How I Would Build a Movement From Scratch

Hui Hui Lek breaks down four pillars for building a grassroots movement: a clear cause, an enemy to confront (like playing too small), a shared identity that unites members, and fearless leadership that models bold action. Each pillar is necessary to turn a personal mission into collective impact.

The enemy of our movement is— What do you need to do in order for you to create a movement? Let me share with you the framework on creating a movement, the 4 pillars of a movement. So what do you need to do in order for you to create a movement and to be able to build trust and to be able to create all of that? The very first is what is the cause? You can also call the cause the goal. You can also call the cause The vision. What's the vision that you have for your group, for your community, for your tribe? When you bring your community together, when you bring your tribe together, where are you bringing them towards? To me, Mission to Movement is our movement. I want to be able to create 1,000 of you future leaders, transformational leaders, movement leaders who knows how to create transformation and knows how to create a movement for your group as well, so that together all of us can create a million impacts. That is our movement. I want to show you how to turn your mission into a movement. I want to show you how to rally a group of people together and then everybody move towards the same goal together, right? And that's what makes it beautiful. That is what Mission to Movement is all about. So I'm running the Mission to Movement, I'm also running the Introvert Movement at the same time. So when you've got a cause, that is like a goal that you can bring everyone towards, there is a direction and a vision that everyone's moving towards. And that's the first thing. So the second thing is, when it comes to a movement, and this is critical, is you gotta have an enemy. And you know what is the enemy of the Mission of Movement? You know what's the enemy of our movement? The enemy of our movement is you playing too small. Every day, the enemy that I'm fighting together with you is your limitations. You thinking that you don't have what it takes. You thinking that I'm not sure whether I can do this or not. You not stepping up even more. That's what I'm fighting against every single day. And I'm fighting this with you, which is why I do so many trainings, which is why I do so many events, which is why I create so many frameworks. Why? I break down everything. Even if you wanna obsess about something, I'll teach you what's that framework, what's the formula to be obsessed. I teach you what is the formula to have courage. I teach you what's the formula to have your bigger desire. Why? So that I can give you every single solution that is holding you back. And my hope is that you will take all these solutions, apply it to yourself, and you will step up even more, right? And so that is the enemy that I'm fighting with you every single day, so that you stop playing small, so that you know that you've got what it takes, and that you will go, you will step up and play bigger. That's the second thing. The third thing is when it comes to your tribe, then you need to have a shared identity. What is a shared identity? It means that every one of you, you know that you are a mission-driven coach. Every one of you, you have a shared identity. We are not transaction-based coaches. We are all mission-driven. We all have this shared identity of being a mission-driven coach. And so you've got to create a mission and identity that everyone identifies with. And so what's the final thing here? The last one is fearless leadership. So if there is no fearless leadership, there is no movement. Every movement starts with someone, a leader who's fearless, someone who's willing to break the 4-minute mile, someone who's willing to step up, right, and go first before everyone else, to trailblaze before everyone else, okay? And that is what, um, the leader of the movement needs to do, okay? So these are the 4 pillars of the movement.
