B2B Events: When you put the effort upfront, it really pays off in word of mouth

Two event organizers explain why investing heavily upfront in outreach and content quality beats spending on promotion later. The payoff: word-of-mouth, better retention, and free amplification from community leaders.

Things we prioritise cost us more money, they cost us more attention and time. It's very intentional, it's very deliberate, and it's definitely more work. I would say it pays off because we're proud of what we do and it pays off in terms of word of mouth. And obviously we all know that it's better to retain companies and retain people than have to go out anew every time because the last thing you put out actually wasn't very good. So it's certainly worth the effort. But you know, the outreach we did at the beginning when we were founding the Call for Proposals, and that is a lot of work. It's not effortless.
Yeah, no. What I want to highlight again in terms of effortless is many times when organizers are promoting any product, so say virtual event or promoting a conference, the thought is, what are we going to do with media partners? What work are we going to do with influencers? Oh, let's create something that we're going to put forward to this influencer so that they can kind of amplify the message. That requires effort and that requires a lot of stuff. You guys don't go out and say to the owners of those communities or those slack groups, hey, do you mind creating a channel? We've got all this content that we know we want to put forward. They just basically say, I value what lead does. They're not asking me about anything. But this content is worth the time of my audience or my people. So effortless in the sense that I'm going to take this and I'm going to basically amplify the message because I think it's good and I'm going to. I watch this video. No one's asking me to forward the video to anyone. I'm going to actually gonna send this out to my one and a half thousand employees or my live dev teams to see. You've got to watch this. You see what I'm saying?
It's where you choose to put the effort in, isn't it?
Exactly.
Foundations or you can choose to put the effort in. In the promotion.
So it's at the tail end of the promotion. But I think that, like when you put the effort at the very beginning in the key pillars, when you have that strong belief that so your effort, you put in just simply by saying, we're going to create top content. If it's not top content, we're going to do it.
