The Hard Truth That Changes Your Entire Life

A speaker challenges you to define the life and legacy you actually want, then act on it immediately. He references Mel Robbins' "Let Them Theory" on emotional maturity, shares losing 17 kg while managing a career and three kids, and argues that physical health directly fuels the mental clarity you need to stop postponing what matters.

How do you collapse time around what it is you want to achieve and the life you want to have and the legacy you want to make for yourself, for your family, and for the future generations? Right now, for a lot of you, and that was me for a long time, I'm like, I just can't even think past this year. I just need to focus on this year. Well, what is it you want this year? How do you want life to look? How, how do you want your relationship to be? How do you want work to look? How many days are you going to work? Like, when are you going to go back to work? Are you going to change work? What type of work are you going to be doing? What are you going to be learning? There's always this period before your success where you are putting the hard yards in, and I can tell you it's the most challenging period. I'm in one of those periods now. I'm going to hit next level everything, and I even had a cry to Pete this morning. I'm human too. My life's not perfect. No one's life's perfect. We're all going to have problems. And it's how we choose to perceive it and how we choose to either sweep it under that rug I talk about or choose to face it head on and go, actually, let me just— like, I'm a type of processing person where I go, I need to kind of think about why I reacted this way or why I'm feeling this way. I don't have that instant, um, response on the words to come out. For some of you might be fortunate enough where you have the instant response to go, oh my gosh, That's not working. I wish I was someone who could speak up immediately and like, oh damn, I wish I'd said this 12 hours ago. That's how I am. So confrontation can be very uncomfortable for many of us, but it's got to happen. And the first person you have to confront is you. You've got to really speak the truths and speak the untruths because we can lie to ourselves and we can pretend we're happy or pretend something's working. Or pretend we're not bothered by something that's happened. And you can't go on living like that. Okay, I've learned to be very blunt and open. Blunt's probably not the right word. Some of you may think I'm blunt sometimes, but I will target whatever it is. I will face it head-on. I'm not scared. I'm fearless. What will be will be. Like, these are the cards you're handed, great. Let's change them. Let's change the deck. I don't play cards, but it's just this— the analogy that's come to my mind at the moment. Now, what is it you need to face right now that you haven't resolved, or that's been lingering, or a conversation you've needed to have with somebody? Because they're not fun, because we know some people are going to react in a way that's going to really trigger us and set us off. Um, a really good book I really listened to lately was Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. If you haven't listened to that, it's a really easy audiobook to listen to, and it explains that really nicely. She went through a lot of, relationship breakdowns. And she said that she acted like a child, um, and she realized one day that she had to react differently and just let people be them and have their opinion. That's been my philosophy for a long time. So it's just an easy book. I thought, I'm just gonna listen to it. And over a couple of days, I listened to it again. Um, it's good to revisit things, it really is. And to really focus on, well, when you get that niggle, that little question mark, or that curiosity to look into something, I need you to do it. Okay, don't leave it to another day, another hour. Oh, do it tomorrow. Do it now. Yes, you've got to be organized. Yes, you've got to have certain apps available. Yes, you've got to have maybe some subscriptions available, or be organized enough to have purchased a book and have it ready for you at your bedside table and not stuck on a bookshelf, because even that's Yep, you can, can hinder you and you don't actually do it. Your life is not separate problems and no one's told you that before, and I know you know it, but I just want to speak truth to you. It is a conglomerate of different problems that all really are one problem, and we know, and you know it's coming, it all stems from you. Is it even a problem or are we perceiving it as a problem? Now, if you're feeling unproductive, well, why did you stay up late last night? Did you not eat well? Did you over-exercise and you're exhausted and your muscles are hurting? Or did you overwork and your body's aching? Start taking care of yourself. I'm here to remind you that, and I'm speaking to myself too. Every day I remind myself. And it's hard, some days are really hard, especially with 3 children. Even without children, life is hard. You really have to organize your life and yourself and put yourself in a position where you set yourself up to win. And you know what that is. I don't need to tell you that, because fixing a career may not be the only answer. Fixing, uh, or mending a relationship may be part of a lot of the answer because there's a lot of mental load, uh, having conversations, your health. That's the biggest thing. And one of Andy Elliott's biggest beliefs is— and this is where it was really interesting because I'd never kind of really focused on me and my health. I'm losing 17 kg now and I'm putting on more muscle, so that's, that's my goal. Uh, you've got to get yourself healthy and fit.
