In this solo video, Maximus Mark enthusiastically reviews Randy Roach’s 562‑page book Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors, praising it as the most comprehensive documentation of physical culture. He highlights the author’s unique background (a blind Canadian), the book’s exhaustive coverage of bodybuilding, powerlifting, weightlifting, nutrition, regulatory history (ADA, USDA, FDA), and supplement development. Mark explains the detailed recounting of the historic feud between Joe Weider and Bob Hoffman and the division of bodybuilding into a pre‑1960s drug‑free era and a later drug‑enhanced era. He singles out a distinctive chapter on mind‑mapping that connects Stephen Hawking’s cognitive techniques to bodybuilding culture. The reviewer urges viewers to purchase the book (providing Amazon links), explore additional free interviews on randyroach.ca, and engage with his own blog MaximusMark.com for further resources and Q&A. He emphasizes that he receives no financial compensation and is motivated solely by a desire to promote valuable knowledge.
Chapters
Hi, it's Maximus Mark, and I've been wanting to review this book for ages. This book is awesome. I've been wanting to get on top of mountaintops and shout it out and tell people to go grab a copy of this book because that's how good it is. Just let me take off my glasses. The author of this book is Randy Roach. He's a Canadian fellow, and the most interesting part about this is he's actually blind. And this book is 562 pages, and apparently he's got another 2 coming, 2 volumes, and I think the second volume is like 700 pages. But the reason I like this book so much is because it's the only book to my knowledge that does a phenomenal phenomenal job at documenting what we would— well, the forgotten term physical culture. So it's the very history of bodybuilding, powerlifting, weightlifting, and how it actually came to be. The history of nutrition and the ADA and the USDA and the FDA and the history of supplements. And it's all contained in this book. I mean, there's so much information of where things actually came from. For me, I'm one of those people who really like to know where things started from, what the origin— where was the original source? And that's what this book provided for me. So It documents the whole feud between Joe Weider and Bob Hoffman, how they sold their supplements. There's a lot in here about the two eras. Basically, Randy refers to bodybuilding having two major eras. The era of drug-free, which was before the 1960s, and the era of drugs, which is a very interesting read of itself. Look, there's some absolutely awesome content in here. One chapter I specifically really appreciated that some people might not like as much, but was his chapter on mind mapping, and he kind of looked at Stephen Hawking's method of mind mapping and emotions, which was very, very good, but also related it to bodybuilding specifically and how the society was in that day. So I'd say grab a copy of this book. I get absolutely no financial whatever from this. I just wanted to make this video because I like to promote good stuff to people who follow me. Go on amazon.com, check it out. Another really good place to visit if you like Randy's work is go onto randyroach.ca. Go onto, it's his basically website. On there, he's got some actually free interviews, which I love listening to things in my car. So, I downloaded all of them and I listened to them at least 3 times each in my car because Randy is a wealth of knowledge. After reading this book, you'll really understand and appreciate that for what it is. So, yeah, Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors. There's Eugène Sandow, who the actual trophy of the Mr. Olympia is Eugène Sandow, and that's the dude. He's on the front cover. I believe you can get this in hardcover. So, I just went on Amazon and I got the cheaper version. Because I like to scribble all over my books and write notes and do all those type of things. So that's why I don't rent out books from the library. But anyway, go grab a copy of this book. Let me know what you think. Also grab those interviews as well. I posted them on Facebook a while ago. I'll put a link up on my blog, MaximusMark.com. Until then, ask me a question on MaximusMark.com. Just hit the Ask Mark button and I'll see you in the next video.
