How Job Seekers Get Burnt by Career Coaches: False Promises and Unfulfilled Expectations

Michelle Perchuk breaks down how career coaches overpromise and underdeliver, then walks through what actually works: resume writing, interview prep, networking, and negotiating offers. She explains her own coaching approach and how to get real help with your job search.
Good afternoon, everyone. We're just going to give a few more minutes to people to come into the webinar. We had over 60 registrations, so I'm very puzzled as to why not enough people are on right now. I'm going to start just in a few minutes. But I would like to set up this call to share with everyone. Why did I choose to do this call now? Why did I choose to speak on this topic? The reason for that is, is because every day I speak to someone that was burned by another coach, that was burned by another coaching program, that was burned by some kind of a course that they did. And I think that that's not cool. And the reason why I decided to put together this entire webinar is so that I could address this problem and I could offer a solution. So let's get into the presentation right now. I'm going to share my screen.
Okay.
So the topic of this webinar today, everyone, is how job seekers get burned by other career coaches. And most importantly, the. The false promises and the unfulfilled expectations that people are left with after they invest thousands of dollars. So, like I mentioned earlier, every day I conduct consultations, every day, more and more. So now I hear of people investing thousands of dollars. I mean, one price point, I literally fell out of my chair. 25,000 to work with a coach for one year, and a dream job promised in the end. And once again, they were dropped like a hot potato when they did not look like the person that would get the outcome, the CEO job or the CFO job. So I know that this is a problem. I know there are a lot of career coaches at their programs, courses, incubators, whatever, and some of them are good. But the reason why I chose to do. To do this particular webinar today is because many people are coming to me saying, help me. I did not get the results that I wanted, and I'm still in need of a job. I still need to feed my family. I am still unappreciated and exhausted, and I'm working full time and I'm searching the job boards and I'm trying to network on LinkedIn and it's still not working. So let's go step by step about what other coaches are promising and what are you actually getting. Okay, so many coaches are promising guaranteed interviews with perfect resume templates.
Okay?
They give you a template, you do the resume according to their template, and you're supposed to get amazing interviews. The reality is, is those templates are generic. Everyone can come up with A template. It's not an one size fits all, and they do not highlight individual strengths. And what do you think hiring managers and recruiters don't know when you use the template to make your resume look cool? So the pitfall in doing that and working with coaches that promise you this perfect resume is that you're wasting time altering your resume to meet the needs of the job description. And overall, this method just does not work. It's a waste of time to have a template, your resume has to be individual. It's a waste of time to work with a generic template. You know, I've heard people hiring resume writers that charge hundreds of dollars and you're supposed to have this cool new resume. But the most important thing is there is a way to highlight things on your resume. So at mtv, I'm just trying to figure out why it's not showing properly. At mtv, we custom write all of your resumes. Custom write it. I do this with you one on one, okay? We reverse engineer the resume to meet your dream job, but that's after we identify your dream job. Our resumes, and this is a fact, get a 50% increase in interview requests.
Okay?
We even had a few clients that went back and applied for jobs with the new resume that we did with their original resume that was templated by another resume writer. They didn't. They got rejected. They got the auto response. With the resume that I wrote with my client, they got called for an interview.
Okay?
And if there are certain skills that are missing from your interview, we perform a skill audit that is tied directly to your dream job and we make recommendations of what skills you need to acquire and how can you upskill so that you look as though you're the perfect candidate for this job that you're applying.
Okay?
Other coaches claim to teach interview techniques that are going to get you the job. I'm sorry, I'm on the wrong slide. Okay? Other coaches claim that they're going to teach you effective interview techniques.
Okay?
Their promise is a one size fits all scripts for all interviews across all professions. Now, listen, people in health care do not follow the same script for people in finance or people in technology. So that is an over promise. The real, the reality is if you go with these canned responses, you will look rigid, unnatural, and you probably will not be chosen to go to round two because those answers will not be authentic. They're not going to show that you're an expert and that you can solve their problem.
Okay?
So the pitfall in just learning how to interview like a Rock star is you are not prepared to answer the diverse questions that hiring manager are asked. Hiring managers are asking today. HR people are very sophisticated in asking you questions about if you're a culture fit, about your leadership style, how do you deal with crisis, how do you deal with challenges with other team members? So there's a slew of questions that are asked. And if you prepare these rigid responses that other coaches are teaching you, you're not going to go over to the next round. They're not going to see you as the perfect candidate because your answers are going to be canned. So what do we do at MTV Coaching? Let's just give it a minute to populate. I don't know why it's not populating properly. So at MTV Coaching, we help you craft answers to the most frequently asked questions in advance. We make sure you're prepared, we practice with you. We put together scripts that match your industry, your role, and the dream job that you aspire to get. And depending on what engagement you choose to work with me, I will even analyze your interview recordings and help you improve on the next one. So we approach this interview problem as not as a one size fits all. Everyone is individual. All the work that we do here at MTV Coaching is individually tailored to your dream job, not to everybody's dream job. Okay? Everybody is different. Everyone has a different personality. Everybody is a different type of a communicator. And if you're an introvert, I cannot expect you to be an extrovert at an interview. We work with what we. We work with you. We meet you where you're at, we work with what we have and we show you ways to improve. We also support you through this journey. This is not an easy journey.
Okay?
So we approach interviews in a very customized way. The promise that other coaches make is they show you how to highlight your subject matter expertise. So their promise is they're going to give you quick tricks to appear as an industry expert. The reality is, is quick tricks are that, and I don't believe in them, they come across as superficial, that you copied it from somebody else's resume or someone else's LinkedIn profile or from an article you read.
Okay?
And even though in the age of Chad GPT, you know, you have artificial intelligence creating your resumes, when other people write your resumes, that becomes apparent. And actually recruiters and hiring managers look at that under scrutiny. So I do not recommend doing that. And resume writers and other coaches, they have these automated services. They have ChatGPT writing your resumes and then what happens is you're not genuine. You can't talk to your resume during the interview because that it's not written in your natural language. So when at mtv, we craft the resumes with you, we have you do the heavy lifting. So. So that you are familiar with every single thing that you did in a job, that it's in your natural language so that you're not going to stumble during an interview, that you're going to appear confident and you're going to be able to talk to that experience.
Okay.
We also take apart your experience and we craft scenarios from your experience that will be directly connected to, to the job that you're applying to. And it's going to show the employer that you can solve the problem.
Okay?
Remember, employers hire you to solve a problem, not because you need a job. We even prepare you to answer a question during an interview or during a networking call if it's identified that you have a certain skill missing. You know, when there's. During an interview for managers, oh, you know what? We're looking for people that have five years of hiring experience or five years of leadership experience, and you only have three. That's it, game over. You're out of the ranking. We show you how to come back from that and say, listen, even though I only have three years, but those were filled with challenges that I overcame, so those three years felt like 30. And I'm confident that I could help you. I can't imagine that the two extra years would make me more qualified. Okay, but you need to have confidence to speak like that. And that's what this next slide is about. Other coaches make a promise to you that you will have infants, you will have instant confidence. They're going to give you these confidence boosters and tactics to brag about your achievements.
Okay?
When you're bragging and talking about yourself, you're not listening. One of the most important things that we advocate is during interviews, you have to show that you're a good listener. So having these quick confidence boosters and tactics are not going to work out. You're not applying for a fraternity.
Okay.
You're applying for your dream job. So the reality is, is the temporary fixes that don't address underlining issues. And job seekers need to remember, member their lines like they're auditioning. This feels cold and does not lead to the next round. If a hiring manager feels that you're not authentic, that your conversation is not a dialogue, that it's more like you're performing for them, it's over. You're not going to be a good culture fit. An interview has to be a two way street. They're interviewing you as well as you're interviewing them. So the problem is that even though you were successful before in your other role, that's not a guarantee that you're going to perform in your dream job. So you need to be able to talk about it and maneuver in real time. Because just because you had success in your past job, let's say Morgan Stanley, it doesn't mean that you're going to be a rock star at Goldman Sachs. Every company has their own culture, has their own KPIs, has their own rules. So you need to be able to, with confidence, kind of dance in the moment, especially during the interview. So at MTV coaching, we do not give you fast tricks, okay? We show you how you can stop performing at interviews, but instead use your confidence level and give you questions to ask. When you're asking questions and you're asking the right questions, you are seen as a problem solver and you get invited to the next round. If you go look at some of my testimonials on YouTube, there's one former client that said that at his dream job interview, which he actually wind up getting, he has never spoken so little and yet he concentrated on asking the right questions. And that's the job that he got. He was amazed that at an interview that he spent 30% talking, he got the job before he used to spend 100% talking. If you're talking, you're not listening. If you're talking, you're performing. And if you're performing, you're showing off. You're not asking them questions, you're not showing them that you care about what's going on with them and that shows to them that you're only out for yourself.
Okay?
So confidence is a double edged sword. And we show you how to be confident, but yet not overly confident and obnoxious. Other coaches claim that they're going to create a professional story for you that's going to get you hired, okay? And they will give you compelling narratives that guarantee job offers, okay? The reality is, is that if your narrative or your bio is canned, if it looks cheesy, it doesn't have passion, purpose, it doesn't talk about the impact that you want to create in the world. It's just boring words. Anybody could come up with a great bio from ChatGPT today. Not a big deal. And that's what probably most coaches are doing.
Okay?
The problem with that is, is that if you Fail to align your personal story with the company values, you're not going to get the job because it's one way you're performing for them. You think you need to come up with the perfect story. You spend time on chat chad GPT to craft it, or you're copying somebody else's work and what happens is it's not you and you miss the opportunity.
Okay?
So at MTV Coaching, we have a special formula we use. When you are asked the question, tell me about yourself, the formula that we have has gotten people jobs. I really underline that. If you don't believe me, you could call some of my references on LinkedIn. But it is true. This special formula is called the three chapters of My Life.
Okay?
And we show you how to use it to craft your summary on your resume, to craft your bio to answer the question of tell me about yourself in an interview. The bio you will create with us is going to be interesting, to the point, easy to understand, and they will remember you forever.
Okay?
There is a lot of reflection when I craft the three chapters of your life with you. When I become your coach, there is a lot of reflection and not a lot of insights. This is imperative for people that have gaps in their resume. This is imperative for people that have been unemployed for more than three months. Because if you are asked, tell me about yourself, there will be a point where you have to mention that you're not employed. And most people get all choked up about that. I show you ways on how to cover that up professionally. I don't mean to lie, just not draw attention to it. Because the truth of the matter is, most people sabotage their own success on the interview. You tell them things that they don't need to know. Remember, they will only know what you tell them. So why don't you choose to tell them your amazing stories and all the stuff why you're amazing versus why you were laid off. But most people get all choked up about that. And it's very important that you build this muscle. I actually reviewed this with a client a couple of days ago who was laid off. And we crafted this amazing story, and we kind of made the fact that she was laid off due to a reorg. Boom. End the story. Now let's talk about the impact you want to create in the future. Let's talk about how it could solve your problems. Mr. Merrill Lynch.
Okay?
So when I become your coach, I'm going to show you a different perspective. You don't need to volunteer everything in your background, especially the bad news stuff, okay? So other coaches will claim that they're going to teach you the latest in networking techniques, okay? They're going to teach you cutting edge strategies for Instant connections on LinkedIn, how to trick the algorithm, how to get more eyeballs on you. Specifically how you're going to get more jobs because you're going to have an open to work frame, okay? And the reality is, is that all of those approaches are outdated and gimmicky. They feel inauthentic.
Okay?
It's like posting more on LinkedIn is going to get your engagement up, but in reality it doesn't. And what happens is, is that you use these networking techniques and you keep reaching out to people at your dream companies and they're not accepting your connections.
Okay?
So the problem with this networking techniques that many coaches say, oh, I've trigged the algorithm, you know, I know how you could get more eyeballs on your post. You have to post every day, you have to repost, you have to do this, you have to do that. The problem is, is that that is not genuine. You're looking to trick the algorithm, you're not building long term relationships and you're focusing on the math of it. Now listen, I'm not against math. There are many equations that I use in my coaching. But if you're working to trick the algorithm and you think you're going to trick it and get your dream job, you're definitely barking up the wrong tree.
Okay?
So the idea is not to trick the algorithm. The reason LinkedIn was invented and I've been an early user since 2006, if I was looking to trig the algorithm, I would have 300,000 connections right now. I only have 13,000 in my entire career. You know why? Because all those people know me. What's the value of having thousands of friends when not a single one picks up the phone when you need something? Okay, so you don't need to trick an algorithm. What you need to do is reach out to people that have problems that you can solve and start authentic conversations.
Okay?
So at mtv that is exactly what we teach you. Sorry, I lost the slide here. Okay, at mtv, we have a formula that works, okay? We show you how to activate your existing contacts, we show you how to develop new ones. We show you how to reach out to strangers. We help you to build those scripts so they don't come across cheesy, so people do not think that you are trying to sell them something. We show you ways to say things authentically. Having done research, we help you do some research. If need be. But at the end of the day, we show you ways how to reach out to a complete stranger and for them to respond to you. Not because you're saying the coolest buzzwords, but because you happen to know somebody that they know that you went to school with, okay? It's all about starting authentic conversations and also following up. You know, many people get really upset if they send out an invitation to somebody and they don't respond or they send a message and they don't respond. Well, guess what? They don't wake up in the morning because they want to reach out to Mark, okay? They have other things to do. Families, work responsibilities. Many high level executives check their LinkedIn only in the evenings or once a week, depending on how busy they are. So we cannot be egotistical and think that oh, you know, what is the priority for them. They have to respond to my by to my InMail in two business days. Doesn't work like that.
Okay?
So the people that you want are not responding to you. Guess what, you go get more people as long as you stay authentic, okay? So this type of activity, the networking, it takes finesse, it takes some practice. And this is where MTV hold your hand, provide you with the support. We have a weekly Q and A call that you could come and ask any question that you want. You need to stay motivated during this process of networking with complete strangers. You feel like a little bit down because some people didn't respond to you. That's okay, come and talk to us, okay? Not everything goes according to your plan. So you need to kind of surrender, accept the process and I promise you everything will be okay in the end. Many other coaches tell you that there is a special way to do follow ups to interviews and they provide you with templates that secure next round interviews. Let me tell you this, I am a former recruiter. I work from Manpower, Agilon, world renowned recruiting companies. I had my own recruiting company for eight years in New York City working with Wall street clients. There is, I have never seen an email that went to the hiring manager after the interview that had improved the chances of that person getting the job. I don't care if you promise the hiring manager a million dollars, they're not going to hire you. There's nothing that you can say in that follow up email that's going to improve your chances of getting a job except one thing, and I have perfected that. So. So the reality is, is that other coaches give you a generic template to use when you're following up on interviews. It's generic, it fails to stand out, and basically just says thank you for your time, end of story. The problem with that is, is that you miss an opportunity to, to demonstrate that you're generally genuinely interested in the opportunity and you're not using that follow up email to highlight more things about you.
Okay?
So at MTV coaching, I don't know why my slideshow is messed up a little bit. At MTV coaching, my expertise, 20, 25 years in the industry, I have perfected a method that I tried first with my tech clients. I have plenty of people that got jobs at Meta, Amazon, Google and so forth. Okay? So we started perfecting this, we started actually testing it on them, this method that was developed for them and it was perfected for them, okay? So these top notch firms, technology firms, the interview in cycles and depending on each cycle that you pass the 30, the 30 minute interview, depending on how you do, you get passed on to the next round. So sending a thank you every time to the recruiter that lined you up for that interview is useless. So what have, what can you do? What special template can you use that's going to improve your chances of getting called for that second round in interviews? That's going to increase your chances. It's not saying a special thank you.
Okay.
There's a formula that I invented. It's a method, okay? It's basically just to give you a little bit more info about it. It's when you start working with me, we define some stars, situation, task action, steps, results, and we craft those, we curate those specifically to business problems that you solved. So as you follow up with a hiring manager or with the recruiter that got you in an internal recruiter, as you follow up, you can say something that's going to incorporate a situation that you recalled after you had the interview and you could request for the recruiter to send it over to the hiring manager. Because the hiring manager talks to five to 10 people for a job, they're not going to remember everybody. They're going to get the canned thank you from everybody, okay? But you're going to look different because of what we teach you at mtv. Other coaching companies provide you scripts to use when you're negotiating your offer.
Okay?
They give you these cheesy canned scripts that are supposed to give you confidence or some wordsmithing or whatever it is to get higher base salaries and to twist arms to get bonuses, okay? The reality is that during the offer negotiation, this may be looked at as an aggressive way of negotiating an offer. I mean, there's Negotiating and then there's being arrogant about it.
Okay?
So we don't want a company that's about to hire you to look at you as an aggressive fascist or trying to just get a base salary and a sign on bonus because it's going to make you feel good, okay? It may alienate an employer. It may show them that, you know, you're not the kind person or the kind leader that you, that you thought that they thought that you were. Now I know that many of you think that, oh, if I'm going to be very aggressive during the offer negotiation, I'm going to show that I'm a strong leader.
Okay?
That's a fallacy. Honestly, if you push it too far, you may endanger of getting the offer anyway. I've seen offers, you know, taken back all the time. So we don't want to do that. So when you approach the offer negotiation with some kind of a script or some kind of a trick, what you're doing is you're neglecting to consider the full compensation package or the long term career growth and you create an image of yourself as someone that only cares about the bottom dollar.
Okay?
You do not want to do that. Especially I work with middle management to C suite executives and you do not want to have this image of yourself walking in the door.
Okay?
So this is a very important part of the job seeking process that we give you a lot of support in. And I mean a lot. I have, I have had clients that, you know, at 8:00 clock at night, I'm coaching them on how to negotiate the best offer for themselves.
Okay?
So at MTV we, I do all of this work, provide you extensive support through the stressful period of offer negotiation. You may get several offers and you need help in hedging one offer against the other so that you could maximize the best possible comp package for yourself. There are really sophisticated ways that I have developed over the years that will help you maneuver in any single situation.
Okay?
I had a slew of people, specifically people in marketing and finance that I have coached them through this very intricate moment to get them the best possible package and to actually push the employer a little further along as maybe they're stalling or maybe it's taking them an extra day to get you an offer in writing.
Okay?
It's very nerve wracking because you're afraid you're going to lose one job and that job is really not your dream job and your dream job is not moving along because somebody's on vacation. So what do you Say, who's going to support you in writing this email? A spouse? A friend? No, those people care about you, but they don't have the expertise to hold your hand through the stressful moment. And you know what? If you come apart during this moment, they're not going to make you an offer at all. So the value of MTV holding your hand through this entire process, specifically when you're already, in the end, when you have three opportunities, okay, and you're going to. You think you're going to take the first one, well, that's a mistake. So it's important to have the support of an expert, someone that has seen this many, many, many millions of times in their. Not millions, hundreds of thousands in her career. Okay, so in conclusion, let me go to the next slide. In conclusion, many career coaches promise you quick fixes and guaranteed results. Job seekers are desperate. They're wasting a lot of time on job boards talking to recruiters and not getting the results that they want. So job seekers often fall as prey. They invest time, money into strategies that don't deliver. And honestly, at the end of the day, and I talk to these people every day, they are left holding the bag. Okay, that is not cool. If you're going to take on somebody, you're taking somebody on to coach them in their career. You're taking on a life, you're taking on their kids, their spouse, their mortgage. You become accountable for them. You're not just dealing with just an entity. You're dealing with a person. You cannot drop them like a hot potato. There are people that need a little bit more help in the interview or in the resume preparation or in the networking. You need to be able to be agile. You cannot be rigid and offer one solution to everybody. And if this, well, this program works for everybody, why isn't it working for you? There must be something wrong with you. Well, how about there's something wrong with your program if it's not meeting the needs of your clients and sometimes majority. If it works for majority and it doesn't work for the minority, maybe there you need to go back and redo your program. Okay, so at mtv, we do things very differently. At mtv, we understand that success in job hunting requires a personalized approach. You will never have a lack of support. You will have a tailored strategy to meet your needs, to meet the outcomes that you want. Many clients that we work with are, are looking to transfer their skills from one industry to another, and there you can't have a tailored approach. You need to dance in the moment with every Single person. That's why we don't take on thousands of people. We work with a couple of dozen a month so that we can really service our clients who are job seekers. But they're, they have a life. They are real people with real problems. They're not just an entity that are going to watch our course and get these phenomenal results.
Okay?
Like I said before, we have a world class support, state of the art training on formulas and frameworks that it took me 20 years to develop. I've worked with every single Fortune 500 company, probably every Fortune 1000. I wrote a book called Swimming in the Talent Pool, available on Amazon. You could take a look. That is a compilation of my expertise and believe it or not, interviews with CIOs and, and C suite executives from companies like Scholastic, AIG and New York Times. Okay, take a look. I know how companies hire, okay? And it's not, it's not a 1, 2, 3. That takes finesse, takes sophistication, and it takes a very customized approach to each and every single one of you.
Okay?
So I will say that for those of you that have tried other career coaching services, a resume writer, a program, coaches, courses, cohorts, group coaching, whatever it is, I feel bad that you have not gotten the outcome that you truly deserve and you've spent money. A lot of those programs do not cost 100 bucks. They're in the thousands.
Okay?
So I am offering a once in a year, okay, once, launching this once in a year opportunity for you to come into my program and work with me. And I will take off a significant amount from the price of my program to kind of help you make up on the wasted dollars with those coaches that did nothing for you.
Okay.
I had a gentleman a couple of weeks ago that I worked with that went from another course and he didn't get the results that he wanted and kind of was left holding the bag, like I like to say. And I worked with him and I helped him refine his job seeking tactics, I helped him refine his resume a bit, his interview skills and more, more specifically, putting together those business case studies and scenarios and that he was not comfortable talking about. And that is the reason why he was not interviewed or was not invited back for a second interview. So it doesn't matter what the other programs did for you, what the other coaches did for you. Book a consultation with me. Here's my, here's my calendarly link. You can book a call with me. Let's discuss the situation. Like I said, everybody's different. And we'll just get you over the hump or wherever you were left or whatever challenge you're having will get you fulfilled and ultimately into your dream job. So I hope that this helps. This recording is going to be sent to everybody. I think it's a very powerful webinar I've addressed. You know, I've spoken to a lot of people, like I said, and I. It took me a long time to launch this webinar. It took me a long time to organize this webinar based on the problems and the, the, the fallacies that other coaching programs are preaching. And I wanted to organize this webinar in a way that would show you what, what the fake promise is, what the reality is, and what is the problem with that.
Okay.
And then ultimately show you how we don't do any of that, how we do things in a very different way. So right now I'm going to open it up. I'm going to stop sharing. I'm going to open it up to some Q and A. So let's see if we have any questions. Feel free to ask me a question in the chat if you have a specific problem or you took another program and it didn't meet your needs. So going to give it two minutes for you to ask me questions and we're going to shut down this webinar in just a few minutes. Any questions? Going once, going twice. I guess there are no questions. So thank you everyone for attending. This webinar recording will be going out to you by email. So if you want to share this with anybody, with anybody, or you want to look over it again, feel free to do so. You could use that calendarly link if for those that missed it, you could always go on my website and just click on book a meeting. It was a pleasure to speak with you this afternoon. Have a great day, everybody, and see you later. Take care.
