Mark Ottobre argues personal trainers lack business education in sales and marketing, then built a 7-figure studio by shifting from hourly sessions to 12-24 month outcome-based packages. His Sales Mastery program teaches trainers how to actually sell and retain clients.

The problem with personal training is that trainers are not taught business. Mark Ottobre, Enterprise Fitness. Mark Ottobre. Mark Ottobre. Mark Ottobre. In personal training, what's not taught is the fact that you need to sell a client. You need to sell them on the nutrition, you need to sell them on the training, and you need to sell them on the fact that they're going to pay you to deliver that service. So you need to learn sales and you need to learn marketing and you need to learn how to handle your numbers. But that's not taught in personal training school. And the people who are teaching it, they haven't been successful themselves. And they're teaching it out of some other industry's textbook, which doesn't apply to personal training because this is a service-based industry and it's very personal. You get very intimate and you understand your clients inside out, which is different than just asking for money from someone who's buying a box of soap or a coffee who doesn't really know your name. In personal training, you know their kids' names, their husband's names, their wife's names, so much personal details about them. So to then turn around and ask that person for money It can be quite challenging. So I remember my first week on the gym floor as an independent business owner. I sold a bunch of 5 and 10 packs to my personal training clients. And I think I made about $2,500. And I remember looking at the $2,500 going, what do I do with this? And it dawned on me that I had actually no idea what I was doing in business. I didn't know how to sell. I didn't know how to keep track of finances or record keep or any of that stuff, any idea about tax. And there was so much that I had to learn. And the problems that I faced there and for many years after was actually learning business. I wouldn't have been able to do anything that I've done if I didn't completely change the way I looked at PT. I went from focusing solely on the PT session, which is what so many trainers do, to solely focusing on the outcome. So instead of focusing on the hour that I spent with a client, I focused on what I was going to provide them in 12, 24, 12 months from now, and that revolutionized my business. I figured out a system that marries the results that clients want to get to sound business principles and practices that get you paid. I married those two things together and came up with a business model and a way to teach that to trainers that makes sense and has built me Enterprise Fitness, which is a 7-figure studio and has a team of 20 staff and have had Literally trainers from all over the world come and fly in to do education with us. There are two ways to learn anything in life: from your own mistakes, usually costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars and years and years of trial and error, or from other people's mistakes. That's exactly what Sales Mastery is. It's all the years of mistakes that I've made. It's all the hundreds of thousands of dollars that I've wasted, and it's all the courses that I've done combined into one program teaching you exactly how to sell personal training so that you can connect with the client, My goal, my vision for personal trainers is that they're able to make this a career. So they're able to buy their house, their car, go on that holiday, as well as loving coming to work every day, working with people that you get the opportunity to change their lives. So if that's you, I'd love to see you on the other side of this program.
