How to Stop Taking The Easy Out and Follow Through On Your Goals

Lori Harder argues that real growth means choosing resistance over the easy exit. She uses a cycle-class story about spotting an exit sign to show how obvious escape routes are, then pushes back: stay, add difficulty, practice being the person you want to become.

If you don't get to practice who you say you are, you're not really that person. Choose the resistance. Choose the challenging rooms. Choose the thing that feels hard. Choose the path that makes you change. Hey, everyone, welcome back to the podcast. It's time for another quickie because there's always time to fit in inspiration.
And let me just tell you, I.
Am fitting this in right now because I am flying to Nashville first thing thing in the morning. Like a super early flight. I don't typically love that, but it's just how we had to roll. And I still have to pack. Have not even thought about it. Literally, I'm like, maybe I should pick out an outfit for stage. Thank God that I have some good stuff in there already. I'm telling you, I'm one of those people who, like is on the Revolve clothing site. And if I see a dress I like, I'll buy it knowing that I'm going to use it in the future. And this has saved me so many times, especially if you speak a lot or you have a lot of event, because I just, I can't be the person who goes in shops, like, right before. It does not work for me. But I'm so excited and I am absolutely cutting it really, really short. But thankfully I went to a cycle class this morning. So you guys know that if you listen to me, like, the rhythm of, like, running cycle class, like, it just blows my mind, like, wide open. Like, I get so many different downloads. But still in the packing game, you guys, the first thing I packed was my glossy because I tend to get bloated on flights and I'm speaking on St Age the next day. So not just that, to obviously stay regular and stay feeling good. And I don't do super awesome traveling or I didn't do super awesome traveling, which was one of the main reasons that I wanted to create this product as well. And when we surveyed all of the women talking about what we wanted to put in this product, they were all going after the same thing as. As well as I was with feeling lighter in our bodies, not feeling bloated, staying regular, not having stomach issues and having great skin. Like, looking and feeling good because I'm about to be on a stage, I want to look good and I want to feel good because it really does impact your performance up there and how you do. If you don't feel good, if you feel like your clothes are too tight, if you feel like your clothes don't fit right, it really, really impacts you mentally. So you guys you can get 25% off with code Happy if you want to give it a try. But in cycle class today, I don't know, we were probably halfway through. It was like in the place where if you've ever been to a cycle class, like, they kind of turn the lights and turn on some super heartfelt, moving, inspiring, you can do it type of ballad, right? And that's exactly what was happening. We had just done a bunch of like super intense, like high intensity jumps and pushes. And all of a sudden you get to go into this totally other rhythm of your body where your brain's already super active from everything and all of a sudden they take away like all of the senses of the room. Because before that there's like lights and all this crazy movement and push ups and tap backs and all, all of these different things. And all of a sudden it's like a bit of sensory deprivation while your brain is already on overdrive. So what happens is the lights go down, this like, you know, inspiring ballad goes up, and it's kind of like, do whatever you want. It's like, okay, during the next three minutes, it's. It's all yours. Like, do whatever you want during this. And for me, it's like my think time. I don't slow down because I want to keep pushing myself during those songs because I know that's where I get my best thoughts and kind of push through. And so I'm having that moment, right? I'm like pedaling, pedaling, pedaling. And I'm looking around the room because it's dark, you can't see anything. And all of a sudden I look up and like the exit sign, for some reason, out of this class and no other classes, just kind of hits me. It's the only thing that's lit up in the room is this exit sign. And I was thinking to myself, how often the exit is available to us. Not just available, but it's lit up. And it's usually the thing that we can see the most clearly. Because when you're thinking of your big vision, you don't typically get a sign that says, it's this way, follow this path. But do you want to know what's always easy, accessible and lit up? The exit sign, no matter where you are. And as I kept thinking about what was going on in that class, you know, I've had goals recently where I want to get my cardio fitness back. I just really haven't been great with it. I kind of took a break on going to cycle classes and Keeping up with that. And I like to be in great shape in that regard. And I've just had a lot going on, a lot going on with the company. A lot of different travel. You know, the holidays hit, and I just kind of watched myself go to one class a week or every other week. And I hold myself to a higher standard, and I've kind of let that slip. And so during this class, there were so many different. Or during this song, actually, there were so many different thoughts that I was having because everything that I could need in order to accomplish those goals, physically and mentally. Because lately I've noticed that I've felt really addicted to my phone. Like, I've noticed, like, I'll go to pick it up, or I'll be, like, talking to Chris and I'll go to grab it. And I'm like, oh, my God. This addiction, this pattern of these multiple hits and, like, these dopamine hits and doing five things at once. Like, my attention is very skewed right now. Like, I have to get my attention back and dialed in. I'm noticing it while I'm working at a coffee shop. Like, I'll be in the middle of writing a super amazing email, and I'll have this urge, like, oh, I have to pick up my phone. Like, dopamine hit. So I'm trying to get my attention really focused. So there's that. There's the fitness. There's wanting to just really give myself mental think time to think about where I want to go with my company, what's next, what's the next product. You know, be the visionary and be the thinker. And this takes training. This takes mental training. This is meditation. This is staying focused on the task at hand. And so I'm in the room saying to myself, this room has everything for me in this room. It has the focus that I want because I could really focus on the task at hand and being so present in my body and not letting myself jump ahead, do a to do list or say, this is hard or boring or whatever. I can just focus and put all of that energy in. Into the pedals and into my body and into the goal. It helps me with my fitness goal. The class is so challenging for me right now that if I just work to, like, keep up and put that tension on the wheel, it's going to offer me everything that I need in order to become the fitness level that I want and to reach those goals. It offers me community. It literally offers me everything in this room. Now it is my choice if I Take it. It was my choice today that when he said, stay up, no matter what you do, if I stayed up or if I sat down, because honestly, today I did not get a front row seat. I had a third row seat, which means I can do whatever the fuck I want back there and no one is going to care because a lot of the people around me were sitting as well. And so if I wanted to sit, guess what? I wouldn't be feeling bad and I wouldn't make the people around me sit. But guess what I'm not going to do if I sit in the front row, which I'm working my way up to it again, guys, that's like another fitness level. But next two, three weeks, I hope to be there. If I sit in the front row, guess what I'm not going to do. I'm not going to sit down. Because that's just not what you do in the front row. You're expected to lead the class. It's something that is like an unspoken expectation of the front row is that you showed up to lead everyone else and you don't need to sit. Right. There are absolutely classes I need to sit, like right now, sometimes. Yes. Because I'm not there yet again. But in that room, I have the option to be able to choose any path that I want that will absolutely support my goal. So in order to support my goals, every time I show up in that room, number one, I don't exit. Right. There's always that opportunity. If this gets hard, that little sign is lit up. People will help you. You can leave. Nobody cares. Right? No judgment. Like, you can leave the class. That's an easy route. It's okay. It will be fully accepted. Like, no one's going to say anything to you. In fact, you'll probably get people who totally understand. And the main thing is that you stay. So number two, you just have to stay like you already won if you just stay. Number three, you have the opportunity to stay out of your seat for the class that's going to bring you to the next level. Opportunity four, you can put resistance on, which is going to give you everything that you need to become whatever type of athlete you want. Because I could sit in that class and sit down and put no resistance on the bike and pedal for the same 45 minutes that the woman next to me pumps up the resistance and doesn't sit in the seat. And after six weeks is a completely different human with completely different results. But we were in the same room, right next to each other, taking the same Class, when we show up in these rooms, we have to choose to not exit physically or emotionally. You have to commit because everything that you need is already in front of you. Every negative customer service email. You can choose to exit or be upset, or you can choose to stay and look at that resistance and say, thank you. Thank you. Because this resistance is turning me exactly into the person that I want to be. You can look at somebody treating you like shit, or someone cutting you off or someone being rude out in public. You can exit mentally and be like, f you. I'm over it. People suck. This world sucks. Everybody's so bad, things are getting bad. Things are so expensive. You know, whatever story it is that makes us exit our life, that makes us give the power away. Or we can say, thank you. Thank you for this resistance. Thank you for letting me practice my patience. Thank you for letting me grow a backbone. Thank you for letting me have compassion. Thank you for letting me really think about this person's life experience and that I actually feel for them. And if I walked a mile in their shoes, maybe I could understand what they're going through. Thank you for letting me exercise the person and the morals and the moral compass that I have today or that I tell people that I have. If you don't get to practice who you say you are, you're not really that person. So thank you for allowing me to get to practice today what I say I am.
