Setting goals without a plan is a guaranteed way to fail

Joshua Nelson says agencies fail because they set revenue targets without breaking them into monthly goals, close ratios, and weekly metrics. He reverse-engineers KPIs to turn vague targets into concrete actions, then tracks them weekly with accountability built in.

The biggest mistake most agencies make when it comes to setting their goals and kind of mapping out their year ahead is that they'll set a goal, right? Okay, here's where I want to be. I want to have this amount of clients. I want to have this amount of recurring revenue. I want to get to 7 figures or whatever the number is, and they stop there. And that's a recipe for failure because if you just set a goal and you don't build a plan, you're not going to accomplish anything. And so one of the most important things you can do is reverse engineer the KPIs. Yes, if that's the goal, let's break it down by month, let's break it down by quarter, and let's figure out what are the activities that are going to be required in order to bring that into reality. And what we're going to be doing on our 2026 Agency Growth Planning Workshop is taking you through a couple of these types of exercises to get clear. Well, if that's the goal, what's our close ratio? Like, how many clients are we closing on a monthly basis? And then from there, what would we need to accomplish from an appointment strategy session objective to bring that into reality? And then once we've got those KPIs, we have to make sure that we track it and we put some tracking mechanisms in place so we know, okay, I got to get 20 strategy sessions every single month. How am I doing week 1, week 2, week Week 4. What you have to make sure you do is you put a little bit of accountability behind it. And that's what we're gonna be doing on this workshop. If you'd like to join us where we can walk you through this process, we can give you the exercises, we can give you the worksheets, and we can give you the proven plan that's helped over 176 other agencies get to 7 figures, comment 2026 here in the comments and I get you all the details. Let's make 2026 amazing. Yeah.
