Speaker B survived an alcoholic mother, family suicides, and drug addiction. Their mental trick: don't eliminate demons, shrink them by shifting perspective. When someone cuts you off in traffic, imagine their struggles and respond with compassion instead of anger.
You grow up as a kid who has an alcoholic mother.
Well, there was more there. We had suicide. Grandma killed herself. Auntie killed herself. Our dad was working a lot trying to support the family and he wasn't around that much as well. And then my sensei that my mom connected me into karate ended up hanging himself.
You've confronted multiple suicides, confronted alcoholism. You have your own drug addiction, multiple psychosis. Do you get rid of your demons or do you make them smaller?
Maybe smaller. You're constantly working on things. I'm constantly trying to remind myself and trying to shift my perception on many things. For example, a really simple thing that happens on a daily, you I might not be traveling well, some guy cuts me off and I'll be like, this guy, look at him, who does he think he is, get up his ass. Or I can take a step back, go, hang on, relax, he could have just lost his job, he could have just lost his brother, I don't know his story, I'm not going to take that on board as well, I'm going to have compassion for him and not have that egotistical what has he done to me reaction.
