Dr. Aziz explains why sharing ideas at work triggers anxiety. When we present an idea, we scan for disapproval because we link it to exclusion, rejection, judgment, and job loss. That fear of disapproval cascades into self-censorship.

How do you think that's going to show up when you're at work and you got those people looking at you and you're sharing your idea? You are bracing because some part of you is concerned about that same exclusion, rejection, dislike, or the most important precursor to all that is disapproval. We start to hyper-scan for disapproval because disapproval can be the harbinger of doom, right? It's like, oh, if they disapprove of me, then I'm going to get excluded. Then they're going to say no to me. Then they're going to judge me. Then I'm not going to fit in here. Then I'm going to get fired.
