An agency owner explains why a flat monthly retainer works better than project fees. His first agency struggled with unpredictable cash flow until he switched to all-inclusive pricing. At his later company, clients pay $2,500 a month for website build, SEO, and tracking, which aligned revenue with growth and made billing transparent.

What we found works best for pricing in the agency space is to have a set monthly fee. This is the entire suite of services that we're gonna bring to the table. This is what you can expect and go straight into that consistent monthly fee. My first agency was a web design company, and so I would charge a, an upfront fee and then a low monthly fee, and it really never monetized. It was very hard to get consistent, predictable income. When I launched Click Incorporated, which became Plumbing and HVAC SEO, we said, look, the website is just a piece of your overall strategy, right? What you want is growth. And so in order to bring that growth, we're gonna have to build a website. We're going to have to optimize it for the search engines. We're going to have to put tracking and stuff in place. And so rather than charging this upfront fee and this random billing, it's like, we're going to charge you this $2,500 per month. We're going to do all of that and you're going to get to pay that as long as it makes financial sense. And I found that that consistent, very logical explanation of pricing tends to work well for agency clients.
