James Blackwell (speaker) recommends the book Principles by Ray Dalio, highlighting Dalio's background as a hedge-fund founder who built a major firm from modest beginnings. Blackwell emphasizes the book's accessibility (can be read chapter-by-chapter), and singles out themes he found valuable: building company culture, developing hiring systems (hiring stars vs generalists), and creating leaders. He places the book highly on his shelf and recommends grabbing chapters as needed.
Chapters
Hi everyone, my name is James Blackwell. So today I wanted to share my book of the week. I'm an avid reader, as some of you already know. So this week's book recommendation is Principles by Ray Dalio. So Ray Dalio is a head hedge fund investor. I think he started the business pretty much from his two bedroom apartment in New York and grew it to pretty much one of the biggest hedge funds in the world. So he's a multi billionaire. But what I liked about this book, it was quite an easy read because he's got quite a few chapters. I love just diving into a book and just picking a chapter. So he was talking around getting culture right, which was quite an interesting chapter on how to grow a team and how to hire as well. So build and evolve your hiring machine. So he was talking around hiring a player, talent and the difference in the mentality of hiring superstars as opposed to just your generals. And he goes through the different ways of creating leaders around the business as well. So he talks around that. I think in terms of the book itself, I thought was quite an easy read just to dive in at any part. And he had some like, quite good captions of what his beliefs were within business. So I definitely recommend this book. It's definitely something that sits high on my bookshelf even if I just wanted to grab a chapter. So, yeah, so Principles by Ray Dalio is my book recommendation for this week.
