Mark Ottobre breaks down standing calf raises: set the pad low for a full stretch, brace your abs tight, and move slowly, two seconds down and two seconds up. Skip the bounce. Control the weight with your calf, not momentum.

Standing calf raise. First thing is you want to set the pad so you get a full stretch on the calf raise. So you would— you want it on a little bit on the lower side. Getting under it, make sure you brace your abs all the way down. The way I like to think about this is you come down and then down again, and then as you come up, you come up and then you come up again, because you want that tempo of 2 seconds with a pause, up 2 seconds with a pause. Do it nice and controlled because we don't want to be relying on tendon strength. And this is standing calf raise.
