Two people share stories about becoming indispensable at work by noticing what needs doing and just doing it. One's 16-year-old son reorganized his workplace without being asked. Small actions like cleaning and organizing make you valuable because most people wait for permission.
What is the market missing? What is the value you can bring to the market and just bring it. Don't ask for permission. My son asher, at age 16, his boss calls me up. He goes, I don't know what is up with your kid? I was like, oh, shit, what's going on? He goes, he's the only guy that notices things in the shop that need to be done. My crew have been here 15 years, have not thought to do. He reorganized these things. He came over here and cleaned this. He noticed the bathroom was dirty. He cleaned the bathroom.
That's what my dad did for me, Truly. And every job I had, it was like I did the craziest things. Like, I would move everything in the back room and scrub the floors, and they'd be like, what are you doing? Like, it was dirty.
Yes.
And it has paid off so much, I can't even tell you because I didn't graduate, didn't get a high school diploma. How am I where I'm at? It's truly because I was the most valuable person at every single job.
