Mark Ottobre shows how to activate your lats before back training using a resistance band looped around your elbow. Pull your elbow toward your hip with your armpit pointed down. If you don't feel it in the lat, step back to increase tension.

This is a band lat activation. So what you're gonna do is you're gonna grab a band, you're gonna put it around something that's fairly high, and you're gonna loop it through like I've just done there. After you've looped it through, you're gonna put your elbow into the band, and your hand is just gonna be resting like that. Then your goal is to bring this elbow to this hip, and you wanna bring everything down. So think about pointing your armpits down to your hips as you do this. And what you should feel is your lats being really active in this and hold it. What we wanna do is we wanna really contract that lat as hard as we can. If you're not feeling it, take a little step back, that way you get a little more tension from the band. And when I do that, my lat wants to cramp up. So if you've got any trap or neck pain, if the trap is on, the lat can't be on. If the lat is on, the trap can't be on. So this is a really great one to really activate that lat. Give it a go at the start of your next back workout and let me know how you go.
