In this motivational business talk, the speaker argues that before anyone will purchase a product, service, or process, they must first buy into the person selling it. The foundation is self‑belief and a clear personal mission. To earn others’ confidence, two pillars are essential: (1) competency – the proven ability to deliver repeatable results that fulfill promises, and (2) character – integrity manifested by keeping one’s word and being trustworthy. The speaker stresses that both must be demonstrated consistently over time; isolated instances are insufficient. When competency and character are repeatedly shown, the seller becomes a trusted authority, attracting customers who want to connect with, respect, and learn from them.

People buy you before they buy your product, before they buy your process, before they buy anything else. They have to buy into you first. You yourself, you have to buy into yourself first. You gotta have that mission within you. And how do you then fortify yourself, right? How do you allow yourself to become this attractive person that people want to buy into? that people want to connect with, that people respect and will want to learn from you. There are 2 things that you absolutely need to display in order for you to be able to gain the confidence from others, especially in this business. The very first thing is this: competency. You've got to have the competency. Competency means the ability To be able to get results. Meaning that if someone buys from you, are you able to help them get results? That's competency. Are you able to deliver on your promise and get them the outcome that they want? That's the very first one. And if you're able to do that over and over and over and over again, that's how you gain trust. But that's only half of the equation because how many of you Have met people who are very, very competent, who are very, very capable, but you still don't trust them. But why? Why are you not able to trust that person? It's because of this other thing, and this other thing is called character. Do you do what you say, and do you say what you do? Are you the kind of person who is very nice and also you are able to follow, to keep your word. Because if you can keep your word and people know that you've got the integrity, then coupled with competency, you will win. How many of you have known of people, right, who are very, very nice but they just can't get things done? And how many of you know of people who are very competent but their character is dubious, or you know that you just can't trust them? And so when you put these 2 together, competency And this character, that's when you're going to get a bedrock confidence. And when you can do this over and over and over and over again, if you just do it once, it's not enough. But if you can do this consistently, that's how you become trusted and become the authority.
