EP440: 13 Years Sober - 13 Life Lessons Sobriety Taught Me About Leadership, Legacy, & Owning Who the F*ck You Are

Okay, this is the monologue before the rest of the episode. Thirteen years ago today, I woke up at rock bottom. And I decided that day that it was the last time that alcohol and all sorts of other things would get the best of me. Thirteen years later, it hasn't touched me once. But let me tell you, the real victory isn't saying no to people, places, things, alcohol. The real victory is in saying yes to a life with no more hiding, no more numbing, no more secrets, and no more half living. This isn't just about sobriety. This is about freedom, about personal power, about a life of integrity. And today, I want to give you 13 lessons, one for every year I've been sober that can change the way you lead, the way that you love, and especially the way that you live. Whether you've ever struggled with alcohol or not, I am fully aware that people, places, and things are some of the things that we use to deal with life. These 13 truths will help you sharpen your edge. Let's go. Hey, hey. And welcome to the Enneagram Edge. I'm your host, Tracy o', Malley, Enneagram expert leadership coach, recovering control freak, and your personal translator for the shit you keep repeating but don't totally understand yet. Now, if you're new here, buckle up. This is absolutely not another fluffy Enneagram podcast where we talk about how sweet it is to be an Enneagram, too, and bake cookies for your friends. No, this is the real deal. This show is about using the Enneagram as a tool for transformation, not just information and definitely not some party trick. Because knowing your type is cute, but embodying your highest expression, that is where your edge is. Every week, I'm bringing you the truth behind the types and the hype. How to stop self sabotaging, lead like a damn legend, and actually understand the people in your life without wanting to scream into a pillow. Or if you're an Enneagram, ain't like me not throat punch someone. We'll talk about leadership, relationships, business, healing, high performance, and why couples therapy isn't working. But fully understanding your Enneagram blueprint might just save your marriage. I'll drop solo episodes behind the curtain coaching, and the occasional rant when someone calls the Enneagram just a personality test. So if you're ready to stop playing small and start showing up with unshakable clarity, confidence, and compassion for yourself and others, this is your space. You've got an edge. Now let's use it.

Hello, and welcome back to another episode of the Enneagram edge. I'm your host, Tracy Omelly, and it's a special day today. You know, I'm not somebody who used to love my birthday. There's all sorts of reasons for that that I'll share at another time. However, this day is a very, very special one to me and my family. It is the day that I decided that without question, I would no longer use people, places, things specifically at the time, alcohol and a tag teaming eating disorder to deal, cope with any part of life again. And you know, the story about that day is really powerful. But when I walked into sobriety, I thought, you know, like, gosh, I only know how to use things to, to deal. So I felt like I was going to be restricted. I knew, like I could see the bigger vision of what God had for my life very clearly. However, I did not know what that looked like. I. I knew my life was about to shrink, or I thought it was. I thought maybe I would lose my fun, my freedom, my edge. It turns out actually that sobriety opened up the calling that was on my life. It allowed me to be in the most authentic version of myself that I had been craving since I was a little girl. It was the gateway to all of it. And it stripped away the bullshit. It forced me to face myself and it rebuilt me into someone I never thought I'd get to be. A woman, fully awake, fully alive, and fully leading my life on my terms. So let's get into that, right? Thirteen years, 13 lessons. But before I do, I mean, when I. I want to take you back to. It was very powerful. The day that I do celebrate as my sober date wasn't my first one. My first one was actually 111 days before that. I knew that my coping problem was getting the best of me. And I had just had a conversation with my dad that Father's Day about two weeks into it. And it was the most honest conversation I'd ever had with him. You know, I had a pretty dysfunctional codependent relationship with my dad. Although we had a really good relationship in a lot of ways, there was a lot of dysfunction. I always felt like I had to perform to earn his love. Not that that was ever said, but it was implied and that's how I translated it. And that Father's Day, I was really open and vulnerable and honest. And he was absolutely beautiful. You know, he was a tough Enneagram 8. And he showed that softer side, you know, Enneagram 8 and growth can look like a 2. And he, he modeled that that day and ironically, seven days later after that conversation, my dad was diagnosed in late stage, can't do anything about it, cancer. And 12 days after that, he had passed away. And I didn't drink or use substances at all during his entire death. Funeral. Going back home to the dysfunctional family that I originate from, a very passionate, beautiful and dysfunctional bunch. You know, there were things like my sister, you know, picking a fight with me at my dad's funeral, buying drugs at my dad's funeral. A lot of dysfunction that I went back to and I didn't use during that time. And, and I got glimpses of what a life sober could give me during that time. I was in a dysfunctional relationship at the time though. And you know, my codependent pattern that I had with my father carried into my romantic relationships and he was, to his own admitted admittance, was a high functioning alcoholic himself. And I felt like I had to perform in order to earn his love too. And I heard in, in recovery that, you know, you have to kind of change the playground you play in. And I thought I could do things different, of course. Stubborn. But anyway, we were in that relationship and for the 111 days that I had had, his birthday came at this mark and we decided to go to Vegas for his birthday to see Garth Brooks and it would be amazing. And we were driving there and he came out of the Circle K gas station with two bottles of schnapps, little bottles, the little shooters in his hand, and said, what's one weekend gonna do? And I was like, you know, you're right. You know, that's the thing about addiction is it's cunning, baffling and powerful and it will lie to you and it will get you at your weakest moments. They say it's doing push ups when you're not actively using. Whatever addiction it is, it could be love, could be relationships. Codependency is the hardest addiction to break. And I was like, you're right. And day one, no problem. Day two, no problem. So I was like, see, I don't really have a problem. And then day three happened and day three happened where it escalated very, very quickly. So much so I'll bring you to the end of the story that I woke up after we change flights. Don't even remember that. Woke up, looked at him, saw the, the look in his face and knew that some stuff I had either said or done was unrepairable. And he left me there. And of course, like a good codependent, I went chasing after him and Got into the cab that he had hailed. And in that cab, in the first few minutes, he annihilated me with shame. I knew I had hurt him. You know, I'm not justifying what he did or said to me, but you know, he's human after all, and hurt will make you do that. And the shame became so overwhelmin the cycle that I had continued whooped me up in the face and I had known enough in 111 days of sobriety and I had, you know, attended some AA meetings and, and tasted what that looked like and felt like, and I threw it all out the window. And so much so that I jumped out of that moving cab on Las Vegas Boulevard and rolled on out right in front of the Bellagio in the Cosmopolitan. And I sat on that curb and I felt God in me saying, this is where this ends. Not your life, but this is where this ends. It's time to surrender. And so I made a phone call to a friend of mine who had about four years of sobriety. I said, I'm in trouble. And she goes, I know he already called me. And I said, I'm ready to make this stop, you know. And so I decided that that was going to be the day. And it was, it was September 23rd of 2030 or 2012. And although I had made the decision and went to meetings and all the things, I was still in that dysfunctional relationship a little bit. Even I was trying to hold on to it. Even though he had packed a bag and moved out and all the things and, and I got that. But for the next three weeks, I, I took away the addiction, you know, the, the substance, but I still was left with me. And this is the important part about sobriety and sweat. You can take away the, the person placer thing, right? But if you don't have coping mechanisms that are healthy and honorable and in, in integrity, it's just a matter of time. And that's why only 2%.

At the three week mark. I had lost 25 pounds in that short period of time. I had lots of thoughts of not being here. And if it wasn't for, you know, being a mom to the most beautiful, beautiful children and the greatest gifts of my lifetime, I don't know if I would still be here on that day. But I felt God in my heart and in my life. And I made the decision that day that I could not do this alone. I had the toolbox that I was taught, told and modeled and we do what we our taught, told and model not what we necessarily want. And I needed a new toolbox. And that's when I checked myself into rehab. And on day one, I heard this statistic from my therapist, Nancy. You've heard about her before. She's the one who introduced me to the Enneagram. And she said only about 2% of you are going to make it. You know, and it pissed me off because A, we don't hear enough stories about those that do. And two, I was going to be the 2% in that room. And I declared it that day. And you know, 13 years later, I don't miss the. The substance I have not tackled or I have not actively operated in either of the eating disorders that had a stronghold on me. Codependency, I have to watch. It's a blind spot for all of us. It's a lot of what the work I do entails because it is an addiction that is very sneaky. It's, it's polished, it's pretty. It's cloaked in love and honor and service. But it's, you know, it's motivated sometimes a lot in that. That need to feel something other than ourselves. Right? And so much has happened in 13 years. I have built solid businesses. I've been abundantly blessed financially in the hard work that I've done, not just in sobriety, but in leading others. I've built sales organizations and a thriving coaching practice that is well regarded and highly referred. And I have credibility and trust and respect in the marketplace. My name is dropped in room, some of the most powerful rooms in the world and in with the titans of Google and Facebook and John Deere and many, many other rooms. And I'm really, really proud of that. But what I'm most proud of is the decision I made on September 23, 2012. And all of that is possible because of that decision and my commitment to that every single day. So I thought I'd share the 13 lessons that sobriety has taught me. And like I said, whether or not you struggle with a substance or cod, I guarantee there's something that you use in your life to feel or not to feel, to find your worth that maybe is outside of yourself. And all of this will apply to that. So number one is radical, compassionate honesty cuts way faster than any kind of person, place or thing can. Sobriety forced me to stop lying to myself, to others, to the world. And here's the thing. The truth can be sharp, right? That's why that compassionate. I'm putting an asterisk. Compassionate, radical, honesty. But it, it does heal. When you stop bullshitting yourself, you can finally lead yourself. And also, it's one thing to stop bullshitting yourself, but sometimes we beat ourselves up with shame when we stop bullshitting ourselves. When we look through the lens of how that kind of came to fruition, that's where the compassion can come in. Number two. Discomfort is a compass, not a curse. Every craving, every restless night, every off, awkward coffee date, sober, it all taught me that discomfort is not here to punish me. It's here to point me and you forward to the next level. It's just like. And. And I use this analogy a lot. You know, we have to stress out our muscles and make them uncomfortable in order for them to grow. And we are no different. We have to experience that resistance, that discomfort. And most of us bail or we say, like, it's not in alignment, or we make excuses or we justify our. Which will lead you back to what? Compassionately recognizing what's happening. Right? And that's why I love the Enneagram, too. Because the compass, you can look at what's making you uncomfortable right now, and I guarantee it's your growth number on the Enneagram. So when you understand that it's not, doesn't mean you're going to love the discomfort, the disruption, or the resistance. However, you will grow from it. Just lean in. Number three. You don't need numbing when you're living in alignment. You know, I used to drink. Not because I was physically addicted to it. You know, I'm one of the beautiful cases that didn't have the physical addiction. I didn't go through withdrawals. And that's why it went on as long as it did, because I could quit easily for many, many days. However, when I did use it, it was to take that edge off a little bit and go over the edge. I didn't. I could not. And. And I'm just being real with you. Alcohol serves no good in any of our lives, period. End of story. And that's not me on the high horse. It's just true. It robs us of energy, clarity, all the things. But there were times that I was living in that intensity that an enneagram 8 does. So much that, like, God, how do I release any of this pressure in a healthy way? And I didn't have. I mean, I loved exercise and sports and things. Like, I loved sex and love and all the things, but, like, it can't access all that all the time, right? And so alcohol was one of the. The tools that was modeled for me. And food, too. As a little girl, like, I remember very distinctly distinctively that. And I. I couldn't stand sometimes that gap between who I was and who I wanted to be. And that edge, that intensity and that frustration of, like, how do I get there? How do I get there? But now that gap is gone. Like, I live in this every single day. And alignment is the only buzz that I really love now. Like, when I am surrendered. Because it takes that discomfort, that surrender, that divine knowing, no matter how long it takes, that alignment integrity is the highest high of a lifetime. Let me tell you, Number four, discipline creates freedom, not restriction. Enneagram Eights don't like to be controlled by the way. And not deciding to be sober at first is like, oh, my gosh, I feel so controlled by this. And a lot of people like myself might think some of that discipline can feel like a prison, and it's not that. Discipline is what lets me have choices and space and freedom. And if you want freedom, build. Build some structure, right? Gotta have a little gray area for sure, because that's life. And life is not built on a spreadsheet all the time. However, you know, one day at a time is really, really important. And for some of you, it might be one minute, one second at a time. There have been times over the last 13 years, like, I can barely catch my breath. Like, one moment at a time, one moment at a time. And you, you will get through this. And this too will pass. The good stuff, the hard stuff, all of it. Number five. This is probably one of my most important lessons and favorite ones to guide others to is. Shame dies when it's dragged out into the light. We stay as sick and as stuck as our secrets. I've done keynotes over the last 10, 11 years about smashing the masks and, you know, the secrets that I thought would bury me, they lost their power the second I spoke them out loud. Now, it doesn't mean we have to spew them all out on social media. I did it in safe, quiet spaces and trenches that no one saw. A lot of that a lot of the time. And then as my work evolved, you know, I share a lot with my clients so that they know I do understand, and I've been through a lot. Vulnerability doesn't weaken you. And that is the biggest lesson as this enneagram8. Like, I used to feel like vulnerability was weakness. And it actually is where you are cloaked in the armor of a beautiful, loving God. And it makes you bulletproof and untouchable. Right? It doesn't mean you're not going to get knocked on your ass. However, there is nothing, nothing anybody can say about me that can take me down. Now, people have tried. They lie, you know, and people feel really insecure when you are shining so bright in your true authentic light. And the cool thing about that is, you know any of my secrets that I'm have, am worried about, people know. And so anything that is said about me that isn't true, like, I don't even feel the need to defend it because, like, all right, don't want to be around that karmic debt when that gets paid. Number six, your edge comes from your scars, not necessarily the image that you put out into the world. And I spent years, years trying to look so strong. And I am, I am strong. But usually when we have to flex or lead with that bravado, it's usually kind of coming from an insecure, fearful, feeling out of control place, right? I spent years doing that. And the moments that made me a legend aren't the polished ones, aren't the like flexing in the front of a room or flexing in my home. They were the scars, the breakdowns, the I got my ass kicked and handed to me and got back up. And let me tell you, over the last 13 years, that has happened over and over and over again. But that's what champions do. That's what legends do. Number seven, self leadership is the highest form of leadership, and this is huge. You can't guide a team, a family, or a movement, a calling if you can't guide yourself. Seriously, Sobriety made me call my own before anyone else could. And again, this is a big beauty. This is one of the biggest, beautiful things that I do with my work with the Enneagram is I give you this atlas so that self leadership is a lot more understandable. You have a framework attached to, to it that helps guide you and lead yourself. You know, my goal is not to have to need me your whole life. That's codependency, right? Like I want to empower and give you the tools and the confidence that you have everything you need within yourself to lead yourself so that you can lead others. Your family, your clients, your profession, the calling that's on your life. Self leadership is the highest form of leadership. Number eight, numbing never fixes anything, especially not the pattern, right? You can put down the drink, you can put down the insert whatever it is, the, the food, the person, the dopamine rush of building businesses, the exercise, addiction, the sex, the love, all of it. You can put any of that Down. But if you don't address the wiring that's happening underneath, not just your own soul wiring and also the environmental wiring that you have experienced over however long you've been here and gifted this, this life, you'll just find another thing to replace it, right? The overworking, the scrolling, the shopping, the people pleasing, the building business, the shiny objects, the, the friendships, the getting in the rooms. Like all the things sobriety taught me to pull it all up by the root. And when I know where the roots kind of take form and, and really grab a hold of things, I don't have to numb any of it out. Even when it's really uncomfortable, I have to watch it, you know, because I can do things that are highly acceptable and highly rooted, regarded, right? But when you understand the come from, you can call yourself compassionately on your own. Number nine, real connection requires real presence. You can't do that when you're numbing out, period. It's so funny, you know, I'm known for the Irish duck out, the Irish goodbye. More so in my sober life than I ever did in my drinking career, right? And it was, you know, it's taught, it's told that the Irish goodbye is like, because the Irish, like when we get to drinking, like when we're done, we're done and we need to get the hell out of there, right? Or the goodbyes take forever so we kind of just duck out. Ironically, I never did that when I was drinking. I only do the Irish goodbye and the Irish duck out in sobriety because I can be around alcohol. I don't have a problem with it. However, about two hours into it, I can feel the shift. People aren't present, you know, and I'm not judging anyone, but I just don't want to entertain that, you know, I'd much rather have these deep, meaningful, present filled conversations with people and alcohol robbed me of that. So like I said, I'm not judging anyone that decides to have alcohol. However, like I am all about the real, real in conversation and I know the beauty that happens in that and you know, so I'm okay. When I'm done, I'm done. I sleep really good and I get, I wake up feeling great. Sobriety gave me presence back, right? Now when I sit with my kids, my clients, my friends, my partner, I'm a hundred percent right. Even if you know, those of you that do have alcohol or do choose to have alcohol in your life, you know, even if you're not, it's not in your bloodstream currently weighs on you in ways that don't serve you. Your energy kind of pokes the bear a little bit. So I love that I'm never checked out. I'm never half in. I'm all in. In any conversation I choose to have, whether it's with my. My family, my friends, my partner, or out in the world, I am fully engaged, fully present. And people feel that. And that's why I have the credibility and trust that I do. Yeah, it's great. And that's real connection. And honestly, that's the opposite of addiction. Number 10, boundaries build bridges, not walls. Right. I know many of you may hold a boundary, but you usually do it when you're at your breaking point. And then it's like a big cutting everything and everyone off very abruptly, very disruptively. And okay, I understand how that happens. If we start laying down boundaries not from the place of resentment or complete total frustration or overwhelm, these actually can build bridges instead of these disconnections. Right now, some people won't like the boundaries, and that may may happen. But sobriety gave me permission to say no, say no to a lot of things. And what I learned from that is every no to became a yes to the calling that's on my life and my mission and the. The motherhood that only have in my own home. But the motherhood that is spread throughout my work. And that only came because of the boundaries that I set. The no's that I say I can say them with compassion. Again, not everybody likes it. I've had people hard exit my life because of these very loving, healthy boundaries. Right. But it doesn't always feel good to other people. Especially if you have conditioned people in your life that you're that person. Right. So boundaries can build really strong bridges. And they have built every bridge to every health health, every healthy relationship opportunity. The way that I parent. It's beautiful and it builds confidence in others. Believe it or not, number 11, the body keeps the score and the wisdom. 13 years of sobriety taught me to listen to my body, not abandon it. This one, this one hits because as a little girl, my nervous system became dysregulated at about three years old. It's about when I remember and, you know, the armor came up and the ignoring. It's almost like I was mom arming my whole body and my whole nervous system. Like I got this. And that's where that 8 bravado came into play. That power that like flexing all the time. And anytime I would feel, you know, that restless, irritable discontent, the Flex would come out to play. And there were many, many times in the 40 years leading up to the day that I decided to become a sober woman that I had ignored all the things my body had been telling me. And so I have a new relationship with this body. It took another few years to really get understand the assignment. But like the jitters, the gut punches, the calm after the hard truce, all of it is information, right? The body never lives, lies, and the body keeps the score. But so many of us are operating from a nervous system that had to deal with a lot of hard things, right? Sobriety will allow you to really be in tune with your body. And the body is the ultimate compass. Before your conscious mind can wrap its brain around anything, the body is telling you something. But if you are distracted or numbed out or hungover or an emotional, hangovers are true, very true, too. You can't honor the wisdom that your body has given you. So, like, I'm the healthiest and strongest I've ever been in my entire Life, at almost 54. Number 12. Legacy isn't what you build. It's who you become. Your kids, your clients, your teams, they don't care what you bought. They remember how you led. Right. And the integrity in which you do it. Sobriety sharpened my character. Yeah. It holds me to that integrity and that standard of living in all that I do. I know that I am not the most liked person in the world. There are many, many, many, many people out there that don't like me, and that's okay. However, and my character, my integrity, the respect that I have, everything came because I got sober, because I. That is the. That is the highest value in my life. But when we operate in integrity and hold true to our truth, it. I mean, the events of the last few weeks with the assassination of Charlie Kirk, I mean, regardless of what you think politically like, that is somebody who stood in his truth, right? I stand in my truth. And every single day. And it isn't always loved, right. But it is respected. And I will take that over and over and over. And in fact, that is the legacy I do leave behind. That is the lineage. This is how I broke generational. This is how I own my edge, right? Finally, number 13, freedom is the sharpest edge you will ever carry. The thing I was most afraid to lose turned out to be the thing I gained the most. Sobriety didn't give me, just give me my life back. It gave me the freedom to write a new one, to change every thing that I'd ever been taught Told or modeled. And I gained a lot of good from what I was taught, told and modeled too, don't get me wrong, amazing things. However, in order to blaze a new trail and to light that up so many of you could follow down it, I had to be able, I had to be willing to stand in my truth to honor the integrity to stay sober and walk. My talk honestly is the greatest blessing I've ever been given honestly. And you know, speaking of freedom, you know, it was 13 years ago, I made a lot of hard decisions. I walked away from a very, very good career that I was very, very good at, but I didn't love and started a new one. And sobriety has led me to, you know, many beautiful opportunities in my coaching practice and you know, the trust that I am gifted with, many beautiful teams, companies and individuals and families and I, I've spoken of the last 18 months being another spiritual sabbatical. The last 18 months have been some of the hardest in my sobriety because it took a full surrender to honor the divine messaging that I was getting and to be still and know that when the time is right, you will be called. And you know, 13 years ago, sobriety taught me that life isn't meant to be meant to be white knuckled, it's meant to be lived. Even though the last 18 months there were moments that felt like I was white KN knuckling like, come on God, like let me know. But I've said yes to some brand new things and I'll be sharing more about that because freedom isn't just emotional, although I love that there's financial freedom, there's geographical freedom, lifestyle freedom, and sobriety gave me the clarity and the courage to step into opportunities like this, knowing full well that my discernment was on point and to say yes, not out of desperation to things, but out of this alignment, integrity and a full yes of knowing. And you know, I'm not here to help you take the edge off. I'll be talking more about what's to come. For me and many of you, this is, this is like a full circle moment 13 years later. And I'm really excited to share more about that with you, but today is all about really blazing that trail for you. If, if you are somebody who has struggled with a substance of people, places or things, you know, all of it counts. Just know that I'm here for you and I'd be, be honored to walk that journey with if it's something that you want to choose to do. And I've helped many Many, many, many people do it. Hundreds, you know, and those are the stories I don't always share publicly because, you know, it is. It is a very personal one for everyone, and it's not my job to share it, but there's been lots of them. There are some of the most special moments over the last 13 years of sobriety is the. The promise that was spoken very clearly to me day one in rehab. It was the one that brought me to tears and brought me to my knees. And I saw exact was about to do in my life, Thy will be done. There's the promises in recovery. And there it's the most beautiful part. If you are somebody that you could Google this too, whether or not alcohol is your thing, Google the promises of AA. It's on page 83 and 84 of the Big book of Alcoholics Anonymous. And there's so many beautiful promises. And I remember on day one in rehab, I thought, how is any of that possible for a girl like me? And the one that got me so deeply and I knew exactly what God was about to do in my life was no matter how far down the scale you have gone, you will see how your experience can benefit others. And that is what I've done over the last 13 years. That is what I am about to do in a huge way all over again. I am reminded every day that I'm not cured. Regardless of what you think about addiction, you know, it's a spiritual disease. Quite honestly, any kind of addiction is a spiritual problem. And working on our spiritual fitness is really, really important. And what I know know to be true is this, that we all just have a daily reprieve that is contingent on the maintenance of that spiritual condition. And I am committed every single day to work on my spiritual fitness so that I can lead myself, lead my family, lead my love, lead my friends, lead you. And I know that you are here for greater impact and to whom much is given, much is required. So 13 years of sobriety has taught me this. You know, you don't get a legendary life by default fault. You really, really don't. You get it by design, by discipline, by deciding again and again that you will not settle for less than who the you are meant to be. And that is my mission here today, on this podcast here, every single day that I am gifted in this life. Whether your vice is alcohol, overworking, people, pleasing, fear itself, codependency, sex, love, rock and roll, whatever. The question is still the same. What edge are you willing to reclaim today? That's how more people will be exposed to the beautiful, beautiful lessons that all this hard work and commitment to a very strong, integrity filled sober life have given me this gift. And you know, like I said, one of the things that really pissed me off when I heard the 2% statistic is that we don't hear enough of these stories. And if anything, I want my experience, strength and hope to bless somebody else that maybe, maybe needed to hear that today. I would have died for a me back, you know, 27 years ago when I really started to dive deep. And I want that for, you know, the person that is still suffering out there. We don't have to do this alone. And I'd be honored to be that voice to offer some hope. As always, I'm super grateful for you. Thank you for listening. Now let's go own our edge. See you soon.
