Natalie Jill shares what to eat before and after workouts. She recommends whole foods, whey protein, fruit, and caffeine to boost energy and recovery.
Hi, guys. Natalie, Jill here. Let's talk about pre workout. What can you do pre workout to help fuel your workout and give you a little extra energy? Now, I get a lot of questions about supplements and I want to say first and foremost, I'm a fan of real natural whole foods whenever possible. And if you use supplements, that is in addition to your diet to help with what you're lacking or what you might want to add, but you don't have to use supplements, you can get pretty much everything from whole foods. There are a few things that I personally do add to my diet, especially pre workout, and that's what I want to share with you. Now, I'm a huge fan of eating fats. I love eating fats in my diet. But the one time that I do not have fats is right before I work out and right after. And the reason is fats will slow everything down. And right before my workout and right after my workout, I want to get all of that protein and those good nutrients into my muscles quickly and I don't want to slow down the digestion. So what I do pre workout is I always have a piece of fruit. So I've got a couple examples. I'll have an orange, an apple or a peach because I want that fructose for my workout. That's also going to help with that muscle development and that energy, I want that. And I'm also always adding some whey. And the reason I choose whey protein powder is because that is the most fast digesting, fast absorbing protein powder that you can have. So you're getting the best part of protein from the whey. It's quick to digest, quick to absorb, and it's ideal pre and post workout. So if you use protein powders, you can use really anything, but you want to pay attention to what is going to get in your system quicker. And whey would be that. Other protein powders, like a casein would be a lot slower digesting. So would egg protein and so would a blend of proteins. It's going to be slower to digest. And then a meal replacement would not be ideal because you're getting a lot of calories, a lot of kinds of protein, plus you're getting fat in that which will slow down that digestion. So pre workout, ideally I always do a scoop of whey mixed with water or some coconut water. And I always do a piece of fruit, no fat. Now, for those of you that say, gosh, I want that extra energy, what can I add? I am personally a fan of caffeine Now I know some of you were saying caffeine's not good. I don't like caffeine. It's your preference. You can argue it really both ways. I am a fan of caffeine personally. It does help to slightly speed up your metabolism, it does help increase your focus and it will help you focus and energize through those workouts. So I am a fan of caffeine pre workout. So there are a couple things I choose to do. Sometimes I will have literally just a green tea and that's enough for me dropping that in hot water. Have my caffeine, have my pre workout which is my whey protein and a piece of fruit. Or I will use some natural supplements. This is one that I recently started using a lot of. It's an E plus shot and the reason I like it is it's literally just caffeine and B vitamins. Super easy. I have one of these. There's no crash. I do that pre workout. Fuels me through my workout. I love it. After my workout I typically have some more whey and another piece of fruit and I'm good to go. So there you go. That's what I recommend and do personally pre and post workout.
