In this solo episode of the Marketing Muscle Up Podcast, host Richard Turney (also known as Richard Toutounji) shares his personal journey from buying a fitness studio at 17½ years old to becoming a marketing mentor for health, fitness, and wellness studio owners. He explains how QR codes, once a failed technology, have made a comeback thanks to native camera support on smartphones. Turney walks listeners through a step‑by‑step process for creating QR codes using the free tool qr-code-generator.com, and then outlines a variety of practical, low‑cost ways to embed those codes in local‑area marketing: on signs, flyers, billboards, in‑gym displays, partner locations, and even internal staff communications. He highlights specific use cases such as directing customers to Google or Facebook review pages, membership portals, landing pages, and staff resources, emphasizing front‑and‑center placement to match users’ trained scanning habits. The episode concludes with a promotional call‑to‑action inviting listeners to book a free 15‑minute “Marketing Muscle Up” strategy call through commarketing.com.au, where a team of six marketing coaches can provide tailored advice for Instagram, Facebook, and broader growth strategies.

Really simple, fast, efficient that you can use. You know that obviously has had a massive comeback, and that's QR codes. Welcome back. It's Richard Turney here from the Marketing Muscle Up Podcast Show. Really excited to be here today. You know what's my story? What's my background? Well, I purchased a fitness studio at 17 and a half years. My plan was. A lot of hard work, a lot of mornings, early mornings, late nights. I, um, my marketing plan was an A-frame sign that I purchased, uh, one at the front of the studio, one in the back of the studio, and, um, a lot of hope marketing. I now spend all my time helping health and fitness wellness studio owners how to become their own version of a marketing ninja, which I believe is the only way to grow your health and fitness studio, uh, making sure you don't outsource things where you don't need to and really focus on the growth, the organic growth that you can actually have in your own marketing. And that's what we do, and that's what we've been doing the last 10 years at ComMarketing. Now, today's show, I want to talk about something really simple, fast, efficient that you can use that obviously has been, you know, that obviously has had a massive comeback, and that's QR codes. QR codes, you haven't known them? Well, it's impossible for you not to know them now. We used QR codes all through COVID, as everybody can remember. You remember you had to scan yourself in. You maybe still be doing that somewhere. Scan yourself in and check yourself in. Now restaurants use them to scan their menus. I went there, went to a restaurant last night. It's like, yep, just scan the menu. So we're all expected to know how to use this. And so, you know, back, going back when these came out, oh, I'm not sure when, maybe that was 7 years ago they came out and People thought they were going to be the biggest thing in the world, that like they were going to be the thing. The QR codes was going to literally change things. And it didn't actually happen. It totally flopped. QR codes never worked. Nobody used them. Who would use them? Who are you going to pick up your phone? And you had to actually have an app. You had to download an app to then scan it. So it didn't work from the camera. That's probably why they were a flop. But now they literally can work from your camera. You don't have to have an app. And that's the difference. So they're easy. recognizable from a phone. And because we've been trained with them for so long, over 2 years, I want to remind you how you can use them in your local area marketing. So I've been seeing our amazing clients, we call them marketing ninjas, use them in their marketing, local area marketing. So for example, if you have a, you know, any kind of marketing that you want to put visually, so it could be a flyer, it could be a sign, Anything at all, a QR code is perfect for that. Now, how do you make it work? I'm not the government. I don't know how to do it, you're saying. Well, that's very simple. All you have to do is really just go to Google and type in QR code. There is one site in particular, and this is not the only site you can use by far. This is the site that I use. However, there is 1,000 sites. qr-code-generator.com. qr-code-generator.com. All you do is you just type in the location that you want to send somebody. So that can be a location of a Facebook group, a landing page, a website, anything at all that is online. You can type in that location, anything at all. We use it for our backend membership portal, anything at all. Wherever your imagination goes, you literally can use that QR code. So all you do is you type it in. And then what you do, you hit submit, and in literally 1 second, it's going to give you a QR code, and you can use that QR code. So you just take that and you can use that QR code. You download it and you can use that QR code wherever you want to use it. It doesn't expire. You don't pay for it. It's really, really that simple. So the lesson here is take what's been working through COVID and make sure you use it on your marketing. So I would love to see these QR codes front and center. If you have a sign that you're going to put anywhere in your facility, in coffee shops, in partners, have the QR code there. Every single piece of marketing, put the QR code there front, center, in the top, not just in the corner, really straight away. Why? Because people are trained to do that. If you want to get anybody to give you Google reviews, very simple. Say, guys, when you leave the facility, your gym, have a picture there. You want to give me a Google review, scan there. So it really works really well locally. If you have an online business, it doesn't work as effective, but of course it can work. You can send a QR code as an email. You can put on your social media. And so start to use QR codes where people have their phones out, but they're not really online. And that's in, you know, out and about places, and that's in the gym studio location that everybody has their phones now. They've been trained to have their phones. So think about where you can use QR codes— in flyers, local area marketing, any leaflet drops you do, billboards, any marketing internally inside the gym or outside the gym, asking people for reviews, anything like that. And that can go straight to your Facebook or Google review. You can have a Facebook one, a Google review, really simple. Anything at all like that is super simple. You can even use it internally for your team or your staff to send them to a direct place. And it's great for, you know, not just older clients, but it's great for anybody who doesn't want to type in their phone. So simple QR codes, use them, use them everywhere you can go. And when you can do that, you can really start to grow your business by not having to explain to people where to go. So QR codes, pretty simple. qr-code-generator.com. Go and check it out. Go and use it. Change all your marketing around it. Redo your signs with the QR codes. And let's see how that can help you grow your health and wellness business.
