In this motivational monologue, the speaker reflects on the U.S. men's national soccer team's dramatic victory over Mexico in the Nations League final held in Denver. He recounts the match timeline—an early conceded goal (later reversed), a world‑class goalkeeper injury, a cold backup goalkeeper, back‑and‑forth scoring, a stoppage due to racial chants, extra‑time penalties, and a last‑minute saved penalty that secured a 3‑2 win. Using the game as a masterclass in handling adversity, he draws a vivid metaphor of "flying beer"—unexpected obstacles that can be dodged if anticipated. He highlights lessons about mindset, preparation, and confronting challenges head‑on, noting that these principles have been reinforced over the past year and will be vital as the team moves into World Cup qualifying. The talk ends with a call to "avoid the flying beer" in everyday life, encouraging listeners to recognize, face, and navigate obstacles proactively.

Hey everyone, here is your Moment of Yes for Monday, June 7th. Didn't get it out quite as early as I would have liked, but in Salt Lake City, Utah, we didn't arrive until like 3:30 this morning. And last night, oh, what a night. So last night was a dozen Moment of Yeses in one 2-hour span. We played in the final of the Nations League tournament against Mexico in Denver. It was like a home game for Mexico. And going into the final against a rival that usually kind of dominates us in tournament games with the youngest team that we've ever put on the field against them, it was a masterclass in dealing with adversity. We gave up a goal in the first minute of the game to go down 1-0. We thought we went down 2-0, but the goal was reversed. We then scored to make it 1-1. We go into the second half, our world-class goalkeeper gets injured. We have to bring in our backup goalkeeper cold. They score and go up 2-1. We score a few minutes later to make it 2-2. And then the game is stopped because of racial chants being made. The game goes into extra time, which is a 30-minute mandatory extra time. We score on a penalty kick, and then with really essentially a minute or 2 left, they're given a penalty kick on a questionable call, and our goalkeeper stops it. And then we win the game 3-2. Nations League champions and bad officiating, inconsistent officiating, hostile environment, momentum back and forth, mistakes that were made. All of this is, is what we actually prepare for. It's the mindset. It's how we respond. And yes, even beer being thrown on us, the players, the staff. And I even made Fox News. With a picture of a beer cup flying over my head. And you know what? One of the lessons is it's a lot easier to dodge the flying objects if you know that they're coming, if you're actually facing them instead of turning away from them. And so, so many good lessons from last night outside of being just an amazing event to be a part of, up close and personal. And to be able to see the players respond in a way with the principles and with the ideas that we've been talking about consistently, really over the last year, year and a half. And really, this is just the beginning, we hope, as we move into World Cup qualifying. But it was just a great way to see all the ideas that we talk about from the Moment of Yes displayed in one 2-hour master course of soccer. And obviously, we are doing this in our own lives each and every day in many different ways. So my lesson to you today is avoid the flying beer. Right? Know that it's out there. Face it. Don't turn away from it. Take it head on. Duck and move. Have a great day, everybody.
