How to talk to an old connection and ask them to help you find a job

Linda walks through how to call someone you haven't talked to in years and ask for job help. She covers what to say first, how to remind them what you do now, and the exact way to ask for leads without sounding desperate.
How to run a networking call framework. Hi, how are you? Make it very innocent. How's the family? All of that. How's work? Work is great. I'm just working 14 hour days now. Oh my God, you too? Me too. Amazon is going to drive me into the grave. Well, for, for me it's not that bad because we're just launching a new product and it's the merger. Okay. I'm actually working so hard. I'm thinking about transitioning out of this role at Amazon. I really, I. This is perfect timing. Thank you so much for your time. I really wanted to brainstorm with you. So I'm thinking of leaving. This is the direction I'm thinking of going in. I even hired a career coach, but I'm a little bit like at a crossroad. Have you ever been at a crossroad like this? Oh yeah. I went as that crossroad when I was at Procter and Gamble and I worked with this great recruiter. Let me give you the name. You see, this little question that you have gives you a tangible result, but I want you to get the meat from the conversation. Oh, thank you so much for sharing. That would be great. Blah, blah, blah. I'm not sure you remember exactly what I do. We haven't spoken for a couple of years. Let me refresh what I do. And you go into your three chapters. At the end of the three chapters you say, by the way, do you know anybody that could use my expertise? Wow, Linda, so much. Thank you so much for giving me that recap. I really wasn't sure what you're into now. I want you to get tangible information and at the same time not chit chat with the people, but use your three chapters to remind them so that it is current. You also say, listen, this is great that we brainstorm like this. You know, I'm sure you're so busy, blah, blah. Do you mind if I send you my resume so you have it handy? Do you mind if I send you my one pager that you have it handy? Do you mind if I share with you? I developed this really nice marketing one pager. You never know, you may just want to pass it around. The resume screams desperation. She's looking for a job, so is everybody else. The one pager is expertise and your brochure, they don't know that you're looking. And it is also very easy to grab that one pager, make it easy for people to help you. The next batch of people you call, even if someone is not so open or they're like squirming in their seats, roll with the conversation, make it casual and then at the end hit them right in the stomach. Okay your taekwondo. Okay your. You hit them right in and you say okay. Have a nice day. Nice talking to you. By the way. Before I go, just want to ask you a question. If God forbid you ever find yourself in a tight situation where you have to look for a job or you need to hire someone, is there a headhunter or recruiter that you would go to? They can't say no. If they say no, I don't know anybody that they're lying and you don't need to be in touch with them anymore. But the good people that really want to help, they already are on the phone with you half an hour they would say, Linda, hold on a minute. Somebody called me last week. They have an opportunity. Thank you for reminding me. Okay.
