The Telly Raise — The Shoulder Exercise Nobody Does Right

Mark Ottobre breaks down the Telly Raise, a shoulder exercise that targets the lateral deltoid but most people do wrong. Start with a hammer curl to 90 degrees, keep your elbows locked there, abduct your arms wide, then extend fully. Use light weight and move slow to keep tension on the side delts.

In this video, I'm going to be showing you the best shoulder exercise that you're not doing, breaking down the 4 main points to perfecting it. Now, this exercise comes with many names. It's a Tally Raise, a Poliquin Raise, named after Charles Poliquin, a Sarsev Raise, named after Milos Sarsev, and also my favorite, the way I like to call it, it's an L Raise to extend. Hi, my name is Mark Ottobre. I'm the owner and founder of Enterprise Fitness. I've trained thousands of people to head-turning results, hundreds of champion athletes, and even world leaders. Now that we've got the history out the way, we are going to demonstrate with Big K over here this exercise, which is sure to blast the lateral delts of your shoulders. So I'm going to get K to grab the dumbbells. Now to do this exercise, you are going to go fairly light. First thing is he is sitting up nice and tall. Now we're going to do a hammer curl, but only to 90 degrees. So come up there, that is perfect. Now this is point number 1, we want to be in this position. Now it is very, very important we do not come up too high. So if you come up too high, it's going to mess with the exercise. So we want to be at 90 degrees. Now we want to abduct our arms nice and high. You can see that, that is point number 2. Now in this position, up nice and tall for me, extend your arms out, extend your arms out nice and wide. Now you're going to come down slowly. Now that is how you do a perfect telly raise. Now I'm going to get you to do it the wrong way just so we can show the folks at home what the wrong way is. Come do it. Come up way too high. Now come up. Now you can see in this position, see how there's no load through that side delt? He's kind of coming up with like chicken arms, right? So even if you, you lower the wrist, do it again. And just what— this is probably one of the most common mistakes is people come up and they're here, right? You're here. So you can see in this angle here, there is no load through the side delt. So when you do that initial come up 90 degrees, really make sure that you are at 90 degrees. Now In this position, we abduct, abduct, abduct. You can see how much harder that is. Now, chest up. Now extend. I can feel these muscles shaking as he does this. Hold that position nice and wide. Now our side delts are working. They are firing. That's how we want to be doing it. 4 steps up 90 degrees, up, abduct nice and wide, extend your arms, lower slowly.
