Dr. Aziz explains why we struggle to say no and how it's actually self-care, not rudeness. Saying no protects your own needs without harming others, and the person asking has other resources besides you.

Most of the nice people that I help have the completely wrong idea about what no actually means. You see, they think that no is rude or mean and it's damaging to relationships or even dangerous. The truth is, the reason you don't say no is not because you don't know what to say. It's because you don't have permission to say no. Because you're bad. You're hurting people. So I want to share two new ideas with you to help you see no in the right light. First, no is not hurting somebody. No is taking care of yourself, which is absolutely essential. And number two, you're not the only resource for people in the world. You're not their savior. You're not the only one who can help them. If they ask you for something and you say no, guess what they're going to do? They're going to go to somebody else. And if you see them in any other light, then you're not giving them the respect that they deserve. They're not a child. They're at a grown human. They can find other resources, they can find other people. You're not the only one. And when you start to see no in that way, that you're taking care of yourself, all of a sudden, everything changes. And the words just come freely out of your mouth.
