Hi, I'm Natalie Jill, fat loss expert turned lifestyle and high performance coach. Welcome to Listen up the podcast. On this podcast, I do what I do best, taking complicated information that is relevant to us now and breaking it down simply with actionable steps you can implement to level up your life. I also regularly interview some of the most inspiring and courageous men and women on the planet who at their worst, learned how to achieve success greater than anything they ever, ever dreamed possible. Creating everything from nothing. If you are new here, I encourage you to go back and listen from episode one, when this podcast was previously called Leveling up for the Full Transformative Experience. Today on Listen Up, I've got my very good friend Sarah Pendrick, one of my best friends, and it's the second time I've had her on. I'm going to link up the very first episode I did with her as well so you can have more of her backstory. But the reason I wanted to have her on today is she just released such a timely book. It's called Beautifully Brave and it's truly an unconventional guide to owning your own worth and cultivating self love and standing in your power. Now, there's been a lot of talk over the last few years about self love and what that means, but she's got a very different take on it. And I wanted to have her on today because it's interesting where this concept came from and I think it's going to help every female out there. Honestly, like, I feel like every female needs this book and we're going to get into why. So thanks for being here, Sarah.
Thank you for having me. I like your course correction of good friend too. Best friend. I was like, excuse me.
I love it. I love it. So tell me where this came from because ever since I've known you, you've been working on this and it's finally. It's like you gave birth to this. Finally it's out and it's beautiful. I'm so excited. But can you take us back? I know the backstory, but I know listeners right now do not fully what this even came from and why this was such a calling for you to write this.
Yeah.
So I know this isn't necessarily something that everyone can relate to, but we all have our things that we, like, know that we're going to do or maybe those, like, callings that we get, like when we're younger or whether it's I want to be a doctor or I want to be a singer. And when I was younger, I knew that I wanted to Write a book. I didn't know what it was going to be about. And basically at five years old and I might have talked about this when we did your podcast last time I was sexually assaulted and then again in my teens. So my entire life I was this bright, beautiful light and I had things that kept happening. I say to me, but it ended up for me that really dimmed my light, affected my self confidence. So I think that from 5 years old to my 20s, I was just living in survival, trying to figure it out. I went to school to get my master's, all these things. And that's what kind of brought me to writing a book. It's everything that I did to and still do to this day to stay in a real self love.
So a lot of people listening can relate to this idea of childhood trauma. Some people can't, but I think most people have at least heard of it and there's many listeners that have that have dealt with that. Can you just speak a little bit into what does that create in your life when you've dealt with major childhood trauma like you mentioned at age five?
Yeah.
And I also want to say that we've all had trauma. It just depends. Everyone's had trauma and you can't compare it. So maybe my trauma of being sexually assaulted is different for someone else listening. But we have traumas where we've been told that we're not good enough or that stuff going to happen for us and that takes a big toll on our confidence as well. So this book, Beautifully Brave, is actually for everyone you have, you don't have to have experienced deep trauma, childhood trauma, but we all have those things that I'm sure you, Natalie, like that one thing that we remember that someone said to us, like you're never going to have that or people like us. Like that doesn't happen for people like us.
So what happens when we have, when we have these things that were said to us or we have the trauma, no matter what the level of trauma is, what does that create in our lives when that happen?
Yeah.
So it really creates that self doubt and you hear that voice when you're doing things and it creates like a lack of self confidence because those are the people that were your caretakers and when you're younger you don't. You're just looking to be taken care of and you're believing everything that's around you because you don't know any better. So it really affects our upbringing and affects what we feel confident and taking risks and how we really Love ourselves.
So I see two things sort of happen with people that experience that disruption in their confidence. I see, and this is two extreme views, but I see people either get hyper focused on success and do really well in life, or I see people go in this very different path where they don't see success, they fully let themselves go. They don't ever step into that power there. Where do you see that too? And what do you think creates or shifts into that difference? Like, how can one person that went that wrong direction or that, that uncomfortable direction shift back the other way?
Yeah. So I think that it's just a choice if you see.
But we're so, we live in such.
An amazing time right now that you can listen to a podcast like this, that you could read a book like beautifully brave, that you can go on the Internet for free. So I think now more than ever there's more opportunity to be like, hey, this isn't right. It's never too late. Like, you say this so much like, you're never too young, you're never too old. It's literally never too late to make the shift. I have such a gratitude for. I don't know, I can't answer the question as to. Because I went down both paths. I went down the path of just living in survival, having completely, like no confidence in myself. Literally asking every single person, all my friends, like, are you mad at me? Like, is it okay if I do this? Asking everyone else for their opinion and not really honing in on my own opinion. I had years and years of that. And there wasn't a simple shift that I just like took. It was practices. It was practices that are in the book. It's practices that I do to this day. And so I've thought about this before.
I'm like, what has the difference between.
Someone that goes down one way and another person that goes down the other? And I think it's just the opportunity and choices that they make that maybe they didn't know something like this existed, but now that they do, they can really make a choice because they might not feel totally in love with themselves right now, but they could be like, I believe that I can get there and I'm just going to take a chance on myself.
I work so much with women, especially women in their 40s, 50s, in the fat loss space and typically coupled with the fat, when they feel like they need to lose the fat, when they're in that, that area, their confidence is completely shot and they struggle with, how can I put myself first? How can I they view that as a selfish step. Can you help with like, what guidance would you say on the outside looking in at that? Because that's a very real feeling for so many women that I work with.
Yeah, so actually in the book I.
Talk about these myths and one of the myths is that we think self care, putting ourselves first is selfish. And I think that there's something generational with that. Like, I watched myself, my mom, my aunts, and there's this long generation of women that society has told us that society has told us that if we're putting ourselves first, we're speaking up, if we're telling people how we really feel, that we're actually being selfish. And that couldn't be further from the truth. The more that you speak your truth, the more that you don't, people please, the more that you show up for yourself actually makes you a better mother, friend, entrepreneur, employee, whatever it is. So somewhere along the line, all of this got messed up. And I think that we're just living out old generational patterns and things that we've learned and it's time to really step into. The more that you love yourself, the more that you're going to give that energy off to everyone that's around you.
And the happier that you are.
I think everyone can agree with this. The more that you feel confident and happy in yourself, the more that's going to go on to everyone else that you love.
Sarah, what if you don't love yourself though? Because again, this is very real that I encounter women that they fully hate them. I mean, they'll say I hate myself. I don't like I look at like even, okay, look at the events of what happened last year. Mask, the whole the mask situation. I have had so many women say to me, they like, this is. This breaks my heart. They liked wearing a mask because they could hide their face. That makes me so sad that that was even a thought. But this is very real. There's a lot of women that just, they hate themselves.
So here's the thing. Everyone mistakes. Like there's all these definitions of self love that are out there and just like hashtag self love and everyone's practicing self love. And honestly, most people aren't practicing self love.
Can you talk, speak into that? Like, what is the not practicing of it that you're talking about? And then what is the right way?
Yeah, and I do want to go back to what you said. But not practicing self love is when we're people pleasing, when we're doing things over and over that we don't want to do when we're not putting ourselves first. Literally. How would you treat your own child or friend? You have to have a relationship with yourself and start being the person that advocates for you. That's real self love. So if you have all these people posting all these things online, I'm taking a bath, taking a, I'm having a massage, all these things, but they're still people pleasing. They're still like posting and not posting because they're scared of what other people think. I know that it's hard, but you are the only person. You are the last person that you're going to be with the day that you die. You are the most important person in your life. And for everyone that has kids, you're still the most important person because you got to show up for them. And the only way that you can show up for them is showing up for yourself. So it doesn't matter right now if you're one of those people who are like, I did that before. I'm like, oh, I don't have to put any makeup on. Like, I've done that. I've done. Like, I've said all those things that we all say. Every woman has. I think it's especially hard for women because there's so many standards and so many different types and rules for us. And I think we're in a beautiful time where the rules really don't apply. And so if you are someone that's like, yeah, I've literally felt like I hate myself before. There's nothing wrong with you. It's literally listening right now to know there are some things that I can do daily and some conversations and some people that I can get around and some ways that I could ignite that love in myself that I can start today and I promise you it'll start to shift. But you have to take the first step.
I love that. Can you give us like a couple? And obviously I want everyone to get the book because there's so much goodness in here. But if you can give sort of a taste of like, what are some things, like, for the person listening right now that is in that spot, like, I just hate myself. Like, I mean, I just. And I keep bringing it up, but I'm just around women so many times that this is such a conversation. They don't want to look in the mirror. They don't even. They just don't like themselves. What if you were just to say, okay, I want you to do these three things? Like, what would those three things Be.
Yeah. And I'm around thousands of women all the time, too. I have women's events, and I see that. And the thing that I notice is that women don't always know what they want. And you're wondering, what does that have to do with the way that you look? But it has everything to do with the way that you feel about yourself. Because if you don't know what you want, you're not giving yourself the things that you actually need. And when you're feeling joy, then you're able to look outside yourself and look at yourself and look. It doesn't matter what color hair you have or anything or what size you are in that moment, you actually have joy from the inside out. And then that motivates you to be like, oh, I want to go for a walk. I want to take care of my body. It all starts with joy. And so many times we don't know what we want. I have been there before. And what I can say right now for one of the three things is journaling. I know people are like, all right, we always hear that. But if you do that literally for two minutes a day, and I'll give you exactly what to journal. Write down things that you actually love doing. Do you love going for walks? Then make sure that you're going for a walk, even if it's five minutes a day. Bring your family, whatever it is. Figure out your values. And I talk about this in the book. The thing that you can start with is just knowing your values. Everyone has different values. They also change because we're not the same person that we are a year ago, a week ago, five years ago. We're always changing. We got to give ourselves permission as women to always be changing. But knowing your values is so key. And what I mean by that. One of my values is sisterhood. That's why I do my events. That's why I wrote this book. That's why I'm, like, always down at your house. Natalie. Like, I love being with my friends. That lights me up.
Yeah.
A woman is living in her energy. She's able to ignite all this beauty that the outside world sees, no matter.
What you look like.
And also, you're able to look in the mirror and start seeing that joy inside of you and start making healthier decisions.
So I love all these tips. They're so great. And, Sarah, you totally do live by all those. I know that. You know, it's something interesting. I'll also have. I hear women will do. They'll judge other women and they'll look at somebody who they view as attractive or has it all together or whatever it is and they'll say, well, if I was her, if I look like her, I would be that way. What do you want to say to those people that are believing that. That if they looked like somebody else or if they that are always looking at that external? Well, like I don't look like that or so therefore I can't feel like that.
Yeah. So I want to say that I hear you and I have been like you before, like 100%. And what it is, is that's the way we've been taught. I remember growing up, I literally remember my. This. These are the little things that are traumas no matter what you've been through. I remember in sixth grade the boy that I was like thought he was the love of my life. Six grade, six year old or sixth grade little girl. And he picked my friend because he said I was flat. I remember that to this day we are just. We literally have been conditioned with all these things around us telling us like how you're supposed to look. And the thing is energy and joy beats out anything. Energy is everything. It's like when you walk into a room and you feel drawn towards someone. I did this like strip, not a really strip, teeth, but this pole dancing class a month ago and I was feeling a little nervous because I wasn't at the gym as much. I was traveling and then these women that were wearing these sports bras and short shorts and I'll say they wouldn't be the typical on your magazine what everyone thinks you're supposed to look like. And they got and were owning themselves and dancing on that pole and they literally looked like supermodels to me. Like their confidence was so beautiful. And then we talked after and they're like, I just started loving myself. I just lost 10 pounds. Like I started saying no to things that I didn't want to do anymore. And so it starts with just giving yourself that permission to actually feel joy and know what you want and starting from the inside out. And I just think that I just know that energy is number one and it's the first step for everything.
I want to add something to this. Now clearly I'm not the author of this book, so I want. But I want to throw something out and I'm curious your take on this. So a lot of times I feel it's important for women to act as if, like act as if you're becoming the person that you know that you can be. Or that you're hoping to become and then working backwards on there. And that's a lot of what you just spoke into. But another thing I wanted to add, there is sometimes to me when I would feel jealous of somebody and it's just a very real human emotion to have jealousy. Like, I see a woman who super attractive and I think they have it all together. What typically changes my opinion and takes me off the jealousy is to learn their story. And this is so interesting, but we tend to judge people from a magazine image. Like they've got this perfect life, if I was that. But when you can learn their actual story, understand that they too have hardships, that they too are human. When you can unravel that, to me, that knocks away that jealousy feeling because you realize that we all are connected, we all are human, and we've all had those struggles. And I'm curious about when you were researching for your book or doing that, if anything played into those two things.
Yeah, definitely. Because, I mean, Natalie, you know me and I had a huge judgment conversation with myself. I would get judged all the time by the way that I looked. And if you saw me and went to my Instagram, I might be one of those people that you think has a perfect life. Yet I have overcome physical and emotional abuse. I have been sexually assaulted, I've been raped, and I have. I had nothing but the per. Like the opposite of what the perfect life is. So I love that you said that. I agree with you that no one has a perfect life. And I also think that stop focusing on other people and focus on yourself. And that's when the shift's really going to change. When I, because I was so hyper focused, focused as a little girl, because I was always told, no, you shouldn't do that or you should do this. So I was always looking for the standard. Like Cindy in my kindergarten class always does this. So I should be like her. She has this color hair, so I should have this color hair. We've just literally been taught as a society to compare. And the thing is, when you just catch yourself and shift and say, I'm not going to focus on this person, I'm going to focus on myself. Even if you do it as an experiment for two weeks, like, hey, every time you're about to compare or look at someone else or insult yourself, like, let me just test this out and see what it's like to just focus and fill myself up for two weeks and just see the changes that happen. You can do anything for two weeks.
So help me through this conversation that I know is going in the heads of people listening right now there I'm. Because I can hear them saying, but how? But I will feel selfish. But how? And I know you just spoke into. It's actually the opposite of selfish. Can you help me with some tactical things? Like the person that's having that conversation, but how that makes me selfish. But how I've got a husband, I've got kids, I've got this, I've got that. They have all these things that they feel they can't do that. What does it actually mean to put yourself first? That's not selfish.
So. And I'm not just plugging this. Honestly, read the book because it's literally a roadmap. And I've also made it to where that you can be the busiest person on the planet and put it in. And you can also get your family involved. And that's why I'm saying if you just do the value thing, because right now I want to know, does everyone that's listening, like, I wish we could talk to them. Do you actually know your values? Or maybe you knew them last year, but it's been a crazy year and they've definitely changed. Yeah, my values has changed from the last year. There are things that I used to care about that I do not care about anymore. So take an inventory right now if that's the only thing that you do of what are your values and how you can add those into your day. Get your husband involved, get your employees involved, get your kids involved. What an example to have them thinking about what brings them joy and being like, oh, today I didn't go for my walk yet. And that actually fills me up. That's a value for me. So just one thing that you take away from right now is the values. And then also another thing is there's this huge. A little not really off topic. There's this huge, like. And I know you'll agree with me, there's this huge love yourself the way that you are. And I talk about this in the book. I think that's a myth. I think that you get to practice being acceptance of how things are, but knowing that you're worthy to start taking those steps to improve it. And it's just tiny little steps, like two minutes a day.
So what's cool about this book? And everyone got to get this book. It's called Beautifully Brave. But what is so cool is I've been. I've got it from her book launch about a week ago, and then on Amazon Just came too. So I've got two of them now. I'm excited. It's such a great gift to yourself and others, but because what I notice is like, it's just been around me for the last few days and every time I just open it, I can open to any page. Like, you can honestly start anywhere. I know you have a method to this, but any page you open to there is something good there. So just like for instance, I just opened a page right now and it says, I love myself. When I refuse to sell myself short for anyone else's approval, I see my value, I know my worth and declare my evolution. Tons of affirmations in here. Can you speak into affirmations and why these are so important to you and why you shared so heavily about affirmations in your book?
Yeah.
And after each chapter, there's just like, if you're feeling self doubt, you can go to this chapter and it gives you all those tangible things. And I want to get to your tangible things and answer this. The value thing, I know I keep talking about it, but it's so important. Know what you want and add your values to your day.
Also, every day in the morning, set.
An intention for your day, because that's really going to bring that energy and that frequency into your day. And if anything, even if you do.
This one as a woman especially, start.
Saying no to things that you don't want to do. Practice that and you will literally start. It's scientific. It's in your body that your body like, wow, she's showing up.
For me, your body will feel safe, empowered. It's so crazy what it does for.
Us inside when we say yes, when we mean no.
Was it hard for you to start saying no?
A hundred percent.
And this is what, this is what you can do. Because you know, any other woman that.
You talk to definitely struggles with this or has. So if you can have like a buddy or an accountability partner join you in this where you guys can give each other permission. Like, if I'm like, Natalie, let's join up together. If there's anything that I don't want to do, do I have your permission to start telling you, like, hey, this doesn't feel aligned or I don't have energy for that and hold the space for me back. Find someone in your family or friends to practice this with.
It's so hard.
But I am telling you, you will feel the energetic release, the release of.
Old stories, the release that we have.
Trapped in our body, the old energy. The body keeps the score Your body is literally keeping score of how you abandon yourself. So when you start taking those little.
Things like saying no when you mean no, you're setting example for others and you're literally releasing all of these old stories that we've been carrying as women.
You know, it's so funny. I just got one of those rings. I don't know if you've heard of it, this is not a plug for the ring, but I bought one of those rings that tracks your sleep and your. Your readiness. Like how your. All the things about your. And what's interesting is I noticed that like this weekend for instance, was filled with stuff that was not my first choice. And I did not say no. I was like, gotta do it. Just the people pleaser on me. And the ring notifications on my phone, like kept showing, like lack of sleep, like lack of readiness. And it was interesting that that changed things for me. Like just so sometimes we're in denial, I believe, like denial of like, oh no, I shouldn't say no, it's okay. But like it does affect our health. It does. When you say yes to things you don't want, you get stressed, you get anxiety, you're not taking care of yourself, you're not putting your health first. All those things show up that way. And then you have to ask yourself, I would imagine like, whose life are you living for? Are you living for your own? Are you living to please somebody else's?
Exactly. And honestly, a lot of like regret and that self hatred comes from abandoning yourself. So what are the ways that you abandon yourself right now and saying yes and people pleasing and just that. Just the fact that you said with. You're tracking that on your app. That's your health, that's your energy. There's a whole chapter in my book about the science of happiness and that literally affects our health when we do that. And that's what really creates the self hatred because it's like I don't even have my own back, so how do I expect anyone else to.
This is so good. I also love. You have these love notes to yourself throughout. Like, I love myself when I take time to heal. So good. I love myself when I listen to regrets and work to change my actions for the better. That's good because I think instead of going into self beat up, you're teaching a different perspective that you learn from it.
Yeah.
And you won't do it again. So, so many times.
Here's the thing.
When we run away from something, even when it's really small, that's Actually, when it becomes a fear, that's actually when it becomes something that's so, like, actually energetically, like when you feel so fearful of something, you can feel it in your body. So when we're running away from things, we're building more fear. So it's really just like, I know it's hard, accept it. Hey, I messed up. I messed up. What can I do differently? But so many times, and I've done it too. I don't want to admit that I messed up. I just want to pretend that it didn't happen. I want to move on. And you're just building more fear in your body of taking chances of messing up. And then you're just staying stuck and not going for your dreams, which leads to the self betrayal, the self beat up, the self hatred, all of those things. And the reason, to answer your question from before that I put affirmations in here is because whatever you got to do to get your body feeling good, do it. Affirmations work for some people. Sometimes they don't. But the point is getting your body in joy. Like every day before I go to bed, Josh and I, my husband Natalie, you obviously know Josh, we sit and we go, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. And it can't help but make you smile. So then it can attract more to you and you can really feel that joy in your body.
That's so good. What about. And I apologize, I've not read the whole book yet. I've skimmed through and I've loved so much that I've looked at. But do you talk about anything about the people that are in your life?
Yes.
Okay, can you, can you speak into that? Because that's another big thing that comes up with women, is that they feel like they don't have a support system or they feel like there's just too much negativity in their life.
Yeah.
So here my journey is much about when I just packed up and left Nashville, when everyone thought I was crazy. They're like, you're going to move to la. Like, you're going to be like, no one's going to know who you are. You're insane. You're leaving your master's program. So I moved to la and there was a good year that I was surrounded by negativity and people that weren't my people. And that's also where I started develop the practices that are in this book. And after I just kept being like, I know that my people are going to be around me. I know that I can't keep going to these dinners and having these same conversations that are so negative and make me miserable. And the minute that I started doing small steps to change that, people that spoke my language started showing up. And I think another thing, especially with people, like, there's people in our life that we love, and they didn't do anything wrong. We just aren't on the same frequency. We just don't speak the same language. And that's okay to outgrow people. It's also okay. And this is something that has been so empowering for those people. Like family that I love, but we just don't think the same. We don't want the same things. I tell them what I'm up to, and I'm like, you're welcome to hear more and be a part of it. And I just set things up before I go and visit them and set my expectations and my standards and let them know so that when I get there, it's not this. Maybe it'll work out. Maybe they won't be annoying. Like, maybe they won't be talking about.
Wait, I want to unpack that a little bit more because that's a. So I want to make sure I understand this, because this is huge. So you're. So let's say you're going to the dreaded family function because, you know, you fight with your sister, you fight with your mom, or you fight whatever it is. Like the politics comes up or whatever it is.
Yeah.
How do you, like, tell me a real life example. Like, how do you. What is that conversation before you go? How does that happen? So you avoid. Because I know that's very real. People have anxiety before those things, thinking there's going to be an argument or a fight or whatever it is.
Yeah.
So for the last couple of years, especially my mom, I love my mom, but she comes from the generation of, you put everyone first and I'm last. And she had so many worthiness conversations and so many conversations about the way she looks and so many things that I carried with me that I just didn't want to have be my store anymore. So I knew that was still inside me and what I was working on. So when I was around her, when she would act like that, it would trigger me so much. And I'm like, am I ever going to get past this? Like, I want to enjoy my time with my mom. And so I just slowly started sharing the work that I was doing. Not an aggressive way telling her, like, having boundaries, like, hey, I'm coming to stay with you for Five days. I'm going to stay in a hotel this amount of the time. This is my intention for our visit. This is what I would love to experience with you. I just started doing that rather than just going and just being like, oh my gosh, when is she going to annoy me? And really drawing that to happen. And now I just went to a family wedding a couple weeks ago and I had the best time with my family. I didn't even notice the things that would usually bother me because I was able to do my own self work. And now they're interested in what I'm doing because I'm the example of that.
Oh, that's so good. And that, that goes back to your daily intention idea.
You.
It's. You more than do intentions as a daily thing. You do that as an event thing, as a weekly thing, as a life thing. It's a constant. And I bring that down to you get what you expect. So if you expect there's going to be chaos, that would happen. But if you create the intention, you're going to get more of that.
Yeah. Or if you're like, you know, trying to ignore something that you know is going to happen. I'm going to see my family. Usually my dad does this or cousin does this, but I'm just gonna hope that they don't. It's like, really give yourself that gift of priming yourself to go, setting what you expect, letting yourself know, like, hey, if this happens, I'm gonna be leaving.
Okay. All right. I want every female to go get this book. Not just one, get three. Literally get three. Because you're gonna want one for you. You're gonna want to give one as a gift, and you're gonna want one on your coffee table. I already know, like, so it's. It's great. It's called Beautifully Brave. You can find it anywhere. Books are sold. Your local bookstore, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, all the places. Sarah, where is a link you want people to get directed to where they can have easy access to find the book at all?
Yeah, they can go to beautifullybravebook.com and just pick their favorite bookstore.
And I keep saying it's for every female, but who do you. Who specifically did you write this for? Who do you want the person listening right now that is like, like, you got to go get this. Go run out and get it. Who is that person?
Honestly, I wrote this to meet every woman where they're at. There's something in there for everyone. It's for the woman that you spoke of that does feel that like self betrayal coming up and regret. I also wrote it for a woman that's already in their self love journey because it doesn't stop. And that's the thing that people make that mistake. They're like, oh, I'm good, I'm confident. I love myself. But your relationship to yourself is number one and it always gets to deepen. So it's all in the book. And it's also a roadmap to meet you where you're at.
