Will My Ex Come Back Again Like Last Time?

Elizabeth Stone answers whether an ex who left twice will return again. She says people repeat patterns unless something changes, and advises accepting if he's truly done rather than waiting. If he comes back, great, but don't count on it: move on and meet new people.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth Stone. Here's today's question: My ex left me. He came back after a year and a half. Then we lasted 5 months and split again. I think she means the same thing again. It says the same time again. Will he come back? I love him so much. I'm still on my own and I don't want anybody else. So I have no way of knowing the answer to what your ex is going to do in the future. My crystal ball continues to be broken, but people tend to repeat past behavior unless something major changes. And there wasn't much more detail in the email, so I don't know what it is for you. I've repaired my own relationship with 2 significant separations myself, so I'm not speaking here from a place of thinking that yours is any less important or means nothing to you somehow. Not at all. But here's the thing. If someone wants to be gone, they want to be out of my life, I want them to experience that reality. If I love them like I say I do, then I want what they want for themselves, not what I think I want for them or whatever self-improvement project I can cook up for us to do together. I don't want our relationship to be a constant self-improvement project. If we can't stay together peacefully, then it makes sense not to be together right now. If we happen to have joyful times together and want to keep doing that, then I'm all for it. But reality has the answers. You said something I found interesting here. I love him so much, I'm still on my own, and I don't want anybody else. It's as though this condition of singleness and desire on your part is making you think that your relationship with your ex is meant to be somehow. Well, I'm sorry to say it like this, but it's meant to be if it's happening. If it's not happening, it's hard to say whether or not it's meant to be because it's not happening. Reality has the answers. So go out, enjoy yourself, and spend fun times with new people. Just because there isn't someone else right now, that doesn't mean there can't be anyone else. The limitation about that is in your mind. As far as what your ex-boyfriend is going to do, like I said, again, my crystal ball is in the shop, but I wish you the best out there.
