DNA Testing: Results with 23 & Me

Dr. Adam Perlman and his wife Larisse use a 23andMe kit to test their DNA for ancestry and health risks. They walk through the saliva collection process, explain that genetic predisposition isn't destiny, and plan to consult a doctor if anything concerning shows up.
Hey, I'm Dr. Adam Pearlman here with my wife Larisse. We're gonna try something that's becoming more and more popular. So these home genetic test kits we're gonna use probably one of the more well known, if not the Most well known company 23andMe certainly to assess any health risks as well as sort of curiosity in general. You know, that's why probably most people, I would imagine, use these kind of kits. I think what's important to be aware of is that just because you have a genetic predisposition or a particular risk or a trait, or you have a carrier status as it relates to certain genes, doesn't mean that you're necessarily obviously going to develop a particular condition. And so if anything comes back that's concerning, we'll discuss that with our physician and if need be, get actual genetic counseling. I'm curious about my ancestry. I certainly want to understand if I do have any particular genetic risks that I should be aware of and that are sort of actionable, that I can do something about. That kind of information would be interesting to me and you know, may change how I do things, may change some of the choices I make. We're gonna go for it. So this is our saliva collection kit. Oh, this is the fluid they were talking about. This is the DNA stabilizer. So no food or drink for at least 30 minutes. We've both done that spit to fill the line. Okay, let's show the camera that there is a 2 fill. I don't want to spit on camera. Erase it. This is when people shut the camera off. Definitely right. At the end of the day, we can't control what genes we have, but we can potentially influence our genes, right? Ideally in positive ways. We can certainly influence them in negative ways as well. And so, you know, with awareness comes choice. So I'm hoping that we gain some actionable knowledge here that can help us to live a more healthy life. You're full? I'm full. Okay. Full on that DNA stabilizer. Oh, gross. Alright, so I put my tube in here. It's coated. I've sealed the bag. We're gonna put it in the mail and a few weeks from now we'll get our report and we'll see what it show it.
