Being a Leader VS Being a Boss

Mark Ottobre breaks down the difference between leaders and bosses. Leaders create a shared vision and build culture; bosses issue orders and burn people out. For trainers, embodying the habits you preach matters more than what you say.

Hi, it's Mark Ottobre here for personaltrainermentoring.com, and in this video I'm going to be talking about the differences between being a leader versus being a boss. So fundamentally, I believe a leader is someone who inspires a vision somewhere where everyone is equally working towards a goal. A boss is really someone who just barks orders and wants people to do it a certain way. So while one, leadership builds culture and values and builds people up from the ground and propels the leader to higher levels, a boss, I believe, is always the one thinking about themselves trying to climb to a higher ring regardless of taking care of the people below them. So for sustainability in any organization, it is far better to be a leader, needless to say, than be a boss. Because a boss, you're going to have to replace the cogs. People are going to get burnt out and you're going to need to bring new people in to replace the function in that organization. With that said, it's going to happen as a leader too because people obviously do move on and grow and all that kind of stuff. However, it's the culture that you build as a leader that everyone is working towards and equal goal. Let me put it in another way. When you are a boss, people are buying or buying into a job, or people just want a job. If you're a boss, they want a job, you pay them for their time, over and done. When you're a leader, people are buying into your vision. They're not just coming to you, they just want to work for you because you're going to pay them. They're buying into your vision. They want to be a part of the vision. And as a result, being a part of the vision, it goes beyond money. Their personal lives get affected. They actually change their lives. They're happy to be a part of that organization. And from that, culture blossoms inside the organization, propels you ultimately forward as someone who is worth following, and you're able to get to that leadership position. So key points to leadership and where does it start? Well, it starts with you. It really starts with you being clear on your vision, on your mission, on your purpose. Where do you wanna be in life? And then having other people follow that and being truly integral to that. And as personal trainers, let's just say, for example, we see a lot of clients obviously who wanna lose weight and may have been struggling with this for years, right? Now if we are personal trainers and we get in front of our client and we don't train, we miss workouts, we eat the wrong things, we go out on the weekend and get blind drunk, how much wisdom or how much does that inspire the client who's struggling with this to be able to achieve that? Well, the answer is it doesn't inspire the client. It's that old saying, who you are speaks so loud that what you say cannot be heard. So who you are speaks so loud, what you say cannot be heard. So this is where if you are putting on just a good front, people are gonna just see through that. They're gonna see straight through that and realize that you're not the real deal and follow someone who does eat their own cooking, so to speak.
