How To Stop Absorbing Other People's Energy As An Empath

Dr. Aziz explains why energy shields and sage don't work for empaths. The real problem is taking responsibility for other people's feelings. Instead of shutting down, stay open and observe their emotions without owning them.

Are you an empath who absorbs other people's energy and then carries it with you and it makes you feel tense or anxious or overwhelmed? If so, you have to watch this video because most of the material out there online I've personally found doesn't actually work. And I haven't seen it work for my clients until I discovered a key secret that I'm going to share with you in this video. First, empath. You may or may not have heard that term or identify with that or know what that is. Basically what I found is myself and all the clients that I work with who are very nice people, very conscious and considerate of others, might even have a level of social anxiety. You're worried about what other people think. That is actually paired with being a very sensitive person. What that means is you actually feel other people more intensely than others. Now, look, there's nothing wrong with that. I used to resist that, like, sensitive. That doesn't sound good. Well, some people are just born with more sensitive hearing. Some people are born with more sensitive taste. They can taste more nuance. Other people are born empaths with more emotional sensitivity. You feel your own emotions more strongly than others, but you can also actually feel the emotions of others, which is not actually a problem, as you'll see in this video. It actually might be your superpower, but if you don't get control of it, then it can become really overwhelming and draining. So what you find out there, if you looked around the Internet, is a lot of how to set up a shield. You need to have an energetic shield. Their energy doesn't get in or. You gotta light some sage, man. You just gotta light some sage. Actually smells quite nice. You gotta lay some sage and clear your energy system, man. And look, I'm being. I'm teasing it a little bit. I think sage smells great. I think it's awesome. But none of that stuff really worked for me. Some people said they would take the energy and throw it into the ground. And I was like, I don't know about all this stuff. I don't think it's working for me. So none of that stuff worked for me. And I kept trying because that's the advice that I would found. And Judith Orloff, who I interviewed on my podcast, is like the expert on empaths. And she would say, you gotta dance in the morning and let it go. And so I would try all these different techniques, and nothing really seemed to work. Now, meanwhile, I was working with more and more people, larger and larger groups of people then working Online and leading calls every day. And I just feel all gummed up. I would leave a call and I'd just be so drained and tight. It's like I would feel the pain of everyone in the call. And I got to the point where I was like, I don't know if I can keep doing this. Like I want to help people. I have this mission to spread confidence in the world. But at the same time, this is eating me up. Can't I just get like a job in finance or something? Or I don't have to feel so much until I discovered this. Now I'm going to break it into two things. The goal here I found is spaciousness. It's not that someone else is suffering, it's that you take it in, right? And the taking it in is what I would call a loss of spaciousness. So now they're like right up in here, their feelings are in you, right? So there's this loss of spaciousness. So how do we create more spaciousness? Because the problem I have with the energetic boundaries and all this stuff is it's kind of like I don't want to feel I'm going to be closed off to the world. And I don't want to be closed off to the world. I want to be open to the world. I live my life in a cage of social anxiety, in a cage of niceness where I was really closed off to the world. I was a afraid all the time. No, I want to be wide open. I want to be able to talk to anyone if someone's suffering. I want to be able to interact with them and not be like, oh my God, your energy is negative. I have to get away from you. That doesn't work as a coach who works with people who are suffering all day long. So I want to be bold. My wife's having a hard time. I don't be like, your energy is low vibes get away from me. You're totally messing up my aura. Where's my sage? Right? So no, that doesn't work. I got to be out there in the world, right? So. And maybe you feel that way too. So what do we do? We need to create spaciousness while still interacting with other people. And it comes down to this one life changing secret. The problem is not that you're empathic. The problem is not that you're highly sensitive. You feel other people's emotions. That's actually a superpower. The problem is this. You are knowingly or unknowingly taking responsibility for the emotions of others. That's what causes the loss of spaciousness. That's what causes it to get in and cause all the physical pain and emotional pain and overwhelm. And that's what causes you to feel so bad and feel so draining, you want to get away from it all that you're taking, taking on responsibility. So let me give you a quick example. Let's say you got to the woods, you go for a little hike, got a little picnic lunch with you, just by yourself, having a little me time. You go out to this forest, you find a nice stump to sit on. You sit down, you open up your little sack lunch, and you look at all the trees around you. There's some birds chirping, there's some squirrels running around. It's a beautiful, quiet scene. Not a human in sight. What are you doing? Well, if you're present, you're just observing. There's a tree over there. There's a squirrel, there's a bird. There's nothing that's yours to manage, to influence, to control, to fix. Now, when your friend is crying or you walk into a room and you just feel that that person's suffering, and maybe they're not even aware that they're suffering, but you can feel it. That's just like observing the birds and the trees. That's just observing it. But you don't do that. No, you have an unconscious pattern of my friend is crying. Oh, I have to help them feel better. Oh, that person over there is in pain. Oh, I need to do something for them. And look, this might be conscious, like with your friend. Of course I have to feel better. What a good friend does. But with that stranger, it might be totally unconscious. You don't even know that you're doing it. That, to use the metaphor of the forest, that's like you looking, the forest being like, oh, I hope that tree is feeling good. Oh, I hope that tree is getting enough water. Oh, that tree is shorter than other tree. I bet that tree feels bad. That squirrel doesn't have any friends. Oh, squirrel, I have to help you feel better. If you did that, you wouldn't like going to the woods. You'd be like this. Nature is so draining, man. No, it's draining because you're taking it on. Because you have an unconscious idea that you're responsible. Now, why do you have the unconscious idea that you're responsible? Because it goes down to the root that causes niceness and people pleasing in the first place, which is I'm not okay. If you're not okay and I'm especially not okay if you're not okay with me. But even if you're just not okay, that's not okay. I can't feel good right now. I have to make sure that my environment is totally peaceful, that everybody's feeling totally happy, that no one's suffering in any way, and then I can relax. And so what that setup does is makes it so you can never relax. It makes you constantly drained and anxious and stressed and overwhelmed and hurting because other people in the world have emotions and they're hurting. And guess what? A lot of people are even dealing with their own emotions ever. So what are you gonna do? Well, I guess you're just gonna have to stay away from everybody. And now I'm an. I'm overwhelmed, so I can't go to the party. I'm an empath. I overwhelmed. I can't go to that meeting. I'm an empath. I can't earn. I can't go to that festival. I can't give that talk. I can't lead that workshop. I can't do this thing. I'm an empath. Right? And if you take on that identity and all the limitations that come with that, well, enjoy your life in your room alone. Because that's the only place that we might feel like our energy is safe. Maybe my cat. Your cat can be in there with you. It's okay. Here is the key and the liberation, my friend. It's that you don't need to be responsible. What if you could let someone else have their feelings? Just like the trees in the woods are swaying in the wind and the squirrels are running around. You can observe, you can even lovingly. You can lovingly be with the trees in the forest. You can lovingly be with your friend. Sorry, you're hurting. You can see Bob across the room that you don't even know. And he doesn't even know he's hurting. And you can say, sorry, Bob's hurting inside. Not mine, not mine to deal with. And when you really get that this absorbing of other people's energy stops, and when you're really. You're still thinking you're responsible for everybody, you want to fix everybody. Then all the sage and jumping up and down and mantras and chants in the morning, whatever you're trying to do to clear your energy system are not going to work because you're holding on so tight to I'm not okay. If you're not okay, change that. Everything in your world will change. And I want to help you do that.
