Watch Me Fix an Onboarding Flow In 1 Hour

Charles Postiaux redesigns Crea.ai's onboarding, removing modal gates that hide which features are free, adding inline sign-up prompts, and routing users directly to the tool they clicked. He adds social proof, captures intent upfront, and surfaces upgrade moments at the point of scarcity.

In this video, we're going to review the onboarding flow of this company, Crea.ai, and together we're going to find ways to improve on what they have to boost conversions and help first-time users get activated faster. So if you don't know what this company does, they basically help you create images, visuals, edit something, and enhance videos and images. I was really interested and excited about reviewing their onboarding flow and how they kind of introduced the product to their users because I feel like it's a really big company. Like here, I mean, big in the terms of they've already raised $83 million, which is really good. But you can see here the very small headcount. So it's really impressive what they've been able to do with such a small team. And so this is like the homepage. This is where you land as a first-time user, which I think looks awesome, but it just feels maybe overwhelming. So I don't know their type of users, their key users who end up like buying stuff here. I don't know who they are, if they are very technical users, if they are just random people if it's still niche or not. But you can see it's a little overwhelming for me. And even in terms of like, you can see the pricing and all of the ways they can generate videos and images. I feel like it's very niche, very specific to key people who are very technical with that stuff. And so I'm wondering if there's a way to maybe improve on that and make it easier for new users to understand the product and get activated a lot faster because now it feels like, whoa, that's a lot of stuff. Things. And first of all, like, I really like— I think the design, the aesthetic overall is really good. Navigation is very fun. I really like the fact that you can go through pages like that, like through tabs very easily. The only problem is that when you click on something that you need to sign up for to access, even if it's free, you get this modal. And so what I would prefer to have, for example, is to have this like visual here and literally just say have that but be on the page so that you can still go through the pages without that modal that cuts off your experience, because then I have to guess. It's very difficult for new users to figure out which ones are free and which ones are not free. And so you can see here, basically 3 options are free, but you have no way of knowing that if you don't click on those. And so 2 options would be to one, be just like this, but have the message like you need to sign up, create an account like here, sign up and generate for free. That would be perfect and completely doable. Or you have like a way to show that it's activated or it's on by default, and the other ones are maybe not accessible because you need to sign up. I think the problem is that it stops people from discovering stuff. You're here, you arrive here, you see so many ideas, so many options, so much potential, and then you click on this. For example, you want videos, you're like, oh, I need to create an account. But here you click and you're like, cool, I can create something. Kind of extremes that are not the best for users. But then I imported on Figma here their onboarding flow, which is very simple, very easy to go through, which I like. I think a lot of onboarding flows, they are pretty overwhelming. And so having a way like this to make it simple and straightforward is refreshing. I would still change a few things. So for example, here, real quick, if you are a designer, I have a course, a design course to exactly do what I do on this video and on other videos. So if you're interested, go in the description to get The link and access to it. And if you are a SaaS company with over 20 employees, you can get 3 conversion wins in the next 7 days. There's also a link in the description, and if you're not satisfied, you get it for free. Back to the video. I feel like this is very general, very easy to understand. What I would do, for example, is based on what they click on, I would update this page here. So if they, for example, they want to do introducing motion transfer, I don't know if actually we can do that motion transfer. I would also like to have maybe arrows on the sides here to go through it instead of this little here, but like try now. Okay. So you see, start generating now. So what I'd like to do is if I do try now and I get to that page here, I would like maybe to, instead of welcome to Crea, because the logo is right here and I think it doesn't really add much more value. I would like to instead have that use motion transfer for free right here. Like I would do something like that because this way you don't really like, you get the connection with what you actually want because you can see the problem with that onboarding flow here is that no matter what, you're going to go back. To that homepage. And so that would be great if there was a way to connect back based on what the user inputs or wants to use. And especially again, reusing those things here, if you're able to connect what you want, the video, with the creating the account and signing up, the likelihood that people are going to sign up and create the account is going to be much higher because they are directly motivated with what they were not able to do and what they wanted to do versus now this is the only thing that's stopping them from actually using that feature. And so it's a lot easier for people to get motivated to actually go through that onboarding process, which is also again very easy to use. So I think that's a big benefit here. And so being able to connect back from what they want to do versus you need to create your account and you can use it for free right away, I think that's a big, big motivator. And if they can connect those back and create that custom almost onboarding based on what they want, I think they're going to really increase their onboarding and get a lot more users to join the product. Now, something that they could also use is having here like a way to have some social proof. I feel like they don't really need that because of the hype around it and how cool the features are and based on how many people actually use that product. And I think it's very well known, but social proof never really do anything bad if it's done right. I'd probably like to have this here and then here we could have something else, maybe like used by, I don't know how many people. Just this product, 40K users. We could say something, number one AI creation tool, something very simple and subtle. And then maybe you could have some big creators here. I don't know who uses the product or who's very well known in the space, but something like that would be also pretty exciting for people, pretty motivating for them to actually sign up because there is some trust. It reinforces one, what they're going to get out of it. So the motion transfer for free. And 2, that people that they probably know, if they are big creators, also use these products. So there is a double motivation, which combined with that super easy onboarding makes it a no-brainer for a lot of people. And so combining those 2 could really improve, I think, their onboarding metrics. And again, activation is going to be impacted by it because again, they don't need to decide once they signed up, they don't need to think here, they're like, what do I use? Well, they clicked on this, right? They clicked on the motion transfer, the first one. You're going to send them as soon as they finish signing up, you're going to send them to that specific feature so that they can start using it right away. I think that would be like an amazing boost and bonus for people so that they don't just land here and they're like, cool, what do I do now? Because I think that's very difficult to people. Like they arrive, they see that no matter if you are signed up or if you're a new user who just like not sure if they want to create an account yet, you arrive here and you're not quite sure what to do. There is a lot of potential. There is a lot of opportunities, which I think in one way is very exciting and very easy for people to sign up because there's so much value. But at the same time, it's very overwhelming. All of those new features, you see what you can do, like generate. You see some mini demos here to try, and then you have like a gallery. You're not quite sure what to do with that. And so I would probably want to know if there's a way to maybe have like this. I don't know if I can have it in white mode. This is also pretty nice. I'm just trying to find examples to use as a source, as a reference. And so instead of having this, or maybe Maybe in combination, or maybe there could be like a CTA, something, a button that says, tell us what you want to create. And the goal of this is extremely simple. You just want people to tell you what they're looking for so that you can pinpoint them towards the right feature or the right technology or whatever, maybe style that you want. They say, I have an image and I want to animate it. I don't know where exactly to go. And so it would be great to know that. And we could reuse some of those design elements here or here. And people could enter it right here. And so maybe it could be between those, those elements here. Or like maybe you could have generate at the bottom here. Maybe this is too big, right? But you get the idea. And you get those at the top. And I really like those like big chunky buttons. So we could use that. Like that could be literally the, the homepage. They could maybe have this where you can just kind of like take a shortcut instead of trying to figure out every feature, every way to generate, every style. Every new things that are popping up left and right everywhere. You just have like an easy way to tell what you want, and it doesn't have to be like it's not like I want this exact thing. It can just be I want to create a video about the sunset, so you can just type that here, and maybe you want to add a visual style to it. And this way, almost unintentionally, they use and they learn how to use Krea.ai, and they learn to use like how to maybe even train. And use a specific style or just how to use the video interface, right? And so they don't need to, as soon as they're done creating the account, they don't need to arrive back to where they were. They can already just kick off their experience, kick off their activation journey almost to see how valuable this product is. Then they just find your style and that's going to probably generate some form of image, especially if it's something that they can use for free. But the goal is not so much to create it right away. The goal is to trigger them to go into that. So for example, if it says, I have a video of me and I want to become like an alien, then they're going to have that here. They're going to say it right here. And then what's going to happen is they're going to trigger this screen here where they say what they want and it's like, okay, we found it. It's going to be the motion transfer. Create your account so that you can start using it for free. Here are your favorite creators, businesses that you love and that are using our tool. And everything is connected. They are on a mission now. They're in the process. They're They've kicked off the momentum and they have a real way to do it. They took the time to figure out what they wanted out of it. They took probably the time to like come up with or like find on their computer an image, a reference, or a style that they want to have as well. And they're like hyped about it. They're excited and looking forward to what can be created. And so then as soon as this is over, there is again a real emphasis on this is what you're going to get. This is people who trust that you trust or that you know. That want to work with us and that use this product that we have. Then you go through the usual process of creating the account, selecting it, getting the confirmation email, and then instead of arriving here, you use this software. I don't— I think they have it here, maybe not, but let's say that this is the motion transfer screen and they jump right into it. There is no waiting, there is no searching where that is. It's just you jump right into it and here they can confirm it. So it's like, okay, you said that you wanted to You wanted this and that. You have this reference. You have them here. Is this correct or do you want to update them? Then they can do whatever they want and they generate and that's it. Activation is done. If the product is good and they like the outcome, that's already a big thing. Something that's also really good that can happen here is between this process here, there are going to be some waiting because they need to, obviously you need to upload it. You need to generate whatever they're asking. And so in this process, you can talk about those upsells here. Or like, this is not an upsell, right? But you can say like, for example, this is the limit that you can get. This is how many, what do they have on the pricing? This is how many images you can generate. Maybe you have like a free generation limit. So you're like, well, you've already, you're going to generate 1 image. You have 10 left, something like that that can trigger them to upsell and to become like a paid customer. Something else you can do here is to ask like, while this is being generated, you can ask them a quick survey. To know more about their needs and what they're looking for. Like this already should tell you some things depending on how they write, depending on what they want. But maybe you can ask a bit more about the survey so that like maybe right here while this is being generated like this, maybe you can ask something here like tell us more about, about you, tell us more about what you need, what you're looking for in the product. And just something quick, like something that they only have to answer maybe 3 to 5 questions, just click on the answer. And already that's going to help you know a lot more about the user. And I don't know if you don't seem to do it, but if this were to be customizable, if based on who you are, based on what you use, based on your goals as a paid user or as a user, the landing page, the homepage could be different. And so that's going to really kick off their experience and set everything right. They go exactly where they want to go. They get exactly what they want to get. And the more they share with you, the better their experience becomes. And especially for this price, I feel like it's almost a no-brainer once they start understanding the value and the power of this tool. And so this way, I really believe that just doing those 2, 3 things that I've talked about, Crea is going to be able to really improve their onboarding flow and increase activation rate, increase time to value as well, because instead of being a bit confused or overwhelmed with so many options, so many opportunities, the user just gets straight to the point. They know what they want. They can unlock it right away. They have a motivation to build their account. And if it's good, if it delivers, maybe once they use this motion transfer, maybe it can connect back to the ecosystem. Maybe it says, well, you've done motion transfer. How about combining it with, I don't know, real-time or with video or with lip sync, right? You combine those features into the ecosystem so that they see how much value they can get for free and how much value they could get out of it if they paid for it because they are limited. It's not commercial. It's only limited to a few images, a few videos per month. And so if they were able to upgrade for, let's be honest, not that much money for like the basic plan, if they were able to get that, how much value they could get out of it, that's already a great connection and motivation. I think what's missing right now is I feel like there is no real connection between where you are as a free user or never signed up versus what you get within the onboarding flow. We can bring some of that inside of that onboarding flow and throughout the early activation. experience until they become paid customers, you're going to see some really good outcome. And so if they run out of it, you mention that and you trigger it as a motivation for the upsell. And also in the pricing, in the pricing, if they run out of something specific in here or I mean wherever, whatever they use the most, it's good to highlight it as well. So if they run out of video lip sync, I don't know, I don't see it here, but if they run out of it, it could be good to highlight it right here at the top, make it stand out of like you get you don't have enough LeapSync benefits, here is what you're going to get for each plan. And that way it connects again back to what they need, what they want versus what you can offer for that specific price. And that might help you get even more people to convert on the product.
