A coach explains why food logs matter: if a client can't keep one, they're not ready for calorie or macro tracking. The inability to log isn't failure. It's information about what method will actually work for them.

So where to start with advice? Now we're getting into the practical stuff. Where to start with advice? Get them to keep a log. Get them to keep a log. The argument for this of not keeping a log, I've heard it so many times, is they will lie or not do it correctly. My counter argument is, well, that tells you something too. Example, if they can't do this, forget about calorie counting or macros. Turn whatever it is or is not presented to you as a teaching opportunity. You know, there's so many coaches and so many educationers or whatever you call them who teach you gotta do calories and you gotta do macros. Well, fact, fact, if a client isn't able to keep a log, then you can't count their macros, you can't count the calories. It's not going to work with them.
