3 Hacks to Perform at a High Level When You Don’t Feel Motivated

Lori and Chris Harder share three ways to push through low motivation: change your environment to higher-energy spaces, review your diet from the past week since it tanks energy, and reset your goals if they've gone stale. Chris reworked his entire podcast format to get excited again.

I know what I can do. I know how I can feel better. I know how I can get more dopamine and serotonin, because that's all it is at the end of the day, guys, like, there is so many things that we can do to improve our dopamine and serotonin, which means you might only be three to four days away from waking up feeling excited about your life.
That's motivating. And we're back with another episode of.
He Said, she Said.
All right, so we're up in the lake house right now. This is that period of summer the past few years where we come up to our lake house. It's just northern Wisconsin, like, right in between Green Bay and Door County. And all the other summers, we've gotten to, like, wake surf a ton, be out on the boat like, three, four times a week. What have we gotten one time in two weeks so far?
Well, the weather has been a little rough.
Yeah, not a great wake surfing summer weather kind of summer so far. So fingers crossed that changes.
Summer is not summering right now.
Summer is not summering right now. I hope summer is summering for you guys, wherever you're listening. Okay. Speaking of summering, at least I'm feeling lean for when we finally can get on the damn boat. Thanks to gloce. What's your gloce effect to kick this thing off today?
Okay, so he asked me to get my glocee fact ready, and I did not tell him that it actually has to do with that. So my gloce fact is that we chose a probiotic that has 30 clinical studies on that on it. And not only to know that it works and survives manufacturing and the trip to your gut and the trip to your home, but also there are studies around body composition, which they're showing improvements. Improved body composition.
That's what I'm seeing.
That's, you know, you are like doubling and tripling up on glossy. So maybe that's part of it.
I'm like the glossy cookie monster.
You are obsessed.
All right, well, listen, you guys want to feel like that. You want to feel lean, you want to feel good? We're giving you 25% off. Shout out to Lori for her generosity. All you have to do is go to getglosi.com that is getgloci.com getgloci.com and use coupon code. Happy to get 25% off. Thanks to you for being a listener.
Yes.
All right, so speaking of being at the lake house, speaking of having not great weather when I'm around great weather all the time. You know me, I love a good rainstorm.
Like, I love.
I, Mr. Love Rainstorms. But at the same time, I'm very unmotivated. If I'm around an area that has slow energy and gray weather, like, it really makes me not want to do anything. And if I think it demotivates me, I think it demotivates you. Like 10x.
Yeah, I. I remember when we lived in Minneapolis, I would constantly be just like, I would. I would even start crying in the winter for no reason. All of the time. Like, it. It's so. I'm so seasonally affected. And I know that so many of you listening. Whenever I share this about myself, you're like, oh, my God, me too. I mean, I really do think that we, as humans, a lot of us, are seasonally affected. So being up here, oh, my God. With just, like, solid of rain and no sun from when we first got here, now I know we need rain. I know that's not that bad. I know places get a lot more rain than that. But coming from the sunny weather, after we have, you know, transitioned from Midwest to being on the west coast for so long, like, I feel that so much. So I was telling Chris, I'm like, wow, I am so unmotivated. Like, I'm going on two weeks of not waking up feeling motivated at all. Like, zero, zilcho. All I want to do is nap. If I'm being totally honest, I don't feel like doing any of my work. But I am. So that's what we want to talk about today.
Like, it's real, guys. It's tangible. For example, when we wake up at our California home, it's in this really busy, dense beach city called Corona del Mar. And so not only is there good sunny weather 99% of the time, but you wake up and there's people everywhere. There's so much buzz, you feed off of it. And we naturally have a much different pep in our step. Now, here's why I'm explaining this. No matter where you are, no matter what your surroundings are, there's some things you can do to make sure that you're still productive, because Lori and I are still being massively productive. I don't want you to hear this and be like, oh, gosh, they're demotivated and therefore the results are going down. No. We have a standard of high performance, and we wanted to share how we still produce at a high level even when we are not motivated. And so there's a Few tips. And the first tip is this. You gotta control your environment. And I know you've heard us say that before, but if you're in an environment that is not naturally motivating you, you have to control the controllables. Let me repeat that. You have to control the controllables. And usually it's a series of very little things. We just got back from the gym. On the way to the gym, what did we do, Laurie? We looked for high energy music. We kept going through all the different songs in a playlist, be like, okay, this one's awesome. Then we made ourselves, like, clap to the beat in, like, funny ways just to get our energy up to this high energy music, right? So there's too many things might be cheesy, but it started to change our energy a little bit, started to change our motivation a little bit. Then I got to the gym and I really upped the music. Like, started with AC dc, turned up as loud as I possibly could in my ears, and, you know, that kind of got the energy going a little bit. And then when I had the energy up and going and I had a lot of momentum, then I switched over to even more positive propaganda. I went and I popped in a couple of podcasts from people that I knew would motivate me. And by the end of the workout, I absolutely and utterly crushed it. Like, top 10 workout this year for sure.
So I want you guys to think about this. Like, you're not going to find motivation in the place where you've lost it. Like, I am sitting at home at this desk that we have in this master bedroom, and I'm like, okay, so I have zero energy right now. I feel like I'm trudging through all of the tasks that I have to get done. So I am going to go find. I'm going to work, to go find somewhere to work that has people and energy and buzz. So today I am literally about to go get in my car to go back to this coffee shop that I found, because I know once I'm around other people and the energy, I totally change how I feel. So, of course, if I'm at a lake house, in the bedroom that we sleep in, even though we've got this cute little desk area, like, that's probably not going to be the environment or the place that I'm going to create really high energy, motivating content for people.
And I want to point out, you're going to literally drive 25 minutes to the coffee shop, right? Because lake house is out in a Rural area. Really shout out to the exchange. It's pretty awesome place. And then drive 20 minutes back. So you're gonna burn an hour of your day knowing that you're gonna get that hour back and then some of production. Right. Condition by subtraction because you're gonna go put yourself in a much higher energy setting.
Yep, exactly. So another thing is, you know, we join a gym when we come here.
Yep.
A lot of people that we know who kind of do what we do, like maybe have a second home or something like that, they'll have their workout equipment in that home, especially if it's.
A little more rural, like garage or.
Whatever, set out a little bit. But we drive to a gym to other motivated people who are working out here as well. So if you guys can hear the theme, if you're like at home and you know, maybe you just joined entre the entrepreneurship life. I can't tell you how many entrepreneurs that we meet, especially in the beginning, and they're like, man, it's just so hard. Like, it's hard for me to get to do my things. Like, I feel like I'm lonely and isolated. Yeah, because you are. And you probably are really missing a big percentage of why people work better in workplaces. So you have to start creating your own workplace, your own energy, your own buzz. And you can either complain about it and think there's something wrong with you, or you can know truly that people really do create, like their content will reflect on the state that they made it in and the environment. I'm actually reading this book right now called Pre Suasion. I think it's Robert Cini. I might have that wrong. But he's talking all about how when he creates different content, especially if he is doing research, wants to help people get motivated. Like, he goes and writes in a coffee shop around people, and he gets very different content than when he writes at home. He writes a lot more sciency at home. This is so interesting. Sciencey and facts at home. And he writes a lot about, like the social effects mixed in with that and tells stories. And he says the writing is so much better when he goes and gets around people as well, because it reminds him of who he's doing it for, what he's doing. And he has more motivation.
And so the first one, change your environment, that's totally within your control. Second one, change your diet. I'm telling you, a lot of lack of motivation, a lot of feeling sleepy, a lot of trudging through the tasks that you have to do is Absolutely diet related. It's what you not just had the night before, right? Did you have some cocktails? Did you eat some bad food? It's what you've been putting in your body for the entire past week results in how you feel today. If you feel like you absolutely want to crush it today, that means you probably had a pretty clean week of eating, maybe not very much drinking. If you feel like, oh, oh, I can hardly get through today, I want you to go back and write down what you had for seven days in your diet. Because changing your diet is one of these little hacks that can quickly change your motivation.
I hope that this gets you excited if you are feeling really crappy right now, because there's always something that I know that I can change that I'm avoiding or I'm pretending not to know. Like right now I know I haven't eaten that great for the past two days and I'm like kicking myself because I don't feel super motivated. And I'm like, okay, well, I know what I can do. I know how I can feel better. I know how I can get more dopamine and serotonin, because that's all it is at the end of the day, guys, like, there is so many things that we can do to improve our dopamine and serotonin, which means you might only be three to four days away from waking up feeling excited about your life.
That's motivating, that is not long. Three to four days away of changes. And also you're running off of high octane dopamine again. So that's the second thing. Check on changing your diet. The third thing, this might be a little more macro, but this could be a wake up call for a lot of you, is maybe it's time to change your goal. If you're not feeling motivated, if you're not feeling like you want to run through a wall every single day, it's time to change your goal. I can't tell you what it's done for me building Frello, the fintech app that we're about to launch. That goal, that size of a goal, the size of the team I'm working with, the caliber of the team member, makes me wake up ready to run through a wall every single day. But then on the other side of my life, my second full time job, so to speak, is my personal brand. And let me tell you where I have not been motivated. I have not been motivated in my podcast for quite some time. I have not been motivated in my social media for quite some time. I have not been motivated in the personal brand for quite some time. It's taken a distant second place to Frello. And not because there's not enough fuel left. No, we create our own energy, as Brendan always says, is because I haven't been excited enough with any kind of targets or goals within it to be fueled by. And so I had this big session yesterday where I'm radically going to change the podcast over the next few months. You guys, I'll bring you along for the ride. Don't worry. I'm not just gonna jump out of the closet and surprise you. Ah, here's a new podcast. But I'm gonna radically change everything from the format to the branding to the message to everything else over the next few months. And then that's gonna trickle down into changing my social media, and that's gonna trickle down into changing the brand, which is gonna trick even changing some of our offerings or tweaking some of our offerings. And that excites me. Lori, what was I like yesterday when I'm like at the end of that session?
It's so funny because it started, like, not great. And I think that everything good kind of starts from a realization of this is not great. Like, we're not loving this. And you were so excited, so motivated. I feel motivated and excited because you're excited about something. And it was. It just took really asking yourself, what would be more fun than this? Like, what would make you want to create this content for people?
I love that. So those are the three things. If you're not feeling motivated, guys, it's really.
Don't be afraid to switch things up. Don't be afraid to flip things on their head.
Yep, yep. So those three things, just as a quick recap, change your environment. Control what you can control. Tons of small changes in your environment make a big, big difference. Change your diet. Just a few days of changing your diet will change how you feel, fueled or not, and maybe a little bit more macro. It's time to examine and change those goals. By the way, if you want to change your environment, one of the best opportunities you have right in front of you for one of you, either for one couple or for one individual, is grabbing that last spot. Coming to Italy with us in October, we are going in the most first class of ways you could ever imagine. Opportunities that you can't get on your own, even if you could pay for them. For example, like private tours of the Duomo before it opens, dinner with the Ferragamos. You know, the founding family, the famous fashion brand and a private tour of their headquarters. We're talking like once in a lifetime experiences and the people going are all incredibly high performing entrepreneurs. This can be 25% masterminding, 75% purely experiential in a way that you cannot even put together on your own. If you want that last room, that last spot, do one of two things. Either go right now to Chrisharder me Italy and grab that last spot Chrisharder me Italy or DM1 of us and ask us questions about it. We're even willing to jump on the phone real quick, make sure that you're a good fit and then help get you that very last spot. So can't wait to see who comes to Italy with us in October. ChrisHarter me Italy, all the details are there. In the meantime, maybe it's time for you guys to change up your environment, change up your diet or change up your goals. Thanks for listening. Love and appreciate you.
We'll see you next week.
