Dr. Aziz argues that trying to be liked by everyone drains your confidence. He uses a rain-in-Oregon metaphor to show why accepting dislike is inevitable, then reframes it: "I'm not for everybody." This shift frees emotional energy and increases confidence.

Do you hate being disliked? If so, one, you're human. Welcome. And number two, I have good news for you in this video. And the good news might sound like bad news, but it's going to be the most liberating, powerful thing for you. Because, look, the fear of being disliked is what's holding not only you, but the vast majority of people from living their lives with more confidence, more boldness, more freedom, right? Because if I'm me, if I let myself out, if I share something about myself, if I'm just more relaxed and I approach a group of people, someone might dislike me. And so that fear of being disliked is what's holding you back in your life. And in this short video, you're gonna learn a powerful, liberating truth that's gonna set you free. You ready? Here we go. So the truth is that you will be disliked. In fact, there's probably someone right now that doesn't like you. Now, I know it might be, like, cringy inside. Oh, no. What do I have to do to fix that? Should I change how I am? Should I change the way I dress? Should I change the way that I talk? Should I change what I do with my life? Should I change who I love in the world so my parents approve of me? Should I change the way that I talk to people? Should I be more submissive? Should I be more pleasing? Should I not make my jokes because some people don't like my jokes? Should I only say things that people are going to approve of? And now you're off to the races, running the nice person playbook to see how to make sure that everybody likes you. And that's a playbook that you might be drawing from that clients that I work with are drawing from. And they've been doing it unconsciously for 20, 30, 40 years. And underneath that is this. They're running from someone might dislike me. And so the liberating truth is when you turn towards that and say, yes, not only someone might, but someone will. And not just once, but like, oh, you've this terrible experience in your life once where someone doesn't like you. That's going to happen repeatedly. And there's different kinds. There's maybe someone close to you is temporarily upset with you, you disappointed them, they wanted something from you, and you weren't available for that. You said no. You didn't want to be in the relationship or the friendship or you. You left a workplace that wasn't working for you. And then people there are like, oh, but we need you, or this is Hard for us now that you're leaving, and someone there might dislike you or feel upset with you temporarily, ooh, that's uncomfortable. And then there's other dislike that's. That's more removed. There's someone right now that doesn't like you, that you've never met, and they've never even met you, but they categorically don't like you because of your skin color, because of your gender, because of your race, because of your religious background, because of the language you speak, because of the accent, because of the way your face looks. And they say, oh, I don't like people that look like that. And then right now that that dislike is there, and this might sound intimidating, daunting, discouraging, but man, it's the best thing ever when you really fully just get it. So right now you might not see it. It's sunny outside and beautiful. But I live in Oregon, and 10 months of the year it's raining, I mean, or cloudy showers off and on. And when I first moved to Oregon, I lived in California, where it was sunny a lot. And I came and it was okay, but, you know, it dragged on. And then we start getting into spring and it's still raining. I'd look at my phone to see the forecast and be 10 more days of off and on rain. I was like, you know, and I didn't go bitch about it to everybody, but inside I'd look at that forecast and I'd feel kind of discouraged. And then at some point I thought, this is crazy. I live in this beautiful place, and 10 out of the 12 months I'm slightly discouraged because it's raining. And that's. That's a pretty short amount of enjoyable weather then. And so I realized I have to change something. And I truly, fully started to accept the weather. And so it's like, it's raining. Oh, what's it, what's beautiful about the rain? How does it smell after it rains? What's it like to just go out and run in the middle of the rain? And it became beautiful and extraordinary and now truly the rain doesn't bother me. I actually really enjoy it. And here's the thing. I don't know if you're ever going to say, I really enjoy it when people dislike me. It's fantastic. I don't know, let's not get delusional here, maybe. And if you experience that level of liberation, great. I don't love it when people dislike me. But it's not about loving it. It's about accepting it it's okay. It's going to happen like the rain in Oregon, 10 months of the year. And just like, you know, I guess you could move to a different state or something. I'm not moving. We got this house. I'm staying put. You can't move somewhere where people aren't going to dislike you. You cannot be so nice, so pleasing, so polite that everybody likes you always. And when you fully own that and accept that, you can say, you know what? I am going to be disliked. And when the dislike comes, you reframe it. There's nothing wrong, nothing horrible has happened. It's not some mistake in the universe. You're not a bad human. Just remind yourself with this magical line, my friend, I'm not for everybody. I'm not for everybody. Isn't that true? Some people are going to like me. Some people are going to dislike me. Sometimes the dislike is temporary, sometimes it kind of entrenches and they have a grudge and a story. I'm not for everybody. And what that allows you to do is accept it and start to release and calm in your nervous system. There's no horrible threat, nothing wrong is going on in the cosmos and that frees up your heart, your energy, your focus, your mental energy. What do I want to do with my life instead of having to solve this problem so it goes away? There it is. Now I'm going to go be with my kids. Now I'm going to go take some at work. Now I'm going to go pursue my social life and give my energy to people who actually like me because there's going to be other people that dislike me. I don't need to spend my energy there.
