A Moment of YES: May 19th

David Blaine's bee-beard stunt teaches that the goal isn't avoiding stings but avoiding your reaction to them, because reacting invites more pain. Apply that to your week: manage your response to inevitable annoyances instead of trying to prevent them.
Chapters
Good morning, everyone. Here is your Moment of Yes for Monday, May 19th. We have a college graduate in the house now. Whoa. Yeah, kind of everything kind of coming to a school year-wise coming to an end here. New beginnings, new chapters, closing chapters, all of that good stuff happening. There you go. Your Moment of Yes for today is I've been watching the David Blaine special, I guess on Disney Plus. It's a National Geographic show. What's it called? David Blaine: Do Not Attempt. It's him traveling the world and meeting different people in different countries who do extreme things. And then you're sort of seeing in real time David sort of learning, trying to learn the skill of what they do, from kissing the head of king cobras to jumping off of a bridge on fire. You know, your run-of-the-mill. Skills that you learn, you know, like on, um, um, a language app. Just trying to think of the language app. Um, so, uh, the cool thing, not only is it beautifully filmed, but the cool thing about it is every episode is sort of a lesson in mindset, um, and how to calm yourself and how to embrace the situation, how to, um, manage your emotions. And so it's just really, really fascinating to watch. And so he was in Brazil. He did the thing where you allow yourself to be covered in bees. You put the queen bee in a necklace around your— and so all the bees swarm you and you get the bee beard and you're completely covered in bees. And the fascinating thing that the expert said to him when teaching him, he's like, you're going to get stung. He's like, you're going to get stung. What you can't do is react to the sting. And so if you react to the sting and have a reaction, and then you're just going to get stung probably hundreds if not thousands of more, and, you know, would probably die. And, uh, but just that idea of going into the experience, it's not the goal is to not get stung. No, you're going to get stung. The goal is do not react to getting stung. And so I think most of the moments of yes, and as we think about mindset and how we respond to adversity and to stimulus and the things that bother us, it's like we can't avoid the thing that's going to bother us. What we want to manage is how we respond to it, not reacting in an aggressive way or not reacting in a way that actually causes more pain or causes more— Stress. So, as we move into the week and as Mako clangs the bowl behind me because he wants more food, let's not try to avoid annoying things happening. Let's see if we can manage that we don't react to them. There you have it. That's your moment of yes for today. Have an awesome week, everyone. Bye.
