The Truth About Calories (Not All Calories Are Equal)

Maximus Mark argues that calorie counting misses what matters: food quality and how your body responds. Calories were invented in Atwater's 1890 oven experiments and ignore that refined carbs spike insulin while whole foods signal satiety differently. His rule: if a caveman couldn't eat it, skip it.

Hi, it's Maximus Mark. And today I have a bit of a rant, maybe a little bit of a qualm to pick. My qualm to pick is with calories in versus calories out. Now, why do I pick this qualm? Well, simply because it's annoying that it won't go away. I mean, calories do play a part of the nutrition factor. However, to say it's the whole story is, well, ridiculous. Because calories started way back in 1890 by a fellow by the name of Atwater who founded a caloric oven. Now, what Atwater did was he put certain foods inside this caloric oven. And he basically measured the heat energy of those foods and seeing how much heat needed to be generated to turn them to ash. You know, what he found was, you know, carbohydrates had 4 calories per gram and fats had 9 calories per gram and proteins had 5 calories per gram. I mean, all that information can be useful when applied in the right manner. However, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to actually be healthy, Calories are a very small part of the picture. What is a much more intelligent question to ask is, where am I actually getting those calories from? For example, now, if you have 2,000 calories and you get those calories from white, refined, sugary, processed, genetically modified, pesticide-laden types of foods, your physique and your body and your health is going to be in a very different state than if you get those foods from natural foods that have been hunted, fished, gathered, and plucked, that are organic and full full of vitamins and nutrition, okay? It's going to be a very different story. The other factor that calories don't take into consideration is the communication that food has with our body. Now, I'm going to say that again because it's a very important concept for you to understand. Food communicates with our body in a very different way, in very different ways. For example, if you have high amounts of carbohydrates, sugary carbohydrates, that signals blood sugar to be secrete, to basically rise, and as a result of that, insulin is secreted to bring their blood sugar levels down. That's a very different communication to say if you're going to have fats, which, you know, if you ate pure fat, say something like butter, has virtually no impact on insulin whatsoever. So it does have a very different communication, and that's what we're really looking at. I mean, if you want to have a healthy body and live a healthy lifestyle, look at the foods you're eating. I mean, these things like low-fat muffins and, you know, low-calorie bars and all these type of things, their rubbish. Eat things that are hunted, fished, gathered, and plucked. The easiest way to think about food is just ask this very simple question. If I was a caveman or woman, would I have access to this food? If the answer is no, well, don't have it. If the answer is yes, by all means. As I said, I hope you enjoy this video.
