Recruiter vs Coach

YouTube video by Michelle Perchuk (MTV Coaching) contrasting recruiters and career coaches. The speaker lists at least 14 differences, arguing recruiters prioritize corporate clients and operate from scarcity (limited open roles, focus on placement fee, low candidate advocacy), while career coaches prioritize the candidate, teach a repeatable system to create opportunities (abundance mindset), help clients level up and negotiate, and provide exclusive representation/longer-term support. The speaker cites outcomes for her coaching (clients land dream jobs in "90 days or less" and receive "two to three offers" on average) and notes she formerly worked as a recruiter.

Foreign. This is Coach Michelle from MTV Coaching, and I wanted to record this extremely important educational video. Many of you do not understand the difference between a recruiter and a coach. So I would like to go through at least 14 bullet points how the two are very different, how one is empowering and how one is looking at the job market from abundance and how a recruiter is looking at the job market from a perspective of scarcity. Okay, so a recruiter, their priority is the customer. And I mean, that's the corporate customer. They're the ones that pay them the fee. If they place you, they will make a percentage of your salary. So their number one priority is the customer. When you work with a coach, you are the coach's number one priority. The coach wants to take you forward in your career. You are their priority and they are accountable for you. A recruiter can only talk to you about the jobs that they have open right now, their current inventory. They will not be proactive and recommend you to clients, their clients, which are corporations, so that they would hire you. They wait to get job openings. And since right now there are no job openings because many companies are laying people off, the recruiters really don't have anything to talk to you about. They will continue ghosting you and telling you that they're going to call you when they have something for you. A coach is going to give you a system that will empower you to look at the job market from the abundance lens, where you will learn forever for the rest of your career how to create your own job opportunity. So a recruiter right now has scarcity. The market is very competitive and many people are being laid off by the thousands, so they have nothing to talk to you about. A coach will empower you with a system so that you could go out there and create your own job opportunities with the recruiter. You constantly are waiting. You're waiting until they call you. You're waiting until their job wreck comes out. You're waiting until they review your resume. You're waiting until the manager gives the feedback. When you work with a coach, you're in control of your job search. You intentionally reach out to decision makers on LinkedIn and you create your own job opportunities. When you work with a recruiter, you have to choose from the jobs that they have, if they have any. They're really never going to talk to you about leveling up. They're going to say, well, what job did you do in the last year? If you were a senior project manager, they will submit you only for other senior project Management roles. You will not be able to leap into a higher role with a higher pay with a career coach. Career coach will empower you, will allow you to break down your skills and show you where you have been already doing the job that you want without the title. So a career coach can definitely provide you the guidance of how you could leap into a more senior position with higher pay and higher visibility. A recruiter will only evaluate you based on a short phone call and. And the resume that you will submit. The first thing they ask you is, send me your resume. And then they critique your resume. Okay. Like they have something for you. A career coach will see your hidden potential. We interview you at length and we show you that you're being underpaid. We show you that you have the capability to get a promotion, and you're just not getting that promotion. So we always, as career coaches here at mtv, we always see your hidden potential. When you work with the recruiter, they're not exclusive to you. They're submitting you. And they're submitting probably a few other candidates because they want to make sure that they get a fee from the bank or insurance company or whatever. They're worried about their client, which is the company, not you. When you work with a career coach, we exclusively represent you. We don't need to represent you. We just give you the system that you go out there and you represent yourself. So there's no need to compete in a rat race for the job because you teach you how to go out there and how to create it yourself. They only care. Recruiters only care about the placement fee. They will drive you down on the salary expectations. They will make sure that they give the best candidate to their client for the best price. They're not looking out for you. They're looking out for their client. When you work with us at MTV coaching, we care about your career and you are our priority. I just want to make sure that you clearly understand that. Let me check my list quickly. Here's a couple of other things that recruiters will do to you. They will rarely give you constructive feedback. If the hiring manager rejected you, that's it. They're not going to talk to you. Okay? Don't think that they're going to be proactively submitting you to another client. They will ghost you if they don't have anything for you. You could just keep calling them, calling them, calling them, and they. They will not respond. So this is just a waste of your energy. You might as well be using your energy on our system. It takes a lot of effort to deal with recruiters, to remind them, to tell them, to explain to them what you're looking for. That energy, that kind of effort, if you would use that on our system, you're going to get incredible results. You're going to get results that you'll be in your dream job in 90 days or less. So working with recruiters is a tremendous amount of energy and effort without even understanding what kind of outcome you're going to get. When you work with a career coach like MTV Coaching, we are empowering you so that all the effort that you put in contacting leaders who need your expertise, that will actually amount to something. And lastly, if they get you an offer, a recruiter gets you an offer and that offer is not right and you decline it, they will never call you again. They would red flag you in their system. They will pressure you to take that offer because all they care is about their commission. At MTV Coaching, on an average, our clients get two to three offers and we hold your hand as you negotiate and make the best possible decision for your career. So I hope that you see the black and white differences between working with a recruiter and working with a career coach. Many of you are still waiting to meet that perfect recruiter. There's no such thing. How do I know? Because I used to be one. So the best thing to do is not to sit there and wait, but to take your own fate into your own hands, apply our system, which is bulletproof, and go out there and land your dream jobs yourself. I hope you found this video very educational. If you have any questions, please reach out. I will be more than happy to elaborate on any of the points that I covered in this video. Have a wonderful day. Happy hunting.
