Dr. Aziz (Shrink for the Shy Guy) explores how failure and rejection sting largely because of pre-existing internal stories (his term: the "safety police") that predict doom and shrink identity. He defines failure as not obtaining a desired outcome within a chosen timeframe and shows via dating, health, and business examples that the painful meaning of failure is constructed by prior narratives. Failure, he argues, can instead be an informative signal — a chance to uncover and uproot old limiting stories (metaphor: weeds and roots) — and he ends with an action step: reflect on a recent setback, notice body sensations, identify the imagined future and the story, and begin to change it.
