crap they get in their lives, right?
Yep. I agree. And it's just, you know, when you're looking at it outside, it's like obvious to see sometimes, but when you're going through it, it's very not obvious. Like, you're like, this is not my fault. This is because my boss sucks, or this is because of where I live, or whatever thing you want to, you know, come up with. Excuses are very abundant. But when you can take full responsibility, it sounds weird, but it actually makes things easier because then you're not putting it on anybody else. You're just like, oh, this is broken, I'm going to go fix it now.
Yes, absolutely. Nailed it.
So the next question I have for you is, what's the most valuable piece of information we should know that's within your expertise or industry?
The most valuable information I would have to say is, well, I think it kind of transcends any industry really. And I think You know, we educate ourselves a lot in business. There's a lot of these tools and, you know, ideas and things that you can execute in your business. I think the most important thing is something that we tend to— it's been forgotten. I feel like we do everything else in our business except the foundation of what makes a successful business run. And that's relationships. People tend to forget that relationships is the fuel that drives any business. And we do all these things, you know, we spend all this time on fancy social media marketing and everything, and we're not social. You know, we spend all these, all this time on getting people to our lead pages, our websites, and we're not doing anything with that. You know, we're not really actually building natural quality relationships. And I would have any business out there consider, especially in my industry, that when you nurture a relationship, that's when you have the power to really make an impact, and not only in your life, but other people's lives as well. And that's where true success lies. That is where true success lies. I see a lot of people, they have numbers, they play the numbers games. They wanna go wide, they wanna reach a large amount of people. And they come to me and they say, "Man, I have like 30,000 Instagram followers and I'm not even full-time in my business yet." And I go, "How many of those are relationship, like real quality relationships?" body relationships. So while you're going wide, the numbers are good, it's great, you can't forget to go deep as well. So you got to remember to go wide and deep. Nature or relationships is what drives any great business. And that's the same— you read Think and Grow Rich, you read any great book on success in business, that's the foundation. So I think that's the most important thing to remember.
100%. I'm a big follower in, uh, in Gary Vaynerchuk, and that's what he says. He's like, I You gotta go deep, so I'm with you on that too.
Go deep, man. I mean, so many people, they try to hit like 100 people a day, and I'm going, but how many of those are quality? Gary Vaynerchuk also knows that, I think he responds to a lot of his social media because he understands the power in that. And if a guy like Gary Vaynerchuk does that, what does that tell you about the incredible power? I'll just tell a quick story.
Yeah.
This kid messaged me on Instagram, I don't know, it was about a year ago, and he goes, you know, I know you're probably not gonna read this, but I know you're a busy guy and you won't read this, but I think I just wanted to vent. And he's going through this heartbreaking thing in his life, just this horrible thing with this girlfriend who just broke his heart. And I read that and I really connected with that. And he left his number on the message. So I called him. And the guy was through the roof. He was so excited and he was practically crying and he was so grateful. And we created, I spent half an hour on the phone with him coaching him and creating this really this magic. And my point is, I come from a place of service in nurturing a relationship. I put no expectation on getting a client. I put no expectation on anything happening outside of just being of service. And that is the reason that I'm successful. I just, I want to really, really tell your audience here that that's the foundation, is really building effective relationships and doing it. I think when you do it from the heart too, it's really important.
Yeah, and that also again goes with Gary Vee. That's what he talks about a lot. He's like, why I'm crushing it is because I do everything without any expectation of getting anything in return. I'm just doing it because, you know, he's coming from a place of service as well. And he always talks about as well in relationships, he always likes to be 51%. Like, he's always given more value than the other person. And if you can do that, then like business just comes to you. It's a big transition because as you spoke about, I believe before too, with LeadPages, ClickFunnels, all these things which are great tools, you can't just focus on that, like your conversion costs or all that. You build these relationships, you build a great brand that people love, of service, people will come to you and then you don't even really have to do the Facebook ads because they're coming to you anyway.
You don't, I mean, and that's, it's not magic, guys, but it is, that's the beauty of business, and it's not that difficult, you know, it's really not. And Gary Vaynerchuk, you know, he says, all right, give 51%, give it your all, come from a place of your heart. I had a call recently, and the guy was struggling with sales, and I told him, you're putting your expectation on getting the sale. What you need to do is be present in the call and just be of service. Don't put your expectation on that and what's gonna happen, and he's been doing that. And so, and I'm pretty confident, actually I know that as a result of that, he'll get the sales anyway as a result.
Definitely. Well, it might be a very similar answer, but next question I have for you is what's your best piece of overall business advice that's not necessarily industry-specific, but I feel like we've kind of hit on that, so if you want to expand on it, we can.
Yeah, just real quick, I have, you know, 3 Ps that I always remind people to follow in business, or success in any area of life, whatever you want to do. If you want to lose weight, if you want to crush a new business, if you wanna, you know, whatever it is that you wanna do, 3 Ps. You read any great business book on this and in one way or another, they're gonna remind you of these 3 things. And that's passion, persistence, and patience. Be passionate about what you're doing because if you're passionate about what you're doing, it's gonna be easy to be persistent in it. And persistence is important because every business owner knows who's successful, right? They know that consistency and persistence is key, right? Too many people give up before they're even, you know, getting started. So persistence and then patience and never sacrificing your vision or your values for what it is that you deeply want. So passion, persistence, and patience. That's what I would definitely suggest.
And if you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would that be?
That is an amazing question. I recently wrote a book, kind of the foundation of this book was for my younger self. It was the book I needed. And I think I would have to say in a nutshell, for the book, it would be, don't worry. Don't feel like you have to follow the crowd just because everybody else is doing it. There's something in your heart that you deeply want. And don't sacrifice that because trust me, Travis, it's gonna work out in the end if you just follow it, if you follow your passions, if you're consistent in doing it. And just stop worrying so much about what everybody else is doing around you and just be who you are and show up in the world in a powerful way in that.
And in your opinion, what's the key to happiness?
I love this topic. There's— I think gratitude is hugely important. The concept of wanting what you already have instead of having what you want. Are focusing on wanting what you have rather than focusing on having what you want. Gratitude is deeply important. There's so much beauty around us at all times in life. And I think that how to slow down and to see that around us at all times is just— that's the foundation. So that gratitude and then choosing to live in the spirit of viewing the world and your challenges through a lens of possibility and positivity. So gratitude is all about lens of positivity, I think, is important in asking yourself, like, how can I grow from this? How is this a good thing? Right? If this were sent to me as a lesson, how can I grow? And then I think when you see the world through that lens of that perspective and see the world through the lens of gratitude, happiness just kind of becomes a part of who you are. It's a practice, man. It really is a practice. It doesn't happen overnight. But when you're cognizant of seeing the world and practicing that, it kind of happens as an inevitability.
And what's the best book you've read and what was the number one thing you learned from it?
Oh, best book I've ever read. Actually, I'll just— I'll tell you, the book that got me started on the whole— my journey in coaching was Dalai Lama, The Art of Happiness. So that's what I always kind of go to because that was the beginning of my journey. And The Art of Happiness was— it was like Wow, man, it was like reading that book was so impactful because that was the first book that I read that showed me that everything you want in your life is within you already. Happiness, you know, the foundation of the book, the thesis is about happiness. And if happiness is already in me, if that's something I can create, then I can create anything I want in my life. And so The biggest lesson from that book was that happiness, or really anything you want, is not something out there to be found. It's something that you create inwardly first.
Yes, man. And what's your favorite quote and why?
Life is too important to be taken so seriously. I love that quote because that's just a reminder for me to enjoy the good things and go through my challenges knowing, like Gandalf said, this too shall pass. And just, you know, get over it with a spirit of, a spirit of joy and not to really take anything too, too heavy or too seriously.
Well, thank you so much for coming on, man. The last question I have before we let you go is where's the best place for people to find you online?
