Mark Ottobre shows three versions of the side plank: the standard elbow version, a harder one with your top leg raised for 5-10 reps, and an easier modification on your knees. The key is keeping your hips high and creating lateral distance to feel it in your obliques.

This is side plank, and I'm gonna show you one of 3 ways to do this. First, the standard and traditional way is you're gonna stack your elbow on top of your shoulder. I'm up like this, and I'm pulling away from the floor as hard as I can. So I wanna create as much gap from my hip to the floor as possible. So this is the side plank. To make this a little harder, what I can do is I can raise the leg, and we can do 5 to 10 reps like that. Now, if I wanna make it easier, if you look at these and these are too advanced, Bend the knees, come up all the way, and you're gonna do the side plank on your knees. And again, it's about creating as much distance. Think about creating distance laterally. So I'm sticking this hip up to the floor, and if you need to point, try and reach, you're gonna feel that all through your obliques. This is your side plank.
