The Truth About Bleeding Gums No One Talks About

Bleeding gums often signal deeper issues: poor saliva flow, stress-induced inflammation, and dietary acid. A clinician explains how mouth-breathing and bruxism reveal systemic problems linked to heart disease, and why stimulating saliva with citrus matters more than most dentists realize.

your proteins to your gut tissue. So saliva is really important, and we don't focus on it enough. Drink— someone who's got low salivary flow. So if we can't have more saliva and stimulate more with citrusy things, okay? And even if you think of a lemon, your saliva starts flowing.
Mine's flowing right now because I was talking about lemons.
Think about you, think about tasting a lemon. It's going to make your juices flow. So it's amazing what the mind does. Crazy. But you— interestingly You might have them going through divorce, navigating grief, navigating cancer or health issues, or a big shock to the system. Their mouths are telling you a story and we've just gotta ask those questions and find out, A, from a humanity and human point of view, how our patients really are. I've, I've got patients who have come in and they're like, I don't know how long I have to live. I know you have them too. And it's just, I just wanna be as healthy as I can and live as long as a, a good life as I'm allowed. And then you see them a year later, they're still here. That's really good. You don't know what they're going through. And a lot of the time we're just used to saying the same repeated over and over again, and we forget that people are going through stuff. We really forget that. So the fixations you're having, you're going to get a lot of information from them, and you're going to know that their mouth tells a story. You can look at someone's mouth and you know if they're a mouth breather or if they're a bruxer. If they've been to the dentist recently or a long time before you, if they've brushed. We're very good at observing and sometimes we ignore it because we don't have time. So give yourself the right time so you can really connect with your patient. Chronic cortisol, the other point, also shifts your immune response.
Most dental practice owners don't need more patients. They need to stop losing money from the patients they already have.
Let me explain.
A few years ago, I sat down and started looking at my numbers. Not production, not collections, the numbers nobody was paying attention to. Treatment acceptance, rebooking, new patient conversion, and And what I found shocked me. I wasn't losing money because I needed more marketing. I was losing money because revenue was leaking out of the business every single day. Patients saying yes to treatment somewhere else. Patients not returning. Opportunities being missed right in front of us. Six figures worth. And the crazy part, most practice owners never see it because they're too busy chasing more patients instead of fixing what's already happening inside their practice. That's exactly what I'll be teaching in my free Practice Mastery Masterclass. You'll discover where the hidden revenue inside your practice actually lives. The key numbers Every owner needs to know and the shifts that can unlock growth without spending another dollar on marketing. The opportunity you're looking for may already be inside your business. Chronic cortisol, the other point, also shifts your immune response towards the bacteria. So if you can't repel the bacteria, you can't even fight the bacteria. It becomes less capable of resolving any infection. So then you've got the chronic inflammation in the mouth. I've heard of stories of like 40-year-olds who have underlying issues due to inflammation. And I've had someone I know that had a 40-year-old patient that always talked about, a male. And one week they were there, the next week they were gone. They had a heart attack. And they come in, they looked retrospectively and said they had always come in with bleeding gums. Bacteria from their mouth causing havoc elsewhere. And I'm sure they, I don't think they were too overweight or anything like that. And I don't think they had any congenital issues or heart issues in the family, though it increases your risk, right? So if we can target one thing, this is what I say to patients, if I can help you live a better life, that's my goal. We're here to help our patients live a better life and live a better quality life. And they go, yes, I want that. Great. That's your first yes, reverse. So this patient, this friend who ended up dying of a heart attack, and she wondered why I didn't— next appointment, I was young. So you probably have heard a lot of people are dying young. Our food plays a big role. We have the opportunity to talk about food. I know we're not nutritionists, we can refer them to if you're not comfortable talking about it, but we know about sugar, we know about acid. Even if you target those two things, and we know about water best. And then our patients are all having a lot of filtered water. Personally, my parents have always had filters. I don't think they filter out fluoride, but it's just filters of all the minerals that, that are the gunk from, from our tap water. Because I know you'll move to different parts of the world, to Australia, different parts, taste the water, it tastes different. They treat it with different chemicals and they do all of that. So there's a lot of patients who are very conscious of that. I've even got an external filter as well. I've got filters here. I haven't dived or gone into it to great detail, but we've just always had filters in the water. People even have filters for their bath water and showers, especially if they've got eczemas, because all those chemicals they think are affecting their eczema. So the more you dive into things, the more you'll find. You might decide, I really love this, I'm going to learn more. Start with the book. Start with and then you can look everything up on Google, on ChatGPT. They can find articles for you. It's crazy what you can find. I didn't have that 2 years ago when I started.
I just had the book and then I started looking.
I'm like, oh, this makes sense to me. Now, we know that certain foods make more acidic and we know that it becomes a pathogen-friendly environment. We need saliva to flow and wash things. If people have less saliva, yes, they're going to have to have more water. Absolutely. But what type of water? There's hydrogen water, there's— I don't even know what type of water. There's a million waters that people buy, machines they buy to, to, to change their water at home. So it's good to— oh, alkaline water as well— to learn what type of water your patients are drinking. You're probably not asking. I didn't for a very long time. The more questions I asked, the more I knew the details. Then the more you can go away and go understand this patient profile now. So for you, I need you to understand that even low-level inflammation that's chronic causes havoc. And it's not just in the mouth and the teeth, it's to all of your body. And some people might be going through those stressful times where it builds even more, and that's when you're going to see it work.
That's where you'll be—
and 6 months ago it was completely different. I've got photos, I've got my period charting. Oh my goodness, what's a ch— Maybe they started going to the gym and they're having more protein shakes and snacking more, and that affects their too. Think about the healthy people. Sometimes their mouth is actually more unhealthy. So have those conversations. They might be having Powerade or whatever else. They didn't realize there was sugar in those drinks, even though they're health conscious. So we can alert them to that. We know our gingival crevicular fluid as well, that seeps into the sulcus.
When we have inflammation, it's got more cytokines.
Even with that increase, you might be probing your— there's lots of liquid, unusually. So your sulcus gets on fire before your gums catch up, and it's before the plaque gets there. We can't see it a lot of the time, but that's what's happening. And that's the connection I want you to know.
So you can look into that.
I've just simplified it a lot. And now I'm just going to tell you that the endemic effect on that too. And I've mentioned a few things. They're just two diseases I mentioned.
