Should You Get The New PS5 Slim?

Justin Page unboxes the PS5 Slim and compares it to the original PS5 and Xbox Series X. It's 33% smaller but weighs about the same, has a glossy finish instead of matte, and the disc drive costs extra. He says existing PS5 owners probably shouldn't upgrade yet, especially with a PS5 Pro rumored.

Ah, let's unbox this PlayStation Slim. So I managed to get my hands on one of these new PlayStations, and this is considered a slim version even though it doesn't say it. Sony typically remodels their systems, just like the PlayStation 4, they made a PlayStation 4 Slim. PlayStation 3 I think they made a slim version. I didn't get a PlayStation 3. I ended up skipping that and was Xbox 360. I don't know why I didn't play the PlayStation 3 though. So they remade this model, apparently has the same internals. It still runs the same power even though this does have a 1TB SSD versus the 825 that came on the OG. But we're gonna unbox this and we're gonna take a look. But before we do that, as you guys could tell, I got the Call of Duty version and there are two bundles happening right now. They have the Spider-Man 2 bundle and they also have the Call of Duty. Now I did not get the Spider-Man 2 version because I already have Spider-Man 2, beat it, amazing game, suggest you guys to play it, it is phenomenal. Call of Duty: Hunting the Handle is getting some backlash on this as it is considered DLC even though they're selling this as a full $70 game. I don't have Call of Duty 3, I did play a lot out of Modern Warfare 2, but we'll see how Modern Warfare 3 is. Before we get into that, the box is significantly smaller. Than the OG box. Looking at the packaging, it still has the same 8K up here, even though we're not really playing 8K games. See, it's still the same flimsy box that was on the original one, which means there's probably a box inside the box. There's a little hole here. Maybe I can push this in.
Oh, cables. What else we got?
We got Oh, these are the clips. Oh man, that's great. These are the plastic clips that are to be the stands for when you put it horizontally, since they don't include the vertical stand, which the original did, but you have to pay $30 plus tax. HDMI. The good old DualSense here. Wow, I haven't held a brand new DualSense in a long time. Wow. The grand finale. Oh, so before this used to be a USB-A to USB-C, and they changed it to a C to C because they changed some of the ports on the PlayStation, and we're gonna get into that. Booklets that nobody reads.
First impressions, they did a gloss top and a matte bottom.
The OG had full matte. 4 plates. Tape on here, probably to hold the plates in place as for shipping. Again with the gloss here that does collect fingerprints as well as scratches. But I mean, if you're not moving your system around as much, then it shouldn't be a problem. But I don't hate it and I don't love it. I mean, that, that donk. Shawty got that donk in the back. It's not terrible. I mean, well, the size— if you look at the back, the back looks pretty much as thick as the front compared to both of them. But compared to the OG, as they say, 33% smaller. I wonder when they come out with new plates, I wonder how that's going to be. Are they going to do different textures or what off-brand people will do for Amazon per se? These are my dbrand plates and this used to be gloss, but I put a matte vinyl on it just because I want to give it that stealthy look. I love the black. I mean, I'm just Mwah! This, I don't know, I feel like, I don't know, I don't hate it. I do like white and black combo, but the gloss, the matte, I don't know. And I guess for true size comparison, since black typically makes you look smaller than white, so for true comparison between the two, you can see a significant difference now. PlayStation logo still in the same area, the gloss, same texture. And in the hand, this does feel light, but it's pretty dense. It's not as light as you would think it would be. This is— yeah, this is still heavier because that took a lot of effort to be able to hold this with one hand. This, you're good. I'm gonna take the tape off just because I'm curious about this drive here. Now, there's no planning with this video. I did not structure with anything I was saying, kind of just going on a whim. Oh yeah, the stand. So yeah, so the stand, you have to pay, like I said, the $30 stand to keep it up. But I mean, come on, it's standing up by itself without the need of a $30 stand. Even if you push it over, unless you got kids, you should be pretty good. And now that I think about it, but I don't even know where the stand is for this originally because I typically keep it like this and then horizontally. I mean, it's teeters, but if it's just sitting there, okay. But here, I mean, same thing. I guess if you lose those clips, which— it's got Sony's, uh, logos here, which are pretty cool. So I wonder if it's feet or— it's probably like the feet that's in inside here. There's little holes where you pop these into place too. Okay, sure, cool. I just, I feel like if they would have did like a fold-out clip, that would have been a lot better than having these plastic ones that you might lose. And I guess if you want to hold it, see, now I really think about it because I'm probably gonna lose these. I always keep my PlayStation like this unless I keep these in, then this is just how it's gonna look chilling and It almost looks like it's got like Dracula teeth. Like, look at it, like it's little fangs on it.
Grrr.
So they came out with two versions of this. They have the digital and they have the disc. Now the disc version is $4.99, which this bundle was oddly $4.99, which included the game. So technically the game was free. It's probably a Black Friday holiday promotion, not 100% sure, but you can't find the digital version by itself right now. I've tried looking online and I can't find it. Only thing I could find is the disc version, even on Sony's website. Interesting thing about the disc drive is that it's detachable. The digital version comes without the disc drive, which you can then upgrade for, for I think $60, $80, $60, $80 just to get that. So it would make no sense to even get the digital unless you solely play digital. In the off chance that you might want to play disc, then you upgrade that way. But if you feel like you're probably gonna play disc anyways, you might as well just pay the extra $50 up front instead of paying the extra $60 or $80 later down the road. I don't know. Let's take this off because I'm curious on how this—
oh.
Okay, so it pops off from the front. That's not bad at all. And then this is the disc drive, and there's the arrow right here, and you just pop that off, and there you go. And then that's your disc drive in your hand, which is $80 in the future. I guess interesting about this is that if you do have malfunctions with the disc drives, which a lot of these consoles do have problems with disc drives, you could just replace it. So sure, kind of hook them in, pop it in.
Oh.
Okay, so same way. So the front folds outwards. So you have the SSD here, which you can upgrade to for your memory. I have a 2TB in this one. I'm going to change that and put that in here. You know, I might just do that right now. My surgery kit. Highly recommend getting one of these. These things are awesome. I'll put the link down below. Has every size that you need. Torx, regular screwdriver, flathead. Love this. This is awesome. Links down below. I like these little screws. It's got the PlayStation little logo on them. I don't know if you really see it, but that's pretty cool.
Okay, that's in.
Oh my God, I've broken a lot of things in my life, and that's just PTSD kicking in every time I hear that noise. Oh, okay, shouldn't be that hard to take off.
Oh my gosh, that's on This is terrible.
All right, nothing's broke. Okay, so interesting design here. It is, yeah, like I said, slimmer, but man, those fingerprints, those fingerprints catch on quick. I'm definitely gonna get a matte skin on here just like the OG. Clearly I take these plates off a lot because look at those marks from taking the plates on and off, and that's just from changing these covers. Put these on back first.
Then front.
Yes sir, I'm getting better. So there you have it, PlayStation Slim. Do I hate it? I don't hate it. Do I love it? I think it'll grow on me. I'm just happy that it is a lot smaller than the other one, and a lot is— it's relative depending on you as a person, but I could fit it better and it won't stand out as much, especially with the pop collar on the OG. Now, do I recommend upgrading from this if you already have one? Absolutely not. It's the same internals. You're just getting like 200 more gigabytes of storage, which you could just get an SSD and whatever. If you're complaining about this being too big and it drives you insane at home and you're very OCD and things have to be tight-knit, everything has a place— too big? Sure, whatever, spend the money for it. It's the same price. However, there are rumors about there being a PlayStation Pro coming out in a year from now, so I would suggest waiting for that if you are dying or if you want to upgrade your PS5. If not, just continue playing this one. It's do just fine. Is there anything else I need to touch on? Now for those who are curious about the size comparison between this and the Series X, this is what we're working with now. This thing is still massive. It's heavy. This is so much lighter than—
I don't think so.
It's pretty standard. Just wanted to show a comparison between the two, unbox it with you guys, because I like unboxing videos and this is what I kind of enjoy doing on my spare time when I'm not being in the ER with patients. Interesting. So this is on the bottom while the other one is at the top. Comment below if you guys are gonna upgrade. Also, if you guys like the difference in the two, or if you hate it, either one. Like this video. Also subscribe for new content. I'm gonna be posting more things. I'm all over the place. I'm working on my Hawaii trip there. That's still going on. This is Justin Page. Peace.
